HOLY CARP!!!

Fastening your seat belt may trap you in the car during a fire. Eating spinach may give you food poisoning. Opening your heart to love may get you hurt. Do it all anyway. Improve your odds. |

"Any man who would make an X rated movie should be forced to take his daughter to see it". - John Wayne There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it". Henry II: I marvel at you after all these years. Still like a democratic drawbridge: going down for everybody. Eleanor: At my age there's not much traffic anymore. From The Lion in Winter. | |

No racism or insults at all....I said it sounded like a conservative talking to young black criminals...I didn't say all blacks were criminals etc. But...I am curious if you look at people that aren't able to lift themselves up and attribute it to them not possessing the cognitive abilities to make the right choices? Especially since you feel it was your thinking skills that lifted you out of your personal mess. Some people...you...give credit to their minds or luck...others give credit to God or faith. Guess it is whatever makes you feel better. |

Yes, I agree - do it all anyway. But why is it that some bad people strap themselves into the car, and thus survive an otherwise fatal accident, while some good people strap themselves into the car and are trapped during a car fire and killed? Is it luck? Or is it just coincidence? Are luck and coincidence the same thing? |

I enjoy wondering, Kenny. ![]() If I were to stop thinking about things that perplexed me - that would not be the same life for me. |

I think we all like to wonder. We just like to wonder about different things. I happen to like thinking about religion (and lots else, too, but here's an example). Apparantly you do too, Kenny, because whenever we discuss religion on this forum, you join us. Other people couldn't care less, and wouldn't bear to listen to one word about religion. I don't know if I could stand to participate in a conversation about chemical composition of the ink in one book vs. the chemical composition of the ink on a greeting card. Some people love to think about stuff like that, but I think it would bore me. Isn't that interesting.

I actually think about that quite a bit. It's so weird. Seriously, though. Do you like to think about art? When you are painting, do you wonder about how to paint a particular shadow so that it's just right? When you are playing the piano, do you like to think about the music? Do you like to think about how Beethoven interpreted his music, what kinds of emotions he put into it, and how you yourself interpret it and want to play it? Some people couldn't care less about such things. They'd say, stop wasting your life with such ephemeral artistic wondering. But to others - it's very important. How did we all get to be so different?

Interesting thread. Wacki, perhaps you are hinting at Karma...do good things and good thing will happen to you. I don't believe in Karma, and this world is a hard place. There are many beautiful things about God's creation, but God has also said that this world is a sinful place. He's right. We have free will and consequences for everything. Some people get sick, and some don't. It's not based on how much you've helped the homeless. |

ZOOOOOM!

It's very much like poker, life is. There's many rules that should be followed in order to "win", and have the best strategy, and they can be very complex, but if you take a step back and look at them all together, it comes down to two simple concepts: - maximize your profits - minimize your losses Same can be said for life. You're dealt a bad hand, and you minimize its effect on you; don't let it get you down. And when you see an opportunity, you better be prepared to stretch it as far as it'll go! Now, with poker, you play only one hand and it's anybody's game, really; no single person has any kind of advantage. It's all luck, really. But over the long term, your strategy of minimizing losses and maximizing gains comes into play, and you win in the long run; luck has less and less to do with it, the longer you play. Same can be said for life; if you get a bad beat, keep goin'. Law of averages. "Circumstances hell! I MAKE circumstances!" |
