Being a rail fan and an electrical engineer, I'm very curious to learn more about this incident. Does anyone know if the Swiss rail system is essentially separately powered via its own facilities or if it draws power from the national grid? Zurich being blacked out is mentioned, but the total extent is not clear in this early report.

Seems to describe a restoration of service in progress, but my French is essentially non-existent, so I may be mis-reading this notice.

It basically says: "Trains running again since 9:30 PM, most of them late though. Trying to get everything running fine again by tomorrow morning. Some trains will have to be replaced by buses in the meantime. We apologise for the inconveniences."

I, too, had the doubtful pleasure of experiencing it myself.

I was lucky though that my train stopped in a station, not outside or even in a tunnel, and quite close to my planned destination. First, I thought "Now, shouldn't we be going already?". Then the train engineer announced that due to a power failure, we'd have to wait a little and that they don't know when it'll be running again. Some fifteen minutes later, he announced that the air conditioning had just stopped working. Then they announced that they're looking for a fuel-driven engine (since that train was an important one) and that free bottled water would be given to us. Some minutes later I phoned home to have my father pick me up.

I think though, for a malfunction of that scale, they had it back up quite quickly. I mean, I'm glad I didn't have a flight to catch or something.

Thanks very much for the update. If you see any more details in the coming days, please post. This sort of thing is very interesting to me. Many of the best lessons in engineering have been taught by failures.

Well, today, all trains were running as normal (though some still one or two minutes late) as far as I could see. It seems that a short circuit in central Switzerland caused the voltage drop. As of yet, nobody knows how big the financial loss will be.

mrenaud,
You were on the trains when this happened? Were you worried that it was terrorist related?

You were on the trains when this happened? Were you worried that it was terrorist related?

Well, my first thought was "How am I going to get home?". I only briefly thought it might be sabotage of some sort, but then asked myself two questions: "Is your average terrorist happy with just having people being stuck in trains when they usually kill people?" and "Have we done anything that might make us a target?". After having answered both questions in the negative, I thought it was highly improbable that some terrorist scheme was the reason for all this.
