I Owe It All To John D'Oh
|
This debate has been rehashed several times, but here goes anyway ... Why Iraq first? Let's assume you get past the issue of whether we should, or can, be the world's policeman. Let's assume there's a moral imperative to intervene, even in another nation's sovereign affairs, if there's genocide going on. Morally, that's not such a terrible place to be, although it does tend to create problems with some of our "allies", since they may be engaged in the very same practices. But put that aside. Why Iraq first? Saddam was hardly the only megalomaniacal dictator in the world who was oppressing and killing his citizens. He wasn't even the worst. North Korea might be the worst. Even if he had WMD ... which has pretty much been disproven by now ... he wasn't the only one, or the one with the most terrifyingly deadly weapons. Again, North Korea. So, why Iraq first? Because Saddam had the temerity to try to assassinate Papa Bush, that's why. This wasn't about genocide against the Iraqi people. This wasn't about the war on terrorism. This wasn't about WMD. This was individual vengeance, pure and simple. All the rest was politically expedient excuses. Bush entered office wanting an excuse to take down Saddam, and he found one. And now, a few years later, we have the British government memos acknowledging that. |
| It would be unwise to underestimate what large groups of ill-informed people acting together can achieve. -- John D'Oh, January 14, 2010. | |
