By the way, I just randomly IM'd my friend in Georgia who is 23 years old and asked "if I asked you who says "aks" instead of "ask" and "wiff" instead of "with", what would you say?" He immediately said "blacks", without hesitation. Is that racist? No. It simply validates my question further. |

Did you hear that, 89th? That faint wooshing sound? That would be the point everyone has been trying to make going right over your head. |

This is too rich..... Dol: "Did you hear that, 89th? That faint wooshing sound? That would be the point everyone has been trying to make going right over your head." 89th: "Expect a PM." Dol: " I'm not sure if I can take the anticipation." And true to form, Mr. Sensitivity, Mr. deep thinker, the 2005 winner of the Awareness Award, responds with...... apparently because he actually thinks Dol really meant she is waiting for his PM with so much anticipation that she can't take it........ Now I know why no one can get through to him........ Bwahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! |

Hmmm. Maybe 89th is a silly little attention whore. But I've heard he also sends very sweet supportive PMs to people, so he must be a great guy at heart. What a fascinating soul he is, a dichotomoy the likes of which the world has almost certainly never seen. I find myself endlessly fascinated by him. Well, by him, and also by lint. Lint is my true passion. |
| As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good? | |

Did he remove his hood first? Seriously though, and as I pointed out before, if someone asked me that question, I'd say, "teenagers". Have you seen how they speak via mobile phone texts? The word "with" becomes "wit" or "wiv". "You" becomes "ya", etc. You get my drift? |

"Wif" and "Ax" aren't even Ebonics! Just poor pronunciation, used by everybody! When I was a child, I had to go through speech therapy in third grade. Why? Because during a test, I accidentally spoke to quickly and said fank you rather than thank you. It's a common speech problem alot of people have. So is inverting letters in a word. So get the thuck over it. |

I think the relevant point here is that you took lessons to correct the problem, rather than telling everyone around you that your speech was equally correct and was to be respected as an important part of your particular culture. |

Thanks for addressing the question with attacking me. Breath of fresh air! ![]() I agree, the digital age has really transformed electonic communication. They say adults are doomed if they keep writing emails such as: hey man wanna get lunch l8r? cool, gtg... ttyl |

Wiff and Ax is not poor pronunciation used by everybody! Are you kidding? Yes, people might incorrectly pronounce a word when they are young, but hopefully they are taught the correct pronunciation quickly. |

I agree, I also agree with Cosby. I also understand and agree that there is a validity in the question that is worthy of discussion. Interspersed among this thread have been some good answers to the question. What I did not care for was the way the question was asked, the way it was followed up with the "Gook" comment, and then the absolute thickheadedness when he was called to the carpet. If the question had been phrased in lots of other ways, I would have gladly read and joined into the discussion, but ti wasn't and blockhead just dug himself deeper. And 89th, axe and wif are prevalent in white kids, too. Just because you don't notice it is not an excuse, it just shows that you pay less attention to the speach habits of your own race than you do others. That is a small little danger flag. I don't believe you are a supremacist or a bigot, but you need to be a little careful. Remember something, I live in the same area as you do, your experience with african americans from "the street" is very limited in this area. Don't get me wrong, there are african americans in your community, but not street. As a matter of fact, most africans in this area are actually africans and at most have only been in the US for 1-2 generations. And as far as correcting the speech, that only took 5 minutes, I was in a hurry, thought the whole thing was pointless and spoke without thinking. I never made the same mistake again, but had to endure an entire year of classes. |
