HOLY CARP!!!

This is getting scary. I don't want to be the victim of identity theft. I go to a LOT of trouble to ensure that doesn't happen to me. I have limited myself to only one credit card. I burn all the junk mail I get for credit card offers, old bank statements, and anything with personal info on it. I even burn the envelopes so trash diggers can't even figure out which bank I use. I remove my car registration, insurance slip and house keys before I hand over (only) the car key at the car wash. I have used a PO box for 20 years for all my non-personal correspondence. But now even the VISA company itself is exposing me to risk. In the modern world we can't live without at lease one credit card. http://money.cnn.com/2005/06/17/news/maste...dex.htm?cnn=yes

kenny, you've covered all the bases. I don't think you need to lose a moment's sleep over this issue. And keep your card! |

If you are realy concerned about identity theft, you can get a yearly subscription to some place like myfico.com and check on it regularly. If anyone tries to mess with your identity, it will show up there early on. It's about $80/year for the full-boat deal. Various credit cards (probably your Visa card) also offer a service where they notify you any time your credit file shows activity. You might like one of these services, although they are not particularly cheap either. Alternately, you can take comfort in the fact your legal liability for someone using your card without authorization is $50, and most card companies waive it. It can be a big hassle if you happen to get scammed by a really agressive scammer, but if you don't have a lot of open credit accounts you can probably fix any problems without much grief. |

Kenny if you continue to be concerned, call up your VISA company and ask them for a new number. They should be happy to accomodate you and send you a new card. |
