The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

No, but getting off a really bad street in Brooklyn with your kneecaps, and/or gonads intact when you act like Larry does on Internet forums has nothing to do with appearance or personal strength. To think otherwise is engaging in the type of pussy-posing-as-men that FrankM was referring to. Larry know ****-all about Brooklyn, and so do you. To say otherwise just makes you and him look like ponces.

Although I'm absolutely sure that Larry can whip double his weight in wildcats or polarbears, that is not what he would be up against. He would be severely outnumbered by well armed pre-teens who are too crazy enough to be afraid of him and would shoot him just for the fun of it. Several well armed Larrys working as a team in a coordinated action would be another story entirely.

They may get my kneecaps, but the morgue would be full that night. :(

There are "bad" people the world over, no matter if it's Brooklyn, or Zwolle. It's been my experience that bad folks don't tangle unless necessary.

Now, unless you've been involved in a few major brawls, or been shot at a time or two, I'll take my word for it, and not yours.

Jolly,

I grew up there, in the Bushwick section., was shot at once, and was in several brawls involving knifes among other weapons. (only when I couldn't avoid it) I am Larry's size BTW and can handle myself pretty well. The problem isn't bad guys who won't tangle unneccessarily, its pre-teens who are too crazy to be afraid. These days these kids carry and have no moral inhibition against killing. They kill each other for the fun of it sometimes.

Bad situation.

Kind of like a friend of mine who once almost shot a guy for tucking his shirt in...when the threat level is escalated, it doesn't take much to open the ball...

Let's be fair. It doesn't really matter whether you act like Larry does on internet forums either. They might choose you, no matter how you look or act, just for the fun of it.

To be honest, in some of the bad neighborhoods that I've been in, an attitude like Larry's helps, rather than hurts. If you try to keep to yourself, you can make yourself a target. If you show a lot of bravado and act like you don't take any crap from anyone, sometimes you get left alone a little more.
It would be unwise to underestimate what large groups of ill-informed people acting together can achieve. -- John D'Oh, January 14, 2010.

Those kids're just mean. You ain't seen crazy and armed until you've been to Morgan City on Saturday night. Of course, to say armed person in Morgan City is redundant.

This picture graced the front page of the NY Daily News. It was taken in a restaurant very near(two blocks) my old block about 5 years after after I left my last apartment in Brooklyn. Note the cigar.

Phlebas,

You clearly know what I'm referring to and it's also obvious Larry and Jolly don't have a clue. These are the naive type tourists we have to fish out of the East River periodically. Larry and Jolly, my best advice to you both is stay put where you are in white bread land.

Quirt,

It isn't quite what you said. You need to show confidence and talk in a quiet but confident manner. I am well familiar with the territory. A guy like Larry is just the kind they relish.

Think what you want.

But I've been around some folks that still have the bark on...I'm sure the streets of Brooklyn can be full of bad characters, and I don't go out of my way to instigate anything.

But never, ever, think that if I feel I'm in a major threat environment I wouldn't defend myself in the most expedient manner possible.

One other thing....

I checked the FBI stats for murders/100,000 population.....NYC has 5.2 muders per 100,000 people.

New Orleans has 25.5.

Y'all be careful down here, y'hear....

Jolly,

I do not doubt you can defend yourself. But at what cost to yourself? We are talking about some very mean and vicious characters here who play by very different rules. Anyway, I know you understand.

later edit: speaking of NOLA, I remember when someone in TOCR informed me about the crime in NOLA. As if someone from an urban area wouldn't be aware about that.

We stay away from all the obvious areas there. Further, at night, we venture outside the quarter only by door-to-door (reputable) taxi. Yes NOLA is more dangerous than NYC. But so what? Do you saunter around at night around City Park?

I've done it...in an earlier, and more foolish day.

Heck, I've sauntered down Martin Luther King Boulevard in New Orleans at 3AM.

If that doesn't prove I'm crazy, nothing will....

Yikes,

I just read that Galante (pictured in my previous post) is buried in the same cemetary as my mom and grandparents! :hair:

Jolly,

NYC certainly doesn't have a monopoly on bad guys. My best friend Gus grew up on the south side, Chicago. He told the same type of story. This is not a recent thing. Look at the history of the Irish gangs about 150 years ago. It goes around and comes around.

Ok Frank.. you live in a badass neighborhood. We get it.

How come you don't get outta there? What could possibly be worth having to look over your shoulder all the time or worry about what street you walk down?
