Peggy's answer about George in another thread gave me this idea. Stuart Sutcliff was unquestionably the best looking of all. but my favorite was John Lennon, because of his obvious intelligence, wicked sense of humor and ascerbic tongue. (hated his second wife, though!) |

Hmmm....can I say anyone but Paul? Seriously though - John was obviously intelligent, George had such an influence on the later sound because of his obsession with India, and Ringo was just...well...likeable. |

I regularly get told that I look like McCartney -- mom won't admit that I'm his love child from that assignation back in Hamburg in 1960. Lennon was more intelligent, but his lyrics were always so preachy. Of course, McCartney has to make amends for "Silly Love Songs" and "Ebony and Ivory". But "Maybe I'm Amazed" redeems him in my book! |

![]() (Someone had to do it...) The lily leaf beetle, Lilioceris lilii (Scopolie), is native to Europe and North Africa. It was found in Montreal (QC), 1945, and since then has been reported throughout Ontario where lilies are grown. The lily leaf beetle is a distinctive, though minor, pest in Canada. The adult's elytra (wing covers) are shiny and bright red, contrasting the beetle's black antennae, eyes, head, legs, and underside. The beetle varies in length from about 6 to 8 mm. It has 11-segmented antennae, notched eyes, and two visible indentations on the thorax. The adult is able to produce chirping sounds by means of a wing cover and abdominal stridulatory apparatus. It may do so when picked up. http://www.uoguelph.ca/pdc/Factsheets/Inse...yLeafBeetle.htm -- Seriously, though, I like George Harrison's moustache. Can't comment on the music, though. |

I don't like the beatles. In my opinion they've dated very quickly. I mean they're OK, but nothing I'd write home about. I think the beatles fame stems not so much from their music but from who they were when they were. |

I have to agree with Bernard. Sorry, guys! And who's to argue with good old Glenn Gould? "Their's [the Beatles'] is a happy, cocky, belligerently resourceless brand of harmonic primitivism... In the Liverpudlian repertoire, the indulgent amateurishness of the musical material, though closely rivaled by the indifference of the performing style, is actually surpassed only by the ineptitude of the studio production method. (Strawberry Fields suggests a chance encounter at a mountain wedding between Claudio Monteverdi and a jug band.)" |

I agree with LD and Bernard. I prefer a Dung Beetle to a Beatle. Although some of their songs were musically interesting (say, the chord changes in Blackbird) they pretty much blew chunks. Now ask me about the Mizpah. |

My view is that groups like the Beatles should be judged by the standards of folk music, not art music. By implication, art music should be evaluated on purely musical merits according to its genre. Folk music on the other hand is about rites of passage, rebellion against tribal elders, hanging with friends, special moments shared with sweethearts, etc., etc. It's mainly something to be experienced, not analyzed. Am I supposed to seriously consider what Gould had to say about such a subject? I suggest he didn't have a clue as to what it really means to experience folk music as a vital ingredient of one's social life and development. Besides, I think his comments are really just sour grapes. I will add that I much prefered the Stones, Steppenwolf, Hendrix and several others to the Beatles. But that's besides the point. Those like myself who grew up in the time of the Beatles understand, or at least should, what their special significance was in that turbulent era. |

Thank you, Frank. The Beatles changed everything in the 1960s. They did innovative things with their music that, until that time, had never been done before -- e.g. McCartney was watching a program of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, heard the piccolo trumpet, liked the sound of the instrument, and had a piccolo trumpet solo added to 'Penny Lane.' Sgt. Pepper is a masterpiece. One of the most important events in popular music history. Consistently voted the #1 album of all time. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but the the title of the thread is "your favorite Beatle", so if you don't like them, why are you here?

I was never very impressed musically with the Beatles, but I do like some of what they created. I would pick Ringo Starr as my favorite, because he owns a McLaren F1, and, well, I suffer from a severe infatuation with that car. I guess you could say my favorite beatle is the silver VW beatle TDI, but I much prefer the Golf. |

Ringo got my vote because he never became too pretentious. Besides, he married Barbara Bach, his co-star in "Caveman" (tag line: Back when you had to beat it before you could eat it... ). Big Al |
