HOLY CARP!!!
casting a silvery glow on one of my opponents' minions hurriedly wedging folded up flyers for her, into the little gap between the mailboxes and their flags, all up & down my street as we speak.

Actually, I think it's funny, and desperate. I considered just walking up & down the street, taking them off. But then I figured my neighbors know I've personally gone to their doors in the daylight, talking to them, and she has someone gunk up their mailboxes with garbage in the middle of the night. I think they'll see the difference.

I only wish tomorrow morning was trash day; that way, when people went out & got the thing int he morning, they could just toss it into the trash can sitting right there on the curb.

The tide's a coming in - bringing in the inevitable flotsam and jetsam. We'll need more than a garbage day to clean it up. Vote more carefully next time.

Oh, I can't help myself. Here's a letter to the editor, sent in by a long-time friend of the opponent. He also posted it to a Township newsgroup yesterday, and is the actual flyer being wedged into the mailboxes tonight:

Re-elect your incumbent Jefferson Township Trustee _________ who is
the Township's first woman Trustee.

______ is a rock solid professional so highly thought of that she is
the only Township Trustee in the nation to serve on the HOMELAND
SECURITY ADVISORY COUNCIL.

Due to ____'s active role in the establishment of open space and
preservation of environmentally sensitive land _____ has been
endorsed by the Ohio League of Conservation Voters.

____ is completing 8 years as your Township Trustee having been
elected to 2 terms. Previously, she served the appointed position
of Jefferson Township Zoning and Development Director for 10 years.

Don't be fooled by _____'s opponents who are trying to get elected
for the first time by running as a team and spending vast sums of
money on signs. They have no experience; _____ has 18 years of
experience.

_____ has been an excellent Trustee with a remarkable attendance
record despite the recent, tragic death of her husband and father of
their 3 children.

Sincerely,

(Mr. X)

I promised that I wouldn't go negative in the campaign, and while sometimes tempting, I won't here, either. But I'll just say that "Mr. X" is not exactly the most highly regarded resident around here (I actually kinda like him, but as of late, he's gotten a bit of "personality"). When the letter ran in the paper, I told my co-challenger, one of the best endorsements our campaigns could get was that Mr. X endorsed this opponent.

The next post is the response I posted to the same newsgroup yesterday morning.

Hi, my name's Dwain Lee. You probably know that I am one of the two
challengers running for Jefferson Township Trustee in this election.

I hope that you will support my campaign for Township Trustee. I
also hope you'll support R__ M____, the other challenger running in
this election, as there are two positions on the Board of Trustees
up for election this year.

R___ and I are both currently members of the Jefferson Township
Zoning Commission. I've been on the Commission for seven years and I
think R___ has been on it for two. We have both been highly involved
in adopting controlled-growth zoning policies and fighting
annexation attempts. We have both worked to write, adopt, and
implement conservation development policies to preserve as much of
our natural, scenic beauty as possible, to retain the Township's
unique character. Before R___'s time on the Zoning Commission, he was
instrumental in working for the designation of several Township
roadways as Ohio Scenic Byways.

I share R_____'s commitment to conservation issues. In fact, my
candidacy is endorsed by the Ohio League of Conservation Voters.

Additionally, for the past fifteen years, I have owned and operated
my own architectural firm, Dwain Lee Architects, Inc., currently
based here in the Township. I am an ordained elder in the
Presbyterian Church, and a member of the Session (governing body) of
the 2,100-member Worthington Presbyterian Church. I am a member of
the Board of Directors of Montana de Luz, a Columbus-based orphanage
located in Honduras, that is currently home to 24 Honduran children,
all of whom have HIV/AIDS. I organize work groups to visit the
orphanage, and I personally spend one week of each year onsite in
Honduras, providing volunteer construction labor to the facility. I
am also in the midst of a two-year educational program to become a
Certified Lay Pastor - a program designed to provide qualified part-
time pastors to small church congregations who cannot afford the
expense of full-time, ordained clergy.

I have loved the Township, and have been a strong supporter of its
interests, since my wife, two daughters, and I first designed and
built a home here here eight years ago. One of the first things that
I did as a new resident was to have my architectural firm donate
free preliminary architectural sketches to the Township, to show how
our then-proposed new fire station might look when completed. I
originally sought appointment to the Zoning Commission to help
preserve the Township and keep it someplace special, someplace
unique. And that's why I'm running for Trustee now.

The Township is growing. It has a much different makeup than it had
even eight years ago, when I first moved here. That growth has had
many good results, not the least of which is the influx of many
great new Township residents. I know that I've greatly enjoyed
meeting with many of you this past month, as has R_____, as we've gone
into the various neighborhoods telling many of you about us and our
positions on the issues.

And that's crucial. The changing face of the Township means that we
will face new, different challenges as we move into the future. R____
and I both feel that having new voices on the Board will help to
solve some of these problems - and hopefully, prevent some of them
before they become problems. We're very pleased with, and energized
by, the strong support that we've received from both longstanding
Township residents as well as relatively new residents. We promise
that if we're elected, we will bring this excitement and enthusiasm
to bear on the work of the Township.

I want people to realize that R_____ and I have both committed to
running a positive campaign. That's actually pretty easy to do in
this election, since both the two challengers and two incumbents
know each other very well, and we all respect each other. As __(Ms. Incumbent)___ told me the night of the Township Halloween Party, she was
excited at the quality of all of the people in the race, and that
she was happy that no matter what the outcome of the election, the
Township would be in good hands. Both incumbent Trustees voted in
favor of our membership on the Zoning Commission. I know that I have
been complimented by the Trustees upon my two subsequent
reappointments to the Commission, on my level of service to the
Township in that capacity. It's a rare treat for a political
campaign to be pursued without any mudslinging. I'm proud that both
R____ and I, as well as our two opponents, have all run our campaigns
this way, and we're sure that it will continue through Election Day.

___(Mr. X)___ is a local developer, who himself ran for Township Trustee in 1999. ___(Mr. X)____ - who, for the record, I also know well and consider
a friend - has raised the issue that neither R____ nor I have any
experience as a Trustee. This is true. Right now, R____ and I both
have exactly the same amount of experience at being a Township
Trustee that any person elected Trustee for the very first time has.
I'm sure that if elected, we would have some learning curve to deal
with. But on the other hand, every other Trustee in the history of
the Township has successfully navigated that learning curve. I'm
sure that R____ and I would, too.

Despite the fact that we're actually running as individuals, R_____ and
I have teamed up in our campaigning efforts, for two reasons. First,
the issues that we feel are important to the Township are virtually
identical. Second, the Township now has a record number of
households within its boundaries, so for matters of economics, we
decided to print joint flyers and have a joint mailing. This means
that we were able to cut our mailing and printing costs in half. It
also means that we can personally visit twice as many homes as we've
been campaigning and explaining our positions.

We think that this is a great example of creative thinking to save
money - and it's this same type of creativity that we hope to bring
to management of the Township as well.

It is very difficult for a candidate to get name recognition when
running against well-known incumbents. That's why both R_____ and I
responded to every media questionnaire and every telephone interview
request. It's why we've sent mailers to many Township residents, and
why we've personally walked other neighborhoods, meeting you and
distributing literature. And yes, it's also why we have signs at
various locations throughout the Township, like so many other
political candidates trying to get their names recognized. We are
very thankful to the many, many Township property owners who, as a
show of their permission and support, have our signs placed on their
property.

The Township has had many successes in the past, and it will have
more in the future. But the future will also bring new challenges.
We think that the Township is entering a crucial new phase in its
history. We think that some new voices on the Board of Trustees will
help solve these challenges, and maintain the best quality of life
for the majority of all Township residents - whether it's people who
have lived here for 40 years, or for four. We hope that you agree
with us, and that you will support Dwain Lee and R_____ M____ for
Township Trustee on Election Day.

Thank you,

Dwain Lee

Sniper rifle with night-vision scope is ideal for dealing with minions, Dwain.

Dwain, regarding your gentlemanly, rational, conciliatory post:

Karl Rove would be VERY VERY disappointed! :tsktsk:

Indeed, and being as Ohip is a red state, I wonder if your campaign wouldn't be beter served with a more "hard right" approach.

Perhaps something along the lines of "bulldoze all of the open space and build Wal-Marts" would resonate. :smokin:

(Just kidding - I like your style. Good luck!)

You sound like a liberal to me, Dwain.

Use government to stop the evil developers and to impose regulations to preserve the environment.

You'd lose in Orange County, CA.

Not so!

We only want unbridled development until we buy our own house.

Then become raging environmentalist no-growth wackos!

There is that, Steve.

I forgot what the true definition of an environmentalist is.....someone who has just built his vacation mountain cabin.
