HOLY CARP!!!
|
http://money.cnn.com/2005/11/04/news/newsm...dex.htm?cnn=yes Quote: If a collision with a deer is unavoidable, according to the company, it is best not to swerve, which could increase the risk of injury and could cause you to lose control of your car. End quote So are they saying it is safer for you and the car to just drive right into the deer? |

Absolutely, Kenny! If your car is most aligned with the deer, it spells bad news for the deer, but gives you the best chance of not getting hurt. |

I guess if the dear hits you near a headlight you are more likely to spin and hit something else. If the dear hits the center of your bumper you are likely to keep going in a straight line. What if the dear is lined up with your passenger side headlight but you are next to a cliff? Then what do yo do? |

Get away from that cliff, I s'pose. Why would a deer be hangin' out around the cliff's edge anyways, was he thinking of jumping? In that case, hitting him might be doin' him a favor. |

Yep... very true. It is best to smack the hell out of the deer with the front of the vehicle where more of the cars body can protect you. The exception is with smaller cars. Hitting a deer head-on with say a Honda Civic will generally knock the legs out from under the deer, allowing it to slide up the hood into the windshield. Most people that are killed by hitting deer with their car are killed when the deer comes thru the windshield. It was last December when I hit a deer in my hybrid. Luckily, it hit the front quarter of the car on the drivers side and didn't slide up the hood. I had deer slobber all over the windshield and a pound of deer fur in the broken headlight. It was spooky to say the least. |

Slightly off topic, but I feel the urge to share this. . . At the park where I run, there are deer everywhere, and you can sometimes get pretty close to them. Yesterday, I apparantly caught a few grazers off guard. I didn't see them because they were off to the side of the path, but as I was running along, all of a sudden two fairly large deer ran right across my path. I literally came within inches of a personal collision with a deer. Talk about massive damage |

I can't begin to count the near misses I have had the last 30 odd years with deer, moose and even bears. |

My daughter's basketball coach has scored two deer in the last three months. Kansas rural roads after dark. The last one totaled his car, but he was fine. The airbags burned his arm though...didn't know that could happen. This time of year, the highways here are very bloody. |

I"m curious. Was it the steering wheel or side airbag or a window curtain airbag.? My car has a side airbag and the owner's manual says to never rest your arm on the armrest. |

Only temporarily. You wouldn't believe how much wind resistance there is on a Civic with a 150 pound deer strapped to the roof. (jk...it actually got up a minute later and ran into the woods) |

We had a deer in our back yard a couple of years ago that got into a fight with a cedar adirondak chair we'd left out.....big male, spring time, obviously looking for a fight and decided the chair looked like one of him (I guess  ). He must have rammed it hard and got his antlers stuck between the boards. I think we woke up about the time he was trying to free himself. He lifted and smashed that chair several times before he freed himself. He seemed to be ok, but the chair wasn't

Sounds like a rather abusive deer; could have been the result of his upbringing. I hope he doesn't also have a drinking problem; that could just add gas to the fire. |

Also, don't hit your brakes before you hit a deer, as the momentum causes your hood and front end to dip down, adding to the chance of the deer coming up and over. |
| The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it. | |

Yep, no animal more dangerous to hit han a deer. Cat's, on the other hand, are safe, fun, challenging, and fair game!

How many people are going to be able to overcome their automatic reflex of slamming on the brakes in the few seconds before hitting the deer? |

I think you ARE supposed to hit the brakes. Just don't swerve to avoid the deer if you don't have time to safely avoid it. |

I think that's true for hitting any animal. The only time I would swerve would be to avoid hitting a child. Animals are toast. |

I find birds especially challenging! Almost ran me down a seagull a day or two ago; had he not swerved at the last second I would have at least clipped a wing... |

AC: I should clarify, deer are the most dangerous critters, the majority of us on the board are likely to hit. Don't have many moose, bear, or wooly mammoth's in our neck of the woods compared to yours! Kenny: I should clarify as well, Yes, you want to decelerate as much as possible, but do not, I mean not(!) have your brakes engaged on impact. |
