HOLY CARP!!!
We're thinking of going to Sedona in April. We're wondering if it will be a good time to take in the Grand Canyon, too, or if it will be too cold with too much snow. Has anyone here been to the Grand Canyon in spring?

If so, any recommendations on where to stay?

Thank you in advance!

I don't know if this helps any, but the latest edition of the AAA magazine features the Grand Canyon in the colder months. There might be some good info there!

The north rim is closed during the winter. It closed this year on October 22nd, and typically remains closed until sometime in May, weather depending.

The south rim is open year-round, but they do get snow during the winter. It's unreliable, though--some years they have snow, other years they don't. But bear in mind that it is high, so even without snow it will be cold even on the South Rim. Cold as in below freezing at night, perhaps 50s or so in the daytime with the possibility of much colder and snowing.

However, snow in April, while not impossible, would be pretty rare.

The other things to remember: it's colder at the top (where the hotels, visitors center, etc.) are than at the bottom. So if you're planning on hiking down, it can be much, much warmer in the canyon than up top. If you want to hike down and camp, or stay at Phantom Ranch, you'll absolutely 100% definitely need reservations.

EDIT: if you plan on staying at one of the hotels on the South Rim, you'll also definitely want to get reservations.

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
Ditto what Nina said.

The canyon is gorgeous all year long -- the winter snows and storm clouds are particularly dramatic. I was only there once (in Jan) when the clouds fllled the canyon from the rim, so the views were diminished, but even so, the glimpses down were breathtaking.

But April should be clear and sunny!

Reservations at the El Tovar are great -- make sure you get a canyon side room.

In Sedona, L'Auberge can't be beat. Lots of great places in the Verde Valley also -- plan on a day in Jerome also!

And if you and STBXX are flying in and out of Phoenix, let's all get together for drinks!

Optimistic, wow. We're members of AAA and somehow we missed that. I'll have to look into it.

Nina and IT, thank you, for the excellent advice. We plan on going to Sedona for 4 days but spending 2 weeks in the SW. We're not sure what we want to do or where we want to go. We've been all over the US but have never spent any time in the SW. I've been to Vegas several times but that's about it.

Again, thanks.

Aside to IT: Yes, we'll probably fly into Phoenix. I'll let you know. Drinks sound good.

added edit: I'm checking out the Jerome website now. Thanks, it looks pretty good.
