I am deliberating on going back to school to become a lactation consultant. I spoke with the lactation consultant at my previous pediatricians office and she said that she doesn't do well financially and that it is emotionally depleting.

I realize the emotional stress would be there because your dealing with stressed out first time parents but I think I would be able to handle that.

I wanted to see if anyone knew if it was a field that was not financially rewarding. While I want to do something I absolutely love doing (I am currently helping a mother of a preemie), I need the job pay the bills.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I think I was the one who posted the link regarding credentialling for this profession. I'm sorry, I don't know of anyone now who could help you. I can well imagine that this line of work could be quite emotionally depleting. I wonder if you could call up a local women's hospital or major obstetrics clinic and ask to speak with the lactation consultant on staff. Then you could arrange to meet and chat with her.

Just a thought.
Good Luck.

Sorry, the only lactation consultant I know, is a RN who also handles a lot of the prenatal counseling for us...

I know several lactation consultants. From what I see, they don't find the job emotionally depleting, but then it's not the only thing they do. They are all RNs and have several ventures in the health/teaching setting.

HOLY CARP!!!
At least it wouldn't suck.

Or I guess it would actually.

Or it wouldn't at first, but then it would. Right?

I mean if you were good then it would suck.

Oh, I don't know.
TomK, can you help out here?

My wife is a maternity nurse (RN). She knows several lactation consultants and has talked about doing it herself. She usually works the nursery, but often works labor and delivery or charge. Occasionally she does the RN part in the OR for C-sections. (it's a small hospital so they have to be flexible).

If you'd like to speak with her about it, send me a PM and we'll arrange contact. She's not an expert or anything, but she'll at least have some firsthand knowledge of how things work around here (Western NY).
