ZOOOOOM!
Our civilized institutions have become ineffective against the doings of evil! Rise again, ye barbarian methods of old! Once again may you punish the wicked so that the good may thrive!

^_^

Hey, I'm all for it! I say that should be the answer to a lot of today's crime problems. Cut off a pinkie, but then don't hold anything against the person after they paid their debt. You cut off your pinkie, and you're square with society again.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Of course, the punishment should at least TRY to fit the crime. I say cut off the first segment of the pointer finger, as that's what's used.

I trust you all know just who is the mayor of Las Vegas. Remember the movie Casino with Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci? Great film. Well does anyone recollect the legal counsellor for the mob bosses in the movie? Well, that character is the present real life mayor of Las Vegas- Mr. Oscar Goodman. So, the way I see it, cutting off a thumb is actually pretty reasonable given the mayor's former clients' methods of retribution and governance.

He must be getting soft in his old age. No more ball-peen hammers to the knuckles for card sharps?

Nor does he have to act as defense attorney any more, for the likes of organized crime affiliates such as Meyer Lansky, Tony 'The Ant' Spilatro (the real life Joe Pesci character) and Frank 'Lefty' Rosenthal (de Niro's character).

Doesn't that seem a little harsh to anyone? Screwing up someones entire life, for one stupid mistake they make when they are young?

Couldn't they just make them clean it off or something? And maybe have them do some extra community service or something...

I don't think it would pass muster with the Bill of Rights, so I can only guess that its grandstanding. Not to worry.

I suspect you're right, and I wouldn't be in favor of it anyway.

However, back when I was painting graffitti off of a block wall nearly every other day I would have heartily endorsed the idea. It really is a cancer on the neighborhood.

there are advantages to a punishment cheaply administered without the repercussions of the downside of a prison population negatively influencing it's members. A visible scar is a huge deterrence.

Given the choice of losing a thumb vs lock up in a prison, I think most folks would rather lose a thumb.

I wonder if it were a voluntary choice that it would circumvent the Bill of Rights???? (just thinking hypothetically).

What should we do, then, with those caught urinating in public? :o
