I'd say Led Zeppelin.

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
For my money, the best "band" is the E Street.

Nobody rocks the house as they do-- or plays as tightly as they do -- or is more enjoyable to watch as them!
The dogma lives loudly within me.

IT's onto something, but in the end, it depends on what it is you're looking for in a band. As individuals, in The Beatles, you had McCartney, Harrison, Lennon. Each phenomenal in their own right, but as a group, well, let's just say the sum of the parts was greater than the whole. The same with Cream. However, the E Street Band, each very accomplished, but the whole is much greater than the sum of the parts. Man, they are tight!
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

The Beatles!? :rolleyes2:  :P

Lately, I've been listening to a lot of Pink Floyd. Maybe that's because I never listened to them much before. I think they are very good.

I also like ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) and Aerosmith. I also like The BeeGees. And what about Steely Dan? Wow.

And what about the NY Philharmonic!? (Well, if you're going to call a piece of music a "song"--as many are want to do--you might as well call the NY Philharmonic a band!)

Queen, obviously.
Death is simply a shedding of the physical body like the butterfly shedding its cocoon. It is a transition to a higher state of consciousness where you continue to perceive, to understand, to laugh, and to be able to grow.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
In the Rock n Roll Category:

American: probably Aerosmith.. at it all these years and still putting out relevant stuff. Here's a band that has kept getting better over the years. I love the Stones, but they haven't put out anything of serious note in 25 years. Saw the Black Crowes twice, first time was best rock show I ever saw.. second time was arguably the worst.

British: Gotta be the Beatles and their members. Timeless music. The original ELO (with Roy Wood) and their predecessor band the Move were great too. The later 70's commercial version was.. well.. commercial.

Honorable mention: In the category like the E Street Band (great band) is, believe it or not, John Mellencamp's band.. every bit that tight and talented .. hardest working band I ever saw (Mellencamp is also a strong contender in the American line.. started awful, just kept getting better and better and better)

I assume you mean best Rock band. There have been far better bands in Jazz and Latin Jazz over the years. (note: I played in a rock band in my youth. I also played with a Latin jazz group. No comparison in rhythmic as well as harmonic complexity and sheer excitement.)

In any case, for a rock band, I find it hard to choose between Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones.

After the Beatles, a VERY deep bow to Steely Dan.

ELO - I love the Out of the Blue album.
But their highest marks relies heavily on studio wizardry, even moreso than Beatles or The Dan.

With the Beatles, apart from the music, there was a powerful mystique.
Either you were touched by it or you reacted negatively to it.

I think the Beatles deserve their own separate category. As one who lived through their era, I will state with no reservation that they were THE band.

Steely Dan doesn't qualify, because they won't play live.

Here's one for you.... The Dregs. All of them have advanced level degrees in music. They had one goal - to introduce real music to the kids listening to hard rock. They were mostly instrumental, very few vocals. They wrote things that would start out with some of the hardest heavy metal you've ever heard, then morph into a bit of chamber music, then a quick swing through some country, back to heavy metal. Steve Morse, the lead guitarist, was voted best guitarist of the year for I forget how many years in a row - not by the fans, but by the working pro musicians. He is unreal. His view was that if he could get the kids to want to hear their heavy metal, they had to sit through the chamber music portion for a minute to get the end of the song.

Mother's finest *was* (is) one of the most incredible bands you'll ever hear live. Quite a few main acts have used them as openers only to find that MF ended up being a bigger hit with the crowd than the main act was.

But as a band, in my opinion the best band ever was Chicago, with Blood Sweat & Tears coming in a close second. Or...... Lou Rawls' band... a big band. Absolutely incredible live.

But I still have a warm spot for......

STEPPENWOLF!............

Trust me, 89th - you will probably find yourself wishing that Bux WAS a puppet. But he's flesh and blood.
