I just did a vinyl to digital conversion using nothing but Audacity.

It is not perfect. I have found a couple of effects that just trash the waveform and the resulting sound, but it is very powerful, accurate and best of all, it's open source.

I only use Digital Performer and Bias Peak for all my audio needs. Best plugins i reckon are tRacks and PSP VintageWarmer for compression/limiting and Altiverb for reverbs.

Actually this is heresy as i preferred Wavelab to Peak.(just don't tell anyone i said that)

Thanks all, now that my *effing* power is back on, (windstorm yesterday :hair: ) I can do a bit more digging. Looks like there are a lot more programs out there than what is available locally, and a lot of very cool things to play with that I hadn't thought about before. Thanks for the suggestions.
Guess I should just jump in and get something, and not try so hard to find the one 'perfect' program. :silly:

FWIW - I just surveyed the rack at Frys and bought Photo Impact Pro - main reason was that with all the mail in rebates (which I mailed in) it cost me a total of $19.99. I've been living off a trial version of Paint Shop Pro 4 for the last 10 years. Thus far it's done everything I need it to do. I can't even remember ever adjusting brightness and contrast in a photo. let alone play with stuff like "highlight midtone shadow" or "remove moire".

Anyone have a suggestion for a good basic package for putting video clips together and burning them on a DVD?

That's one of the reasons I was looking at the Photoshop Elements 4....it's bundled with Premiere Elements 2, which has the DVD capabilities. It is available separately, about $100 CD. (I found the bundle for about $150).
I don't know if that is a particularly good deal, or if there better options out there.

(but works on pc, for us mac-less types :cool2: )

PhotoImpact Pro looks good too, although the price I found is quite a bit higher than what you ended up paying!

I have a program called ACD that has worked well for me. It was only 65 bucks which was a plus.

Audacity -- yes, I tried it, on Mac OS X and on Windows.

It works well on Windows, but too slow on my Mac. So on the Mac, I've been sticking with Felt Tip Software's "SoundStudio." (Commercial software, so have to pay some $$$ after the initial 14-day trial period -- it's good, much more polished and more elegant than Audacity, IMO.)

[EDIT: I should qualify that my Mac is a bit old, 400 MHz G4 PowerBook Titanium -- so that might explain why Audacity runs slow there. But SoundStudio runs pretty fast on the same machine. Further note: SoundStudio is a true Mac App., looks and feels like one. Audacity looks and feels like a port, which it is.]

p.s. Yes, I paid for my GraphicConverter too! Worth every penny!

Just downloaded the trial of Sound Studio 3

I love Freeverse Software.

Burning Monkey Solitare is the best.
