I don't get it. We all have the same mouth, biological structure and speak the same language, yet I'm standing in line today and I hear this black girl say "wiff" instead of "with", and "aks" instead of "ask". ![]() I can understand if you come from Korea and can't pronounce an "s" at the end of "dollars" or some other plural word, I understand and have seen that...but I don't understand why blacks actually say those words differently. I mean, we all have accents and variations of words, but not entirely different spellings of the word when pronounced phonetically. This is coming from a white guy. ...also known as 'European Americans'. |

I can understand regional differences even, but I'm talking about someone, my age, who lives in my area, who's speaking the same language, with the same mouth, who doesn't have a speaking impediment....yet says "wiff" and "aks". Oh, and I'm not joking...I aks this question with sincerity. |

They may be in the same area as you but they exist within a distinct culture. Failure to recognize that can land you in serious trouble my friend. |

BTW, why do you Northern Virginians pronounce Norfolk as Nor****? I mean, we are speaking the same language with the same mouth. |

What's Norfolk? I only know Norfulk. ![]() Oh, and we are of different regions. I went to school 2 hours south of here, and there are some MAJOR differences, which I can understand. Oh, and I realize blacks are part of a different "culture". Why should that matter in this case? I don't think the quasi-affluent suburban black culture warrants saying "wiff" without reason. |

I think his question is ok. He best not aks it in DC, or somebody gonna break his sh*t OFF.... but it does open it up for me to aks him about some things I don't get. Like dis: 89th, why you white boys go to chinese restaurants and play air drums with the chopsticks? You know you ain't got no rhythm. Den when the waitress ain't looking why you white boys put the lid off the rice bowl on yo head, pull yo eyes back with yo hands and den grin? And why you white boys put soy sauce on yo rice, man? And why you wear yo britches down below yo ass, man? You ain't got no ass. And why you white boys spread mayonnaise all over everything you eat, man? Dese are but a few questions I have. |

Uh........ (pssst)..... Using the "G" word is bad, man. You might as well have called me a n****r. That's just what you did to every Asian member of the forum. Being serious for a moment 89th - you need to think a little more sometimes before you type. |

I see there's still no legitimate rationale for blacks saying "aks" and "wiff"? ...or is it spelled ax? Axe? Acks? "Yo, lemme aks you a question." Yeah, I think it's "aks". |

This is where you start going wrong, when you use 'if' clauses. (emphasis mine) |

No kidding! 89th, you really need to learn how to embrace people who are different than you. Who knows? If you were to get to know them you may find out that you like them. Wouldn't that be nice? You would be running the risk that they may not like you but it's worth the risk IMHO. |

Well, it's true. Nothing I've said here isn't true. Unless one would infer from my initial post that I'm saying ALL blacks talk this way, and because they do, I don't like them. Both of which aren't true. The fault lying on those making the assumption. Everything I've said here is true. |
