BTW, if there are no runners on base, and the pitcher balks, it counts as a ball thus giving the option of a "base-on-balls via a balk". From the rule book: "With runners on base the penalty is a balk; with no runners on base, it is a ball." |

But then again, that could just count as a walk, thus not counting as an additional way to reach first without a hit. |

sure, but it is still a balk (and counted as such) even though it's effect is that of a fourth ball. Likewise, the passed ball on a third strike has the effect of a wild pitch or a dropped ball, but it is because it is a passed ball.
Call it what you want, if there was not a balk there would not have been grounds for a fourth ball. Therefore it seems balk is another way to reach first without a hit in certain circumstances. |

Yeah, the balk situation is 50/50. It's not a pitched "ball" but it IS a walk, so it really could go either way. The passed ball and catcher's drop on 3rd strike are the same however. |

dwarf (noun) and dwarf (verb) are actually two different words, as are the various forms such as dwarfed. also dwelling (verb) is a different word from dwelling (noun), and both different words from dwell. |
