HOLY CARP!!!
|
So I saw a preview for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when I went to see Batman Begins today. I've been REALLY looking forward to this movie because I love the book and I love the original flick. The design looks brilliant. But I'm a little unsure of Johnny Depp in the role. I usually really like him. But he creeped me out in the preview. Maybe it was just Gene Wilder being SO brilliant in the role and me not being able to accept anything else. But Depp's interpretation is so different. Not sure how I feel about it. Anyone else seen the previews? Anyone looking forward to it? |

I'm looking forward to it! Johnny Depp is probably my favorite actor working today (he brings more creativity and subtle humor to his characters than any other working actor), and Tim Burton is one of my favorite directors (Big Fish is one of my favorite movies of all time). I don't see how this movie can go terribly wrong as far as I'm concerned! |

I don't know. The original was just so perfect. I can't imagine it any differently. It's just one of those movies, you know?

I would guess that Tim Burton will do his usual brilliant and dark violence to Roald Dahl's classic -- and once one is resigned to that, Johnny Depp is perfect for the role. |

That's the other thing - it didn't look dark at all. It was so bright and cheery and cartoon like (at least the preview). I was surprised! |

I know they show different trailers in different areas -- the one we saw was very dark and Burtonesque! Now we'll have to wait to see the flick! |

Before any previews were out at all...when I heard the combo of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, I figured this movie couldn't go wrong! They can utilize current technology to make the "magical" experience that much better as well. Although, it does look a little creepy and weird, but perhaps they're just lowering expectations and then the movie will blow you away? I also heard this movie follows the book A LOT more...critics say the old movie didn't follow the book very well, but either way... ...Gene Wilder's performance really can't be beat. One of the all-time-great-performances in the history of the movies, if you ask me. It stars the little boy, "peter" from Finding Neverland. A cute lil lad, and should fare well in this movie. To get to your original question dol, I don't think this will beat Willy Wonka...but it'll be hard to compare with the first film anyway since they are just going to be of different times. Kinda like comparing the old and new Star Wars...they're just different films and can't be compared really well. |

Oh, and I'm definitely looking forward to it. Although it opens on the same weekend as Wedding Crashers, July 15th. I caught the screening of that film a few weeks ago and it is BY FAR the funniest movie I've seen in a long time. Me at the screening ---> |

I saw the preview when I went to see BB today, as well. And I have Depp disquietment, too - for that role I can only see Wilder, he just played it to perfection. ....and the umpa lumpas! wearing.....blue?? It cannot be.

It's not Wilder that I'm so wild about (though he was amazing) - it's the kid, Charlie, and his grandfather. The two of them were so perfect... Well, I don't know if they were perfect. But whenever I think of that movie, I will always think of that Charlie and that Grandpa... I don't think I could take any other actors seriously. |

I agree, Sam, but this kid was great in Finding Neverland... BTW, Dol, I saw another trailer today -- a bit lighter, but still rather Burtonesque. Regardless, I look forward to seeing it. |

It's not only the actors, either. Think of the great musical scenes in the original. "I've Got a Golden Ticket" was awesome!

I saw the trailer yesterday and found myself wondering who was this woman playing Willy Wonka until they said it was Johnny Depp. The character has a sort of Michael Jackson quality that I found creepy. Maybe it comes off better in the movie. |

Yeah it's very Michael Jackson-esque...I'm just hoping as well that the movie is a surprise and is good. It would really piss me off if the movie is flat out bad...nothing like trying to remake a classic and failing. |

I think to stay true to the book, Depp's character needs to be a bit creepy. |
