I find this statement a bit misleading, because H2S (hydrogen sulphide) is fatal at relatively low concentrations. The statement needs tweeking, and is poor wording in a press release by a regulatory authority such as the AEUB. Also what people need to be aware of is it's harmful biological effect over time at low concentrations (repeated exposures, or low concentration longer term exposure). Generally speaking, people need seek a zero tolerance towards exposure to this stuff, and no company is going to be able to guarentee this. Jamie |

This would be in my back yard & not in Crude's, Jolly. This 'discussion' has been going on for years. Fortunately for us the wind blows from the north west .... Further, I (as did many of us) grew up well accustomed to the presence of such nearby 'dangers'. This is Alberta after all. The oil and gas industry is central to our lives. We embrace all of it, as we always do. The media (and the well-known 'personalities' cited in the article) have been 'reporting' on this for quite a while now. I'm not too concerned ... |

Like Katie I would not be too concerned either. Sour wells are all over this province- in fact, in the Calgary area there are some wells that are classified as sulphur wells since the H2S concentration is in excess of 50%. The technology currently in place for drilling and completion of sour wells, while not fool proof, makes the risk minimal. Its not like the EUB has approved an amine sweetening plant on the edge the city. If that were the case I too would have some concerns- health risks to humans and livestock from H2S are associated with gas plants and H2S flaring rather than drilling. |
