For the last seven years, I have played on what I like to call a piece of carp. If you saw it, you would likely use stronger language. But we've saved up some money (difficult to do for two teachers) and we're going to purchase a 5' Kawai.

I know it's small, but we don't have much money, and the 5'1" is a big jump. We're getting the five foot for $8295, including moving, tuning, bench, warranty, etc. Is this a good deal? Am I getting a good piano? I figure you folks are experts. I don't want to deal with the people at PW, so I'm asking here. At PW, I'll be flooded with a hundred or so replies that begin by all saying the same thing, then someone has a different opinion and posts it, and then the thread turns into a flamefest. :banghead:

Congratulations! The main thing is that you are upgrading to a better instrument that will give you more pleasure and be more responsive to your skills. I think that it's cool that your family is investing in a better piano -- you are blessed. Enjoy it!

HOLY CARP!!!
First, you should get Larry Fine's Piano Book and its latest Supplement. Read it cover to cover at least three times, and commit pages 24-46, 102, 124, 176-196, and that check list on pages 309-356 to memory. Then you should search the archive of the forum for every piece of info you can fine on the pianos you are considering. Be sure to play as many pianos as you can get your hands on. Make sure you get three independent technicians to examine the piano for you before your buy. And NEVER, EVER pay in full before taking delivery...

Wait, this is not PW... what was I thinking...

Just buy the darn thing and start playing already.

(Yes, I think you did fine with that piano and that price. Congratulations. :) )

Haha, I thought you were serious there for a minute, Ax!

I'm posting some pictures in a thread in the main room so everyone will know they're there. I don't know if everyone checks over here or not.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I've been either busy or watching the Astros lose for the last few days and so I haven't had much time to post here :(

I uploaded the pictures onto photobucket and picturetrail but they both want to make them really small so the files will be smaller, but then you can't see anything in the pictures.

I asked for help in a different thread, and I'm sure someone posted there. Whenever I'm able to, I'll put them up. That may not be 'til much later this week, though. It'll be better once the Astros aren't playing from 7-10ish almost every night.

That is great!. Congratulations, Ben. Getting your first Grand is a biggie. If I remember right you were playing some sort of old upright, right? Kawai makes a very nice piano.
You will be 10 years older, 10 years from now no matter what so go for it!
