Justice John Roberts!; ...what say you?

I like Bush's pick.

Born in the heartland, captain of football team, worked in a steel mill to pay for college, graduated from Harvard, graduated from Harvard Law magna cum laude, clerk for Rehnquist, worked with Reagan, unanimous vote in 2003 to US Court of Appeals in DC, and people that know him call him the smartest guy they know, he keeps his opinions out of constitutional interpretation, loyal, and has been in the Supreme Court 40 times arguing certain cases...and now he's on the other side of the bench. (or soon to be)

I don't think there's any doubt in his successful confirmation by the Senate.

What do you think about this guy?

Disclaimer: I don't know his opinion yet on Roe v Wade, homosexual marriage, property rights, affirmative action, etc...but I hear he's a traditional conservative...not as much as Thomas, but a strong conservative enough. Perhaps my opinion will change, but my initial reaction is that I like this guy. Good job GWB! :)

He's not "in the mainstream". At least that is what we should expect to be endlessly told.

OK, here's a photo and you can read about him on the NYTimes if you have a subsription (which - to put in a plug - you should, because it's free and has excellent coverage of everything. Get a fake Yahoo email acount if you're worried abuot privacy).

Anyhow, anyone can talk politics. I wanted to ask an important question.

Don;t you think that looks like a toupee? :o And not a very good one?? (Grounds for disqualification I say. What a phoney! ) -_-

I Owe It All To John D'Oh
I don't know a lot about him yet. I've only read one decision that he's written (the 12 year-old arrested for eating a french fry in a Metro station). I suspect liberals will howl about his philosophy, and I doubt I'll like his philosophy either.

However, the one decision I've read so far was logical, well-reasoned, well-written, and properly decided. (The 12 year-old's mother tried to argue discrimination on the basis of age, because adults weren't subject to arrest but merely received a citation. Roberts sympathized with the stupidity of arresting a 12 year-old for eating one french fry and taking her away in handcuffs, but found no constitutional violation.)
It would be unwise to underestimate what large groups of ill-informed people acting together can achieve. -- John D'Oh, January 14, 2010.

Actually I don't think that looks like a toupee...although I guess I can see what you're saying now.

The thought never crossed my mind last night as I watched.

He's in.

No long paper trail, universally liked. Oh, there'll be some grandstanding for the cameras, but he's in.

No, he ain't wild about Roe v Wade.

And that's not a toupee.

Yeah, and Bush is a liberal. rolleyes.gif

I realize that a lot of you, you know...um, traditionalists...think their coverage is slanted. I thought of that when I made my remark - should I qualify it, on your account? Naw, I decided. I was referring to the breadth of coverage. It's like a weekly encyclopedia. Surely it can only add as a secondary and complementary news-source, 89th. Everyone should compare sources, anyhow.

(It sure looks like a toupee to me - not to mention that vibrant chestnut color! For a half century year old man?....And don;t you see Bush looking at the edge of the hairline from the side, with a dismayed expression? Can't you see him thinking, "Oh, God! Why didn;t Condi warn me?" )

Their breadth of coverage is optimal, you're right...

...but they are the epitome of liberal bias in the media.

No man with a bald spot the size of my hand would only wear a toupee in front.

Good morning Dol.

Nice to see you are up at the exact same time as Bux, and you use the "*snicker" phrase. :sombrero:

Me being up the exact same time as Bux is coincidental, 89th. He's at work, I'm at home. And we don't even live in the same country.

Yeah - I stole the *snicker thing from him. Used it very liberally around here, but now that he's posting maybe I should cut that out :P

That doesn't prove anything! Sometimes I think I'm debating someone in here who's from another planet! :P

Is that what you're trying to do? Wow.

Well, in regards to J. Roberts, the kids over at Moveon.org don't particularly care for him. They provide the following bullets as to why Roberts ought not be a Supreme Court Justice:

# Wrong on environmental protection: Roberts appears to want to limit the scope of the Endangered Species Act, and in papers he wrote while in law school he supported far-right legal theories about "takings" which would make it almost impossible for the government to enforce most environmental legislation.

# Wrong on civil rights: Roberts worked to keep Congress from defending parts of the Voting Rights Act.

# Wrong on human rights: As a appeals court judge, Roberts ruled that the Geneva Convention doesn't apply to some prisoners of war.

# Wrong on our right to religious freedom: Roberts argued that schools should be able to impose religious speech on attendees.

# Wrong on women's rights: Roberts wrote that "Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided and should be overruled." He also weighed in on behalf of Operation Rescue, a violent anti-abortion group, in a federal case.

Alas, I don't know that much about him. Going to fix that shortly.
Sister, they don't know what to do with one of me.

That's your biggest mistake right there.

Here's their letter:

Quote:

TO: (Your senators)
FROM: (Your Name and Email)
SUBJECT: Oppose John Roberts
__________

Dear Senator (Name),

(Your personal note)

That's why I'm writing you to ask that you oppose Judge John Roberts' nomination. We can't afford to have a right-wing ideologue on our nation's highest court.

Sincerely,
(Your name)
(Your address)

You can fill in any unsubstantiated attack against him and send it in.

I suspect that Moveon was just waiting for the announcement before they filled in "John Roberts'" -- sort of a universal club to bash anyone Bush might have appointed.

I am surprised that he did not go with a Hispanic or woman. But, maybe he is looking for the most qualified, and not interested in tokenism?

Gamesmanship.

He's getting another pick, and he knows it. The second will be harder than the first...best to save that black-jewish-disabled-blind-gay-woman-conservative for the really tough battle.
