I've heard great things about Belize -- esp for snorkeling and scuba. We were considering going there for the honeymoon, but decided on Jamaica instead. You should start listening to Jerry Jeff Walker songs (he's another nice Jewish boy from NY ;)) -- maybe stay at his Casa Gonzo down there.

Had friends go over the winter and loved it. Great if you are a diver! Another friend and his wife go every other year. Missed last year due to hurricane damage. Mr. BeeLady and I were to go some years ago, BC, but fell thru as many a vacation does with us ....

We're jinxed ya see...It started with a plan to visit Bejing, China long about Summer 1989.....sigh... :(

I know of some great saltwater-flats flyfishing in Belize.

I have a good friend who takes trips there to guide people on adventures every year (he has a flyfishing pro-shop here). Unfortunately I've never been able to go. It is a marvelous place though, and probably a step above most other vacation hot-spots down south.

I spent a short time Panama City for work, but have never visited other parts of it (not that there's that much more of it or anything).

Rachel's been to Belize. She had a great time.

Belize may be easier, given that they speak english. They also may have more resort areas than Panama. Panama City is strikingly modern, but only downtown. Ouside the city (and the ride from the airport) is much more 3rd-worldy than most latin american countries. (caveat - I was there 7-8 years ago)

If you have specific quesitons, or want to chat with me or Rachel, let me know.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

We went to Costa Rica two years ago. Had a naturalist guide and took lots of eco-lodge and national park hikes, then spent a few days by a deserted beach south of Domenical. We wanted something similar. I've looked at Panama, Nicaragua, and Belize. Belize is near Tikal. so we could have some eco-lodge, some snorkle/scuba, some beach, and some Mayan ruins in a week and a half or so. That was the idea. Is it easy to drive around on your own? One friend recommended the Chin Chich lodge.

Without baby. My mother in law and brother in law live in the city, and other relatives would come and stay in our place during the time. But normally we would take a longer trip.

rachel doesn't remember where she stayed. she said it would be pretty easy to drive around, but they didn't when she went.

sounds like a fabulous plan, jeffrey.

Amanda - No need for that. :)

One of the places my friend recommended in Panama (she's a serious birder) is $1700 for 8 days, 2 people, fully escorted with pick up from airport, meals and everything included with naturalist guide and driver. It's a family run place. Here's the link: http://www.sierrallorona.com/ . I think it's $1000 for one person. Maybe a little over 2k for a family of 4. I've never been there, but it comes highly recommended.

The nearby Canopy Towers is more than twice the price, more famous, but not any better, according to someone who has been at both.

If it makes you feel any better, we regretfully are cancelling our planned trip to Maine. The baby travels well when we went to Colorado, but we had to schlep so much stuff for him that we figured we'd relax more staying locally (Fire Island, etc.)
