As long as we never hark back to this nonsense I don't care about flag burning, its meaningless.

What has the obituary of a neo-nazi to do with the subject of the column that started this thread?
"Any man who would make an X rated movie should be forced to take his daughter to see it". - John Wayne

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

From the column:

"From this American's perspective, the debate in Britain in the wake of the bombings - over Powell, immigration, Islam, "Britishness" and the rest - reveals the extent of this proud nation's problems, and to a certain extent, the profound decline of Britain"

Tyndall capitalised on racial tension in the north of England and was a trooper of "Britishness", and his attitudes are more widespread over here than the press would let you think, and completely counter productive, especially under the stress at the moment. The 'Neo Nazi' label is irrelevant and is the Guardian being deliberately provocative, its a very lefty rag, annoyingly so at times. He was the leader of a significant political movement.

What are we supposed to do? Throw out all Muslims?

Sorry if that dragged away from the title of the thread, but it was what the article was aimed at and I thought the death of Tyndall poignant. The Peter Hitchens bloke mentioned writes for the Daily Mail and still thinks hanging is a good idea.

Oh, and

"For years, the police here have looked the other way as citizens have slaughtered their wives and daughters in "honor killings.""

is completely false. They're treated like any other murder.

Thanks for the clarification. I get your point now. I will not be so presumptious as to weigh in on the question of the British connection or lack of to their roots. I am interested in a connection (if one exists) with this matter (or any other) of "multi-culturalism" and the recent bombings only as it might pertain to similar trends in my own country.

If multi culturalism leads to segregation, its bad. If multi culturalism leads to integration its good. Bad = bombs, Good = diversity. We have both in Britain. For segregation you need negative preconceptions on one side, for integration you need tolerance on both sides. Again, we have both in Britain.

It may take a few generations. It won't happen tomorow.

America? Its vast. More room for people to disintegrate.

Then the question becomes, "Does the melting pot theory work?".

In order for a society to be stable, should the majority of the nation's culture be homogenized?

I think the answer is "evidently not" but we'll continue to gloss over the cracks. I shudder at the thought of a 'homogenized' culture. Sounds a bit '1984'
