First Spain and now Canada....zeroing in on the US!! Canada Senate Approves Gay Marriage Bill By ROB GILLIES, TORONTO (July 20) - Canada's Senate late Tuesday voted to adopt landmark legislation to legalize gay marriage nationwide despite fierce opposition from Conservatives and religious leaders. The bill could be signed into law as early as Wednesday. The bill grants same-sex couples legal rights equal to those in traditional unions between a man and a woman, something already legal in a majority of Canadian provinces. The legislation drafted by Prime Minister Paul Martin's minority Liberal Party government easily passed the Senate, which essentially rubber stamps any bill already passed by the House of Commons, which passed it late last month. The bill becomes law when it is signed by Canada's Governor-General. Once that happens, Canada will become only the fourth country in the world to legalize gay marriage nationwide, after the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain. The 47-21 Senate vote came after years of court battles and debate that divided families, religious groups and even political allies. Martin, a Roman Catholic, has said that despite anyone's personal beliefs, all Canadians should be granted the same rights to marriage. Churches have expressed concern that their clergy would be compelled to perform same sex ceremonies. The legislation, however, states that the bill only covers civil unions, not religious ones, and no clergy would be forced to perform same-sex ceremonies unless they choose to do so. The Roman Catholic Church, the predominant Christian denomination in Canada, has vigorously opposed the legislation, saying that it would harm children in particular. In the United States, Massachusetts is the only state that allows gay marriages; Vermont and Connecticut have approved same-sex civil unions. Though hundreds of foreigners have come to Canada to seek civil ceremonies since gay marriages were first allowed in Ontario and British Columbia in 2003, not all countries or states recognize the unions. The U.S. government does not recognize same-sex marriage, and most states refuse to acknowledge marriage certificates from gay and lesbian couples, regardless of where they wed. |

Peggy, I think you are missing something crucial here. Could you pick a better person than 89th key to represent a position that opposes yours? |

I appreciate 89's sincerity. Really, most people drift very far from their gut feelings, and become very sly. 89 has remained true to himself. I think he sleeps well at night. |

Thanks, Frank. I think I get your meaning but I still think you're wrong. I think it's another reason he's the way he is. Anyhow, 89th knows how I feel about him. He knows I care about him very much but then he makes me want to puke when he goes on his gay rants. I wish he'd learn to keep some of his opinions to himself. And that he would realize that some of us (most especially me perhaps) are quite sensitive about the issue. 89th claims to have "best" friends who are gay. Do they make him puke? Does he call them "rainbow fags"?

Peggy, If you insist on treating these online forums as the real world, you’re setting yourself up for a lot of grief. In real life, we can surround ourselves with people we’re comfortable with. Life is tough enough without having to deal with such a wide variety of different "cultures" and "worldviews" on a daily basis. What allows this kind of world to "work" is you can turn it on and off at will. But don’t think for a moment that I need to do that. I generally like the people in TNCR. The only person here I get tired of occasionally and have to get away from periodically is myself. Reading one’s own posts in retrospect can be a pretty harsh mirror. |

The things I learn on TNCR. So would you please explain this slogan to those of us who can only think straight? Am I right in assuming that it's a sarcastic comment on the idea that gays and lesbians do recruit/seduce people into the lifestyle? |

Yeah. One of the stereotypes about gay people is that we 'recruit' people. Kinda dumb since both my parents are hetero. (BTW - I wasn't abused, my parents are about to celebrate their 39th wedding anniversary.)
