Hey Phlebas, I thought it would be wrong not to show you this, even though it is SELF-DEPRECATING. ![]() A while ago I was searching more dictionaries online about the word "mediums" and found that Merriam-Webster took questions regarding usage of words. So I, of course, emailed them about the usage of "mediums" and if it should only be used for psychics, etc. This is their response, that just came today: (the main points you need to read are in red) -------------------------------- Hello and thank you for your message. The plural "mediums" is not only used for psychics. It is used for other senses of "medium" as well. For example, you could talk about the painting mediums of watercolor and oil. The "medium" entry in Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition, is pasted below. A few senses have special notes about pluralization. For senses that do not have such notes but can be used in the plural, both "media" or "mediums" are used. <-------That's the main sentence that show's you're right. Main Entry: medium Function: noun Inflected Form: plural mediums or media Etymology: Latin, from neuter of medius middle — more at MID Date: 1593 1 a : something in a middle position b : a middle condition or degree : MEAN 2 : a means of effecting or conveying something: as a (1) : a substance regarded as the means of transmission of a force or effect (2) : a surrounding or enveloping substance (3) : the tenuous material (as gas and dust) in space that exists outside large agglomerations of matter (as stars) *interstellar medium* b plural usually media (1) : a channel or system of communication, information, or entertainment — compare MASS MEDIUM (2) : a publication or broadcast that carries advertising (3) : a mode of artistic expression or communication (4) : something (as a magnetic disk) on which information may be stored c : GO-BETWEEN, INTERMEDIARY d plural mediums : an individual held to be a channel of communication between the earthly world and a world of spirits e : material or technical means of artistic expression 3 a : a condition or environment in which something may function or flourish b plural media (1) : a nutrient system for the artificial cultivation of cells or organisms and especially bacteria (2) : a fluid or solid in which organic structures are placed (as for preservation or mounting) c : a liquid with which pigment is mixed by a painter I hope this is helpful. -------------------------------- I apologize, you were right. |

89th, something I really admire about you is your willingness to learn and at least consider other viewpoints whether or not you agree with them after that consideration. Big Al |

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D | |

When I read your mediums v. media argument I thought of something from my past. In university I wrote an English paper in which I used an alternate spelling of a word. According to the prof it was a perfectly constructed and written paper, with only one error, a misspelling. I received a lower grade, a 3.5 instead of a 4.0, solely because of that one single spelling 'error'. But I thought I had her. I arranged an office hour in which I brought several forms of proof: corporate and federal government documents spelling the word as I had written it. She grabbed a 98 cent paperback dictionary off of her shelf and opened it up to the word. It didn't show the alternate spelling (what a surprise). She refused to change the grade. I knew I was still right, but I learned something that day. My hope is that you will, too. (Oh, btw, I was one of only four students to receive a 4.0 from her that semester in all of her classes combined). |
