HOLY CARP!!!

There are places in the world where bombs go off all the time. Nobody at the watercooler here at work has ever mentioned a bombing in Israel that I can remember. I give it, say, 5 years. We'll just get used to it. How many murders happen every day in America? Deaths in auto accidents? Nobody even mentions them. I hate to say it, and with all due respect to the victims, but this is just another horrible thing we will eventually all get used to. We can't end hate, STDs, hunger, obesity or television either. The world is just crazy. I don't think I am reacting the way the terrorists want me to react. |

Kenny isn't saying we SHOULD get used to it. He's saying it'll happen. And he's very right. If stuff like this continues, we'll get used to it. There is a bit of a difference - bombings in London that kill people very similar to us ARE going to register higher on the radar than bombings in the middle east where people are a different colour and religion. Not nice to think that way, but it is human nature. But I do think that if they continue, people will start looking at it the way Californians look at earthquakes. The little ones are just part of life for them - if we had an earthquake equal to the little "tremors" Californians don't really pay attention to, it would be major news because we don't have them here. Same idea. |

apple, I think kenny is making an important point here. The terrorists get their huge leverage from the widespread hysteria they cause -- hence the name terrorists. What I read kenny to be saying is that a cooler, more rationale assessment of the actual danger helps us respond in a more effective, less hysterical, way. |

In the almost-bombings (or whatever they were) today, Blair told the Londoners to stay calm, because succombing to terror would mean success for the terrorists. However, calmness will lead to resignation. When people go to work having gotten used to the fact that a bomb could go off on their bus that morning, or they could die today, and yet still leave their house with no more fear than if they were going to work on a normal day, then there is the resignation. I'm not sure what to suggest in place of the calmness, because as I said just now, there's no need to panic and let the terrorists win. I don't know. |

Kenny, good thread. Car bombings used to make the front page of the newspaper, but now they just happen all the time and you barely hear about it. The London bombings killed about 50. Well almost at the same time 92 people died in a suicide attack in Iraq...was barely even mentioned. Personally, I think the more we freak out and change our security every time an attack happens. We were hit on 9/11 and we spent billions fixing the airline industry. The london bombings happened and we are now discussing personal inspection before you get on the metro rail. We are always a step behind! I say we secure the things that don't intrude on our freedoms too much. Security at airports are fine because no one is rushing to work via air travel. People KNOW to come early, no big deal, and we are safer. If we start inspecting every metro rider, that's pointless, and the terrorists know this. They aren't going to attack there, they are just going to find somewhere else to attack and cause, well, terror. I also think we need to secure the border with troops. Period. Not to mention we should kick out every illegal immigrant. Sorry for that rant, but I agree with some of you here...our hysteria is what terrorists thrive on. |
