He's done worse than that. He has insulted my wife. He didn't mean to but use of that term amounts to the same thing. I don't expect an apology and I am not even angry. I'm just trying to get him to look at the brick wall he's about to run into. However, I will not press the point. I tried to warn him and now I will just sit back and let nature take its course.

I apologize that you were insulted by the movie quote, JB. I really am.

Although I am very honest in the apology, it's in the same manner that I apologize to justme when's she's offended by my anti-gay marriage rhetoric.

I think we're on the same page in understanding that I quoted the movie out of jest, and stand by the quote as humorous, but did not post it out of any malicious intent, like I've been saying the whole time.

I didn't intend to be drunk and run down your child. It was just a humerous joke at the time I was at the bar. I stand by the fact that driving with just my knees on the steering wheel was pretty funny, and I certainly never meant to hurt anybody, so I don't think I should need to feel remorse.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

LD, what should happen then when an atheist here claims Christians are idiots for having faith?

Or when I say that homosexuality is sinful.

Or that abortion is murder.

Should all posts that offend someone require an apology?

JB, do you fast forward through any anti-asian jargon in full metal jacket? Good morning vietnam? Pearl Harbor? Apocalypse Now? I could go on and on...

So, do you fast forward? Or do you realize the context it was said, and aren't personally offended by it.

No, because I understand the context. You seem not to want to understand that your use of that quote to make a joke about something is out of context and offensive. Like I said, you'll learn. The easy way or the hard way. It doesn't matter what I think.

How did I use it out of context? I quoted it!

All I did was switch the white and asian roles. If that's offensive to you, I'm sorry you're offended. It's straight from the movie, man.

In the movie he says that there is a person of asian decent with an american inside that wants to get out.

After stainweggie's questions as to why white people behave certain ways in chinese restaurants, I just said the quote...except I said that there is a person of asian decent within each american, trying to get out. Except I used the line they said in the movie. Same context, except you're offended when it's not said via your TV.

Like I said, it matters not what I think. It will matter to you when you try that tap dance on some Asians face to face who will not be amused.

If we're watching Full Metal Jacket, and my asian friend hear's that line, I'm pretty sure he's not going to get up and storm out. He'll realize it was part of the movie. If anything, my quote is offensive to my race...claiming that an asian is inside all "white boys".

Yes, you're right, perhaps I should rethink tonight's plans of going up to some random asian guy in a bar and saying, "hey, remember this line from full metal jacket...?"

Damn, now I have nothing to do tonight!! :(

Side note: Stainweggie's portrayal of the ways black people speak is far more offensive than my movie quote.

I don't care, even if he was making fun of white people. Actually he was...but I would guess somewhere, someone's going to be offended in the CR.

[I don't know why I am doing this]

So, you are saying that you quoting (or misquoting) that line in the presence of Asian people in a social setting is the same as them hearing it while watching Full Metal Jacket. You could put that thesis to the acid test and report back on the results.

If we were sitting down in a bar, and it was with people I knew, and stainweggie made a comment the way he did and I replied with the reversed quote from full metal jacket that's actually insulting to white people and prefaced it with it's movie source, and a friend sitting with us knew an asian person...yes, that's the same thing. That's exactly what happened here! If the friend spoke up and said "hey, my wife is asian, I'm offended but not mad", I would say "Oh, well I'm sorry if you were offended by that movie quote."

...not to mention the MANY times I have seen racial terms used for blacks, jews, whites, italians, germans, gays, lesbians, asians, mexicans, iraqis. The list could go on forever. Many of these terms were used in jest, some weren't...but it's funny how a movie quote can send some people off the edge. FYI, I know JB has kept a cool head in this thread, so that wasn't directed at him.

89th, try this. Say "I'm sorry if I offended anyone. I didn't mean it the way some took it, but I can see how it could be taken wrong."

Then you shut up.

The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. I don't understand any of this. I don't understand why JB is so upset, I don't understand why 89th thought the inverted quote from the movie was funny and I don't understand everyone's overly hostile attitude to 89th. Seriously, I'm not being deliberately obtuse, I just don't understand. I don't know why people get offended by being called names unless that name is intended to offend yet I also don't know why people call each other names in order to offend. I think I'm in a good position to judge what's offensive and what isn't, as I have mixed blood myself and had what would be called racist abuse these days, at school. Nevertheless, whenever I hear people making jokes about the various nationalities that I descend from (4 of them!), I don't get offended unless it was deliberately intended to offend me, and even then I rise above it, not that JB in particular didn't of course but then he is British ;)

Let me put it to you nice and sparkling clear (avatar reference), my wife is Chinese, her family is my family and I have many friends who are from that part of the world so, while I am not Asian, I am offended by your choice of movie dialog to quote out of context. Leave it up if you want but that is my final word on the matter.

I have many, many asian friends as well. They would understand that it's a movie quote.

I wasn't insulting any asians at all, it was a movie quote.

If you don't care if it's left up, then I'll leave it up. No problem.

I was going to let this go but that was not what you were saying the whole time.

HEY! that's "Native American" don't cha know? ;)

Apparently the latest brainwave from the UK's NuLabour is to rebrand ethnic minorities so Muslims will be called Asian-British or Indian-British, etc. Supposedly the term "ethnic minority" ghettoises, err, them, err, well what the hell do I call them?

I meant to add as well, that all these labels are insulting to anyone of mixed heritage (wow I just invented a PC term!). What are they supposed to call themselves (I'm one myself)?
