You've never stopped eating sugar, Kenny - you've probably just stopped eating a lot of added sugar, either in the form of refined white sugar (sucrose, from sugar cane, or sugar beet) or high fructose corn syrup. Fruits are filled with sugar. (both fructose and sucrose, depending on the fruit). Carbohydrates are just complex sugars, that are broken down by your body to the simplest sugar (glucose), which is uses. Anyway, I'm sure the organic label has to do with how the sugar is refined, and how it is grown. Nothing wrong with sugar. Everything in moderation! Jodi

Moreover, some carbohydrates are even worse for you than sugar. Potatoes, for example, have a higher glycemic index than sugar. What is the Glycemic Index? The glycemic index is a ranking of carbohydrates based on their immediate effect on blood glucose (blood sugar) levels. It compares foods gram for gram of carbohydrate. Carbohydrates that breakdown quickly during digestion have the highest glycemic indexes. The blood glucose response is fast and high. Carbohydrates that break down slowly, releasing glucose gradually into the blood stream, have low glycemic indexes. What is the Significance of Glycemic Index? • Low GI means a smaller rise in blood glucose levels after meals • Low GI diets can help people lose weight • Low GI diets can improve the body's sensitivity to insulin • High GI foods help re-fuel carbohydrate stores after exercise • Low GI can improve diabetes control • Low GI foods keep you fuller for longer • Low GI can prolong physical endurance What is Glycemic Load? • Glycemic load builds on the GI to provide a measure of total glycemic response to a food or meal • Glycemic load = GI (%) x grams of carbohydrate per serving • One unit of GL ~ glycemic effect of 1 gram glucose • You can sum the GL of all the foods in a meal, for the whole day or even longer • A typical diet has ~ 100 GL units per day (range 60 - 180) • The GI database gives both GI & GL values http://www.glycemicindex.com/ |

Kenny - sugar I can deal with! But did you know you could buy organic Mac 'N Cheese? (not that anyone I know would eat that kind of thing *cough Bux cough*) |

Learn your history, Kenny. It's all Earl Butz's fault. Aside from "loose shoes, tight pussies, and a warm place to shit," he had a huge (pn intended) influence on carbs in the US. |

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D | |

What? The selection of spices that you never use and canned lentils that you don't know what to do with weren't enough? |

lentils are delicious.. in the fall you can cook them with a little chicken stock and cubed ham for an instant-like soup.. now you could drain them and add lemonjuice, olive oil, parsley and chopped onion for a typical middle eastern cold nutritious salad. |

Tee hee. He could do that. In his defense, he does grill well (or so I've been told). And he orders in like a pro.

Quirt, I'm with you on that. Fortunately, one of the lowest GI belongs to unadulterated peanut butter. Trader Joe's has some good choices there. Apparently, one of the worst sweeteners is high fructose corn syrup. I make it a habit to avoid foods containing that as well as those containing transfats (partially hydrogenated oils). |
