Psst, Jon, it is you who is babbling. I had thought you would have the wit to descern that. Apparently, I was mistaken.

No, I'm just having some fun.

And frankly, I'm surprised an otherwise intelligent person like yourself would be reduced to parrotting Ken Mehlman's talking points. I'm really thinking more about your comments last week than today.

I would have expected you to recognize that, as a political operative, Rove does in fact run coordinated efforts to tarnish critics in the press.

Heck, if this were 10 years ago and James Carville found himself in a similar situation, I'd be hanging low and refraining from walking to far out on any limbs, figuring he might very well be guilty.

I would venture to describe Jolly's posture on this issue much more like that I describe above.

In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

To which comments made last week are you referring? I am unaware of anything I am saying this week that is different.

I don't feel like parsing through the old Rove thread to check the exact quote, but I seem to remember you repeating the line Mehlman had out last week that had Cooper bringing up Wilson's wife to Rove.

Actually, that line came from Rove's attorney and was also contained within the memo that Matt Cooper sent to his editors. However, I would have to assume he told the truth to the Grand Jury which, if Rove testified otherwise, would land him in a lot of trouble. I am willing to concede that Rove brought it up and add a big "so what". It still does not prove intent to reveal a CIA agent.

Well if he did bring it up, then clearly he intended to bring it up. And he did mention that she worked for the Agency. So (again putting aside the legal questions), there doesn't seem to be much doubt that his purpose was to put Cooper in possession of the fact that Wilson's wife worked for the CIA.

Yes, because it was she who pushed for Joe Wilson's selection and that is why she had the stroke to pull it off. However, do you really think that Rove suspected he was the only one outside of classified circles in possession of that knowledge and that she was an under cover operative (which, as it turns out, she was not)? It really surprises me that anyone would believe that his intent was to burn an intelligence asset for political revenge and not to disabuse a reporter of a lie.

If it turns out she was not, then why is the prosecutor still chasing after this one? That's a complete out under the terms of the statute.

Besides, didn't W just tell us that he's waiting for the prosecutor, and that he doesn't have all the facts yet? I presume that one of the facts is whether she was a covert operative (within the last five years) or not.

The prosecutor may be pursuing an entirely different line of investigation. There may yet be prosecution(s) of someone but I would bet it will not be for violations of this particular statute.

Well of course there is that, but they are just so ham-handed at it. No finesse, no attempt at making the pieces fit, just the same thing over and over.

I think you could get better info at the Onion.

You can tell when someone is unable to argue the facts. They attack the source instead.

Yes, he may. Or maybe he isn't.

My point is this ... the President says he doesn't know the facts yet. You, however, are willing to say outright that Plame was not a covert agent within the last five years (unless I'm remembering wrong, that's the standard under the statute). So, even though the President says he doesn't know the facts yet, you say you do.

Two questions: am I right about the five-year lookback under the statute? And, if I am, how do you pretend to know whether she was a covert operative within the last five years?

If you read the column that started this thread you would know that it has been reported by the media. Not to the general public but in their briefs defending the two reporters. Their source for this (as the column states) was none other than Bill Gertz
