I think if it's a private establishment, they can set whatever rules they want. No smoking? Fine...you might gain more customers, but you might lose alot too.

No drinking? Well...that's the whole POINT of having a bar! :P

Is not the reason to ban smoking in public places a public health issue?

And can it not be debated that alcohol has as many deleterious effects as smoking?

Perhaps you think drinking should only be confined to one's private abode? I can support, that actually.

Actually, I think the resolution is a nice swing at the "nanny-state".

Jolly (and others), would you be fine with a private home-only drinking policy?

It has, but, unlike smoking, only on the one who's actually drinking.

Tell that to a DWI accident victim.

Or a mother who can't feed her children because daddy drank up the grocery money.

There are many ways in which alcohol can devastate non-users as well as users...

Jolly beat me to it...

I was going to bet that the number of second-hand drinking related deaths FAR outweights the number of second-hand smoking related deaths annually.

I'm not for this type of legislation ... but it amazes me that smoking can be illegal (pot, tobacco, whatever...) while something like alcohol is not only legal, but advertised on TV, and in print.

When will people be encouraged to make healthy decisions for themselves?

Both examples apply to smoking in the same way. Smoking while driving (or, for that matter, phoning while driving) is about as unwise as driving while drunk. Besides, cigarettes are quite a bit more expensive than your average alcoholic beverage (at least here, prices vary from country to country, I guess). But I'm not going to get drunk because the one next to me is drinking.

That said, I approve of neither one.

It's not about the substances, it's about having both your hands fully dedicated to driving safely.

There actually was an accident here some time ago because some idiot dropped his cigarette and thought that it was way more important to retrieve it than to watch the street. And then there was one who had only one hand to drive because the other hand was busy holding a slice of pizza; he lost control of his vehicle and killed one person. Anything which detracts from being in full control of your car is potentially deadly, including smoking, eating, phoning, reading the newspaper, etc. Not only alcohol. (Please don't assume that I'm condoning driving while drunk, I'm all for stricter control on alcohol.)

Having both hands dedicated to driving safely does little good when you are sh*tfaced.

I was talking about smoking. Of course I'm fully aware that having both hands available won't help when you're drunk.

But folks -- this is a ruse. She is promoting legislation that is not intended to do anything but undercut an anti-smoking ban.

Schwartz has successfully blocked efforts to institute a smoking ban in each of the past three years and recently introduced compromise legislation to encourage smoke-free bars rather than mandate the practice.

This is a deliberate mockery of the legislative process. She should be censured for wasting tax payer's money.

on the other hand... I have to agree with you about that (except that I do like my restaurants and office spaces to be smoke free).

There is something wrong with engaging in sexual acts while driving?

Well that certainly is going to make road trips seem to last forever!
