When a mission traps our deadly team in Arkham Asylum, they're divided and confronted by some of Gotham City's most notorious villains. DC Universe | 32pg. | Color | $2.99 US On Sale November 10, 2010 Looks like the Batman 'Stroke is going to fight is Dick Grayson; which, honestly, does not interest me in the slightest. |

Yeah. You can tell it's Dick though. That's the costume Dick uses as Batman. Bruce has an entirely new costume. |

Ugh, i hate the new costume. Or more accurately, i'm indifferent to most of it but hate that they are using the yellow circle around the bat insignia again |

Once again, I disagree; they never should have removed the yellow oval in the first place. |

One day, Dl, we will agree on something. And when that day comes, the end of the world will start.
They never should have added it in the first plate. I like the black bat because it is the original look and it is sleeker and has better form. It's more angular and straight like an actual bat in flight. The rounded shape the bat needs to have to fit in the oval always rubbed me the wrong way. I just see no appeal for it. I'm in now way belittling your (or anyones else's) opinion, I jus t don't see what you do. So if you wouldn't mind telling me, I'd love to know why you prefer it. |

It's a distinct symbol that stands out and has a storied history; first of all being a signifier that Batman was changing and moving away from campiness. It's just a nice look; the yellow contrasts against all the grays and blacks, a shining symbol. Think of it like the Punisher, who has a white skull on his chest; it's an instant signifier of who they are and what they do. It's their brand. The black bat on gray carries little contrast. It's black on gray. It blends in too much. On DC's end, it works out great; you cannot trademark/copyright a bat, but there's the symbol with the yellow oval, hell yeah. Also, it's representative of a better time. Aside from No Mans Land, when the black bat returned, what is there noteworthy in the ten years with it since? Grant Morrisons run. That's pretty much it. It's the time when Batman got darker and darker and became a total @$$hole. It's representative of thise darker "I'm so grim and gritty" days. Oh god! It's just a black bat! He's going darker! NOTHING WILL EVER BE THE SAME AGAIN. It's almost a comforting sight, because since it left we've had a lot of crappy product, so it sort of hearkens back to a better time. Besides which, I just think it looks better. |

I can see your point for all the rest of your argument aside from this one. Adam Wests batman had the oval, as did the first two Batman films (which were pretty corny when you look back on them. I see the standard Bat as a harkening back to the original batman. When his emphasis was that of the sneaking detective who could throw down in a brawl when he needed to. Don't get me wrong, the old costume had it's flaws (I mean purple gloves with a black and gray suit?) But I think the symbol was far more effective. Yes the oval works better as a beacon, but I don't think thats Batman's job as much. That's Superman, let him be the bright symbol that everyone can point to. Bat's stays in the shadows and doesn't need the recognition. But in the end he's the mother ----in' Batman and will remain awesome no matter what he wears... as long as they don't make him blue again |

You have a point about the Adam West show. However, I meant in the comics, actually. The yellow oval came to be in '64 when Julius Schwartz took over editing the Batman line and wanted to begin moving Batman in a more serious direction. It was the point in time when a lot of the campy characters were jettisoned - Bat-Mite, Batwoman and Ace, for example, were not seen for more than a very rare cameo after that - and they started moving more back towards Batman's roots as a detective. There was still some campiness to be had, but while Batman '66 - the Adam Wast show - was going on, Batman was moving away from it. Five years later Denny O'Neil really boosted this with his famous run with Neal Adams. Long story short, the Batman comics started shifting before and during the West tv show and the yellow oval is the point where things started to change. Batman actually had the black bat throughout the entire era of campy gonna-fight-monsters-and-aliens Batman. Also, just to point this out, the original Batman wasn't exactly some uber gritty detective or anything that the comics had moved away from before. They were still pretty ridiculous and into the fantastic. See Batman taking on Hugo Stranges Monster Men - at which point he was still using machine guns - and his fights against the vampiric Mad Monk.
I didn't mean symbol as in a symbol to people. I meant symbol as it's his symbol. It's much more distinct as a symbol. To us. Stands out more.
I'm cool with blue, so long as it's not too bright when used in the comics. |
