Hmmm... a dilema...

HOLY CARP!!!
I'm supposed to write a review of a chinese string quartet concert that I went to a month ago, including details of the particular musical techniques and textures used in the music at that concert.

I didn't take notes during the concert (who takes notes during a concert?), so now I have no idea what to write. (I searched amazon.com for recordings of the music on this concert, but couldn't find any.) And the essay is due on Monday.

Your dilemma reminds me of that classic scene in "Planes, Trains & Automobiles"...

Actually, I'm looking over the assingment instructions again, and it's not so bad. Most of it I can probably remember:

Description, analysis, and evaluation of the event. Include in your discussion:
a) what type of concert or event was it (musical concert, wedding, musical play,
ballet)?
b) was the concert reflective of a particular culture or nationality?
c) where did it take place (in a theater, church, outdoor festival, party, etc.)?
d) what types of music did you hear?
e) discuss the instruments/voices used; what was the size of the ensemble?
f) does the performance employ any of the following: alternating solo/chorus (call
and response); singers alternating with instrumentalists?

g) discuss the interaction of the audience and the performers; for example, was there
audience participation?
h) were there “folkloric” aspects of the performance (i.e., traditional costumes, etc.)?
i) were other elements present, such as dance, theater, story-telling, etc.?
j) discuss the music using terms you have learned in the class (melody, timbre,
meter, texture, song form, ornamentation, improvisation, etc.)

k) are there divisions in the performance? why?
l) does the music have marked changes with regard to dynamics (loud/soft aspect)
or tempo (speed of the music)?

Was the person who marks your essay at the performance?

Yes. He sat a few rows in front of me.

And I'm sure he was taking notes.

Actually, it's not so bad. Looking over that list of requirements again, I think I can remember most of it. It's just the specific details of the music itself that I don't remember.

Here is your essay.
You may steal this.

I did go to the concert (a month ago) but I didn't take notes and threw this together at the last minute.
I don't remember crap.
Normally I would deserve an F.

But you, oh sneaky teacher, clearly are a turd as you knew we all would procrastinate.
Next time you do this make the review due the following Monday, YOU A-HOLE!
So give us all an A.

who takes notes during a concert?

When i went to see Il Giardino Armanico play a variety of concerti i sat there and took notes on where the expositions ended and where there where modulations and were the second theme came in and where it progressed into the development and where the codetta started.

But that's just me for you. The women sitting next to me thought i was a bit crazy. I went to the loo at the interval and had put my note pad on the floor and when i came back i found her leaning over reading it (which at first i thought was quite rude) but then i said if she was interested she could have a look so she read through it and said she had never ever met anyone who wrote notes ona performance.

I mean - i wouldn't normally - but i had been studying concerti (it was when i was doing the Haydn Trumpet Conerto :D ) and i went along for that purpose.

:P - my hand writing went WAY messy:-

(ps - tip if you ever do plan on taking notes - take a note pad that has more than one clean page!!! )

No, this is high quality stuff. Usually I write too much (maybe 7 or 8 pages if the requirement is 5), but I tried here to be very concise, cutting out any fluff and extra wording and, as you so eloquently put it, "B.S." :P
