HOLY CARP!!!
My chemistry teacher is amazing. He is really funny and is the best chemistry teacher i have ever and he all of us in the class to call him 'Phil' but he has this really bad habbit of making *everything* into a sexual inuendo.

Now normally, it's nothing. Just the usual sort of light hearted stuff you would expect from any guy.

But today i was actually left speechless after something he said.

We were doing about ionisation energy and the effect electron sheilding and nuclear charge have on it.

So he's standing at the front of the class and he says 'Right everyone, pretend that i'm the nucleus and i've got a huge giant magnet. You are little tiny electrons in different energy levels around me. Now Alice (a girl who sits on the back bench of the room) is an electron in the atoms outer energy level. Because i'm so full of protons, i have control over you little atoms that are close to me but as you get further and further away, my affect on you isn't as great as there is more electron sheilding. So if i wanted to, i could make all of you (points to the front row) lot dance around like crazy chickens and you would because i have such a stong effect on you. But Alice isn't as strongly affected by me so if i wanted to get her legs moving, my effect wouldn't be as strong - though that's not what you said last night was it Alice - managed to get you to crack your legs open for my huge magnet to start working on you then, didn't I.'

:o  :o

(that was slightly paraphrased because i obviously can't remember what he said word for word - but that was the general gist of it)

No OK. I know he meant it as a joke and everyone understood that but to me that really seemed like he just took it one notch too far and i was quite shocked and kinda disgusted by it. I mean - that sooo is not the sot of thing a teacher should say to a class of his students.

Is it just me being hypercritical or does anyone else think that is inappropriate behaviour?

In America, if a HS teacher said this to a student, he's get fired and possibly sued.

You are not being too sensitive (for American standards of proper behavior).

yep, were he an American schoolteacher, he'd already be sued, indicted, fired, and working at some hardware store to carry out his probation.

Totally inappropriate, by U.S. standards.

Even in the red states. :) (Those are the deeply conservative ones, MP, where political correctness is abhorred.)

For my reaction, check out Ivorythumper's avatar. That's totally inappropriate for a teacher & very unprofessional.

Absolutely inappropriate and the guy deserves a severe reprimand at least. It beggars belief that he could be so stupid as well. Report him.

MP, tell your parents and have them handle it. It really should be reported.

This has nothing to do with your teacher's comment, but don't you go to a Catholic school?

In any case, here in the US, it is without question inappropriate.

Thing is - he's been teaching 6th formers for about 25 years so you would have thought someone at some point would have said something. It's weird - he's such a normal guy and is really nice and funny and noone else in the class found it that weird but i was genuinly shocked by it.

I dunno if I'd report him necessarily. If he's such a wonderful teacher, you may want to talk to him about it (especially if this isn't the first time something like this has happened). If this is just an isolated incident, and the girl who was the brunt of the joke doesn't mind that much, maybe just tell him to tone it down a bit.

I dunno about over there, but here in the States, your teaching career can be permanently flushed down the toilet if allegations come up, regardless of whether or not they're true. One accusation is all it takes.

hmmmm...... AL is correct. His career could be ruined. But, still you shouldn't be subjected to that kind of behavior no matter how nice he is.

I'd still discuss it with your parents. And see what they have to say.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with Aqua.

MP should not speak to the teacher about this. And yes, he should be reported.

I'd talk with him first. See if he realizes that his comments are so offensive to some people. Maybe he is just joking around and thinks that, since nobody's ever mentioned anything to him about it, it's alright and others really like it. (Maybe it's a rather uncommon and inappropriate teaching strategy to try and capture students' attention and interest).

If he doesn't change at all after talking with him about it, then I'd ask him again, and say that I'd report him if he doesn't change.

If he doesn't change at all after that, then I'd report him.

In the Red States, MP, he'd just be lynched.

Sadly, IT, you miss the point.

If a woman said this about a man, then perhaps.

But when a man says this about a woman in a blue state, it's grounds for chemical castration.

I don't think talking to the prof is the right thing to do, MP. Someone who has authority over him and his sorry little magnet is the one who should be doing the talking to him, not one of his students.

Or... maybe he did Alice ...

I doubt it. But, it sounds like he definitely does want to do her.

Talk to your parents, MP. Let them handle it from here. You don't want to report him personally because they may not take a student seriously. I'm sure they'll take your parents seriously, though.

Report him. If your version of the story is accurate, he isn't just trying to be humorous and make the class enjoyable; he's clearly got issues.

MP, as you know I reside in a country which would make a US Blue state look like a Red state. Canada has everything that Blue staters wish they had and more- they, in fact, hope to emulate our system of civil liberties. Despite the partisan advice above that is unique to a polarized republic, the truly British thing to do would be to report his thoroughly unacceptable, inappropriate and unprofessional remarks to the proper authorities- principal, school board, Minister of Education, Ethics Board and even the Teacher's union or professional association. *Nice guy* or not, he should be made aware that his professional status in the community and working with minors precludes that sort of public behavior on his part.
