First off, let me say that this cover look amazingly. I love the color and the shadows and all the levels being used here. Also I do think that this team could be pretty hardcore awesome. However, I still have a BIG problem with this team calling themselves the Titans. If Deathstroke was taking over leadership, fine as long as he followed the team tradition and objective. But from the looks of it, this team is just going to be a group of guns for hire and the best we can hope for is a bunch of anti-heroes. That's not the Titans. I mean if they were all villians seeking some form of redemption, or mercs who were now acting under their own sense of right, then I'd leave it alone. But it sounds as if they will just be taking the same types of merc work whilst using one of DC's staple team titles. Just doesn't seem right... |

Well, let's just wait and see. Some things that don't sound like they fit for a character or team turn out to be crazy awesome. FrankenCastle, for instance. Also, the New Teen Titans were rejected by the fanbase when they were first heard about it - because it wasn't the Fab Five and such - until the book actually hit. Who knows? It could be awesome. |

DC has been using "Titans" as merely a 'title' for decades now. If you just figured out that the franchise wasn't as important to DC as the money coming in from it was... Let's just say you didn't look hard enough. Besides the staff behind the Titans comics being like a revolving door, different writers and artists keep jumping behind the pen and the paper, so the true nature of the Titans comics is likely to get further and further from its original glory. This new series is just more proof of that. But let's face it, actual comic books are starting to fade like magazines and newspapers. But even worse, newspapers are usually mandatory, by deliver or by stands on the side of the road/at gas stations. And magazines sit there in waiting rooms nationwide to please bored people waiting for their appointment. Comic books don't have that leisure, so the Titans franchise was already in trouble. If they start going in a more off-franchise direction, it's likely to alienate what's left of the fan base. And even worse, the original Titans comic has gone from hit (in the 80's) to having the originallity of an over-played soap opera. They even had to bring back Trigon (Again.), and put in a nude scene with Starfire (with random objects covering the sensitivity areas, of course.) When any form of fiction resorts to its own old storyline(s) and fanservice (and, of course, if it's not in Japan), it's safe to say that the creativity era is done with. Though, the bright side? If the comics don't work out, DC may start selling its soul to the movie market, and with how Hollywood recycles ideas, a Teen Titans movie may be thrown out there sooner or later. Call me pessimistic, but I don't see this comic making anything better. |
You can go read something else now.

Considering the comic market has shown net growth in the past several years, I'd dispute that statement. Besides which, comics are also expanding into other venues. Armchair analysts have been saying the market was going to die since the sixties; hell, comics aren't even the only thing that recieves those sort of naysayers. The thing is that the comic market is changing; it's not just about the single issues anymore. There are online comics - which I hear the ones released so far are successful - subscriptions, trades - a venue in which DC dominates, it seems - and other forms. Why comics lost a lot of steam? The loss of being sold pretty much everywhere. The make or break is probably going to be whether we see a shift away from Diamond publishing in the future. They've held a monopoly on the industry. Monopoly's are never good. So they're not really fading. What we're really seeing right now is the loss of importance of the single issue periodicals. Used to be that the single issues you picked up on the stands WERE the business. Now, not so much. But they'll always be around; after all, they bring in quicker money that helps keep the business running smoothly while other venues now help get investments into the black.
It was a hit for years of this decade too. Just adding on to your statement. Alienation or not, it's een pretty much proven that if a good Titans book is put on the market, the fans will come back. But, well, that's the problem; we're talking about a good Titans book; which we haven't truly had since Geoff Johns left the book.
This is actually the first time Trigon's been brought back. He was in the original story of the New Teen Titans, died in Terror of Trigon and hasn't been seen up until the opening Winick storyline in which he wasn't even a real player.
For the Titans franchise? Probably not. With luck, it will be good and the naysayers will quickly fade out. If not, it'll just be another footnote in Titans history as we pass the time until someone who knows what the **** they're doing gets their hands on the franchise. |

DCU: The Source posted some preliminary artwork for this issue a couple of days ago: http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2010/04/23/ge...titans-artwork/ People are also wondering about the absence of Jericho from this line-up, since it was pretty heavily implied recently (TT #77-78) that Joey would be joining up with his dad. I will laugh like a maniac if it turns out Jericho gets killed in this one-shot. |
