Coke to phase out Vanilla Coke in U.S

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Coca-Cola Co., the world's largest soft drink maker, said on Friday it would phase out its Vanilla Coke, Vanilla Diet Coke and Diet Coke With Lemon beverages in the United States by end of this year.

Coca-Cola shares were down 1.1 percent in afternoon trading on the
New York Stock Exchange.

The announcement came a day after Coca-Cola said it would phase out Vanilla Coke and Vanilla Diet Coke in the United Kingdom early next year. The company said sales have declined.

Coca-Cola added that it plans to introduce Diet Black Cherry Vanilla Coke and Black Cherry Vanilla Coke in the United States in January 2006.

The company said Vanilla Coke, which was introduced in the United States in 2002 and Diet Vanilla Coke in 2003, could return sometime in the future. Details about whether Diet Coke With Lemon, which made its U.S. entry in 2001, would be brought back were not available.

"I don't know if we have ever taken out a flavor and brought it back to the market, but the landscape continues to change and we want to be as flexible as possible to adapt to the changing landscape," said Scott Williamson, a spokesperson for Coca-Cola.

Analysts have said that one of the keys to the company's future is to innovate new products that will help Coca-Cola capture more consumers who have moved away from sugary soft drinks to diet versions, or to healthier low-or no-calorie beverages such as water and orange juices with reduced sugar.

Both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo Inc., the No. 2 soft drink company, are battling for the allegiance of increasingly picky U.S. consumers. The United States is the largest market for the soft-drink companies.

"It is a rapidly changing beverage landscape and it is important for Coke to move quickly to deliver on what the consumer wants," said Gary Hemphill, managing director of Beverage Marketing. "The competition for shelf space is intense."

I'm pretty surprised- I know a lot of people who love this flavor. Personally, I hate the stuff

Ewww, Vanilla Coke is disgusting. I haven't seen it in England for a while. It wasn't that big of a hit over here.

Going with the modern trend of ridiculously over-specialized products, what the carp are they going to replace them with? They going to revert back to Moxie?

And the crazy thing is, it doesn't matter what new flavor they could possibly come out with- the market will eat it up, if only for a short "honeymoon" period. I sincerely believe they could introduce Diet Barf Coke this weekend and my students would all have it in their lunchboxes on Monday.

Eh, I disagree with that. Remember the total flops of "the New Coke" and "Crystal Pepsi"? They were trashed by the public in an instant.

*Real* vanilla Coke is great...the stuff in the can is horrific. They tried and failed to cop some of the market that exists for 'fountain drinks'. Good. It's our market, so we won.

Some gas stations 'round here have actual seperate syrup dispensers so you can make your own vanilla, cherry, lime or whatever fountain drink. Vanilla and ginger ale isn't too bad!

I'm gonna miss the stuff.

Vanilla Coke + Hot Pockets + [Adult Swim] = Awesomeness.

Well, I guess there's truth in that AL, because I've never even seen either of those two flavors.

But there still would be that "honeymoon" period where everyone would rush out and buy it. Doesn't mean it will sell enough to justify introducing the product, though.

Never heard of the New Coke or Crystal Pepsi? Oh yeah, New Coke is prob'ly taught about in marketing classes everywhere for a good example of how NOT to make a good product.

That "honeymoon" period you speak of isn't a guarentee; if the product is total crap to begin with, word-of-mouth will slam shut any chance for the gimick to spread.

Isn't there something new called 'zero'? I think I saw a tv ad for it; not sure if it was pepsi or coke, but I remember laughing out loud at the name. I wonder about the marketing wiz that thought that one up. Doesn't create too much excitement, does it? :silly:

My husband's stores are drive-in burger joints. We sell fountain drinks, with vanilla, cherry or chocolate, you know, the old-fashioned soda fountain thing. People are nuts for it. Coke saw the market we have in it, they are our cola vendor. Too bad their vanilla product tastes like...carp.

Yep, "Zero" is out on the shelves. But this over-specialization trend we're seeing is only gonna get worse! Best Buy is soon to come out with (or has already come out with) entire stores that are specifically designed for those that are technically savvy, those that totally aren't, and also those who are big into their home theatres.

By the way, here's some info on arguably the worst marketing flop of the 80's (albeit there were tons in that decade):

Nah, not a guarantee. I guess I'm thinking mostly in terms of kids bugging their parents to let them buy the latest processed crap that they saw advertised on tv. I hear my brother and my students lots of times talking about how gross some food/snack item is, and all the others go home begging their parents to try it. Of course, they soon realize that Barf Cola or Slime Cereal is actually as gross as it sounds, and that's the end of that.

So yeah, maybe that "honeymoon" period isn't that significant after all. . .

Oh you betcha! Vanilla coke has a good means of taking the bite out of the alcohol. So it goes good with just about any kind of alcohol you'd wanna throw into it!

Interesting article on the 'New Coke', thanks Aqua. I was surprised how short-lived it actually was, considering how much press it attracted. I guess there was so much hype before it actually hit the shelves, so it seems like it was around longer. People really did get upset over it though, it was a big issue. I wonder if current marketing classes look at bombs like this, to discuss what not to do.

Funny, i don't recall Crystal Pepsi at all.

:o gag!

Is Rye and Coke something you would drink? We (west coast Canadians) often joke about that being just a local, from the prairies, choice of beverage. You know, in between curling matches, or bingo games at the hall.

Yeah, well, me being only 23, my beverage preferences aren't all that finicky. I'd definitley consider it.
