BTW, if there are no runners on base, and the pitcher balks, it counts as a ball thus giving the option of a "base-on-balls via a balk".

From the rule book:
"With runners on base the penalty is a balk; with no runners on base, it is a ball."

But then again, that could just count as a walk, thus not counting as an additional way to reach first without a hit.

PENALTY:(for balk) The ball is dead, and each runner shall advance one base without liability to be put out, unless the batter reaches first on a hit, an error, a base on balls, a hit batter, or otherwise, and all other runners advance at least one base, in which case the play proceeds without reference to the balk. (from MLB)

wild pitches and passed balls are simply errors, and runners advance as in any other wild throw, eg..overthrowing first.

it has no effect on the batter other then being a "ball" in the pitching count.

sure, but it is still a balk (and counted as such) even though it's effect is that of a fourth ball. Likewise, the passed ball on a third strike has the effect of a wild pitch or a dropped ball, but it is because it is a passed ball.

Call it what you want, if there was not a balk there would not have been grounds for a fourth ball. Therefore it seems balk is another way to reach first without a hit in certain circumstances.

Yeah, the balk situation is 50/50. It's not a pitched "ball" but it IS a walk, so it really could go either way.

The passed ball and catcher's drop on 3rd strike are the same however.

"7. Only three words in standard English begin with the letters "dw" and they are all common words."

I beg to differ. I know one that is not at all common.

Yes, Mr. Lee. I agree you are not at all common. You're one of the special ones, Dwain.

1. dwarf (noun and verb)
2. dwindle (verb)
3. dwell (verb and noun (dwelling))

dwarf (noun) and dwarf (verb) are actually two different words, as are the various forms such as dwarfed.

also dwelling (verb) is a different word from dwelling (noun), and both different words from dwell.

The dogma lives loudly within me.
