I was going to let this go but that was not what you were saying the whole time.

Yes it was, referring to "I'm sorry if I offended anyone. I didn't mean it the way some took it, but I can see how it could be taken wrong.", that Larry said.

I apologized if you were offended. Check.

I didn't mean it the way you took it. Check.

Since I apologized for the way you took it, I obviously can see how it could have been taken wrong. Check.

Yep...it is what I've been saying this whole time.

You seem to have deleted that part of my post that contradicts what you are saying.

I'm offended by the term "cracker"!!

Just kidding ;)

Yes, indians are the REAL americans, btw! Even though I know a really bad racist term for native americans. :baby:

PS. Didn't the term "cracker" come about because white people "cracked" their whips at slaves?

89th - when you offend a friend you should try to avoid the 'limited liability' apology and go directly for the real thing.

before you ask, the 'limited liability' apology doesn't apologise for what you said, it says you're sorry that the other person was offended. the unspoken part (or, in your case, repeatedly spoken) is 'gee, can't imagine why this guy took offense'.

In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

No.. his original question is really not ok. It is racially offensive and, IMO, smug and clearly meant to be exactly that. 'Let's make fun of the n*****s and disguise it as an intellectually motivated question'.

I for one do not believe that anyone growing up in Northern Virginia is unfamiliar with the speech patterns of some African Americans. Anyone with 89th's conservative Christian orientation has obviously heard plenty about ebonics.

I suspect 89th's main problem is he was never properly socialized as a child.

"I'm sorry that I offended him" and "I'm sorry that he was offended by me" mean the exact same thing! He was offended BECAUSE of my post. And I have already apologized for that multiple times!

Let me put it to you nice and sparkling clear (avatar reference), my wife is Chinese, her family is my family and I have many friends who are from that part of the world so, while I am not Asian, I am offended by your choice of movie dialog to quote out of context. Leave it up if you want but that is my final word on the matter.

I have many, many asian friends as well. They would understand that it's a movie quote.

I wasn't insulting any asians at all, it was a movie quote.

If you don't care if it's left up, then I'll leave it up. No problem.

What's that have to do with when I apologized?!?

Strange that no one, but no one, including our British forumites, criticized Renauda for calling Yhabpo a *Wog* in the dying days of the OCR.

I've never heard of a wog before.

The thing is I am NOT sorry for my post.

Just as I'm not sorry for saying that homosexuality is sinful.

Do I apologize if some are offended by that statement? All the time!

Am I sorry for the actual thought? Never. I'm just sorry some are offended by it.

89th - another piece of advice.

When someone accuses you of being insensitive to a particular group, resist the urge to say "but some of my best friends are..."

...and that's exactly why I posted the question here. I personally couldn't understand why people would say "aks" or wiff" instead of the real words.

If I incorrectly said a word, I would expect someone to tell me and I would change. Period.

And I highly doubt that people say "aks" just because no one has ever told them the wiser.

I say that in response to those posts that suggest I don't have friends of a certain group. Gays, black, asians, democrats...all welcome in my house! :)

Agreed, as long as they don't try and play Elton John on my piano. I'm sure it would voluntarily implode if they tried anyway ;)

Wog is short for W.O.G.S. or Worker On Government Service. When the Suez canal was being built, the British Governemnt issued Arab and Indian workers tunics bearing W.O.G.S. in large letters on the back. It was a way of distinguishing which locals should be on site and which one's were loitering or trespassing on the site. Europeans of course were not required to wear the tunics. The term stuck and quickly became a derogatory racial term common throughout the British Commonwealth for anyone from the Middle East or Indian subcontinent. That's why I was a tad surprised the Brits and other Canadians didn't call foul.

Nothing. It has a lot to do with your statement, "that's what I was saying the whole time". I have never seen anyone do a buck and wing quite like you.

jon's right 89th. You need to NAME the friends. After I say something about gays I alway say, "and kenny and Bernard are my best friends." That lends credability to your statements.

And BTW: when it comes to Jews, bach-O-phile is a brother to me.

You need to be more friendly. :D
