How did I use it out of context? I quoted it!

You used it out of context by using it out of context. Social skills include considering your audience. You cannot say anything you want and say "I'm just not being PC".

It doesn't work that way.

I'm sorry if this has been resolved but I can't take notes on 11 pages.

Do not answer this post. I have a feeling I'm going to others. You might want to wait.

Are you going to quote some Huck Finn for us next?

Even if I did, I think we're all mature enough here to understand the context.

I think most of us are mature enough not to qute racial epithets found in literature or cinema out of context in order to get a cheap laugh (if anyone were to find it funny).

True.

I don't get it. We all have the same mouth, biological structure and speak the same language, yet I'm standing in line today and I hear this black girl say "wiff" instead of "with", and "aks" instead of "ask".

I can understand if you come from Korea and can't pronounce an "s" at the end of "dollars" or some other plural word, I understand and have seen that...but I don't understand why blacks actually say those words differently. I mean, we all have accents and variations of words, but not entirely different spellings of the word when pronounced phonetically.

This is coming from a white guy.

...also known as 'European Americans'.

Pay attention. They do not say different words differently. They are using a venacular language and different words.

It has nothing to do with "the same mouth, biological structure".

If you meant this post to be funny I would be doing you a diservice by not telling you that it is not funny.

It comes off as a racist rant.

I am not using the word lightly. I am not "being PC". I am telling you the truth.

No.. his original question is really not ok.  It is racially offensive and, IMO, smug and clearly meant to be exactly that.  'Let's make fun of the n*****s and disguise it as an intellectually motivated question'.

I for one do not believe that anyone growing up in Northern Virginia is unfamiliar with the speech patterns of some African Americans.  Anyone with 89th's conservative Christian orientation has obviously heard plenty about ebonics.

It's also called Black English Vernacular. Just so you'll know.

And yes, I think there's reason.

"I did (something wrong). I'm sorry for doing it, and that my doing it hurt you."

Has this sunk in yet? (rhetorical question).

My contention is that 89th, a well educated and spoken young man, knows perfectly well both that some African Americans speak this way and that it is no more unusual than any other slang or modification of words by a given population. To express it as some unusual phenomenon that just can't be understood seems to me to be much the same as if he had asked why that particular group likes watermelon and fried chicken.

Exactly.

this thread read to me as an attempt at a humorous insult towards a particular minority group, that he thought he could get away with.

And our response has given him everything he could have wanted.

And more. (joking again).

I read it more as a tilting at windmills thing designed to stimulate a flamboyant debate about PC "hypocrisy".

In that case it failed.

Did you hear that, 89th? That faint wooshing sound? That would be the point everyone has been trying to make going right over your head.

Pay attention. When we're done there's going to be a test.

immediate shock due to the apparent offensive thread topic was present from the start. No matter how the thread was started, a discussion on the racist nature of the thread would have been included. That's how things run around here sometimes. A few people ... addressed the actual topic, ignored the movie quote, and didn't find the topic to be racist.

:weeping:

Wrong.

You know, I listened to George Bush give a speech today in Illinois - he said "gotta" at least 6 times instead of "got to".

:) Jodi

Combining words is fine. I bet you're already familiar with that though. :)

"gotta" is slang. It is not a contraction of "got" and "to".

I was wondering at this point if you were being purposefully dense.

Hey, 89th, why don't you ask your black co-worker why?

Be sure to frame the question exactly as you did here... you know, the part about how we all have the same mouths and lips, but black people still can't pronounce words properly.

Throw in the Korean part, too.

Better not.

The assumption is that the person raising the issue is doing so to belittle someone, or to make a point indicating racial inferiority. In fact, it may well be, but it isn't necessarily the case.

If they 1. are belittling someone and 2. are indicating racial inferiority then correcting someone's English is an interesting and not competely irrelevant tangent.

Wasn't trying to interrupt, just thinking out loud whilst insinuating this thread began as a waste of time and I'm assuming stayed the course.
