I don't think I saw a thread for this hilarious duo anywhere, so I thought I'd put one up.

These two are pretty much one of the greatest comedic duos you'll ever encounter. The franchise started off as a comic book series in 1987. And there was a popular animated cartoon series in 1997, although because it was geared towards kids instead of the franchise's usual adult audiences, a lot of the violence and subject matter was toned down considerably.

However, Sam & Max are largely known in the video game industry. In the early 90's, a point-and-click adventure game was released for computers, called Sam & Max Hit the Road. It became one of the most popular adventure games of its time. Several years later, Sam & Max were brought back into the world of gaming via Telltale Games, with two brilliant episodic series of games. Recently, the first season was re-released for the Wii, and as a downloadable game for the Xbox 360, with the second season getting the same treatment soon. I've had the pleasure of playing the first season a while back, and it's awesome. Really good fun.

You know what? I think I'll just go ahead and put up a review for this first season, titled "Sam & Max Save the World".

Story: 8/10
Each episode of this season has their own self-contained stories, with the season itself having an overarching storyline that ties these stories together. It all basically involves several cases of hypnosis, and Sam and Max are called upon by the commissioner each and every time to get to the bottom of it all. The whole season ends in the sixth episode, with a very humourous final showdown with the lead villain.

You're pretty much gonna have a great time, getting to know all of the characters in the game. Going through the story, you'll find that the franchise's trademark comedy pretty much remains intact here. Interacting with various people and objects in the world of Sam & Max leads to some funny comments and dialogue that will most likely leave you howling with laughter all the way through.

Quote:

Sam: Well, if it isn't my recurring nightmare in the artificial flesh. The grinning, disembodied head of Hugh Bliss.

Max: Hugh, I just want you to know that the way you unashamedly use your personal celebrity to thrust your spiritual beliefs on others is an inspiration to us all. I love you, Hugh Bliss.

Internet Wizard: Hi. I'm not Hugh Bliss.

Max: I hate you.

Gameplay and Design: 7/10
Like a lot of point-and-click adventure games, playing the game's pretty simple. You move the cursor around, and click at a specific part of the screen to make Sam move in that direction. There are a lot of puzzles to solve and obstacles to get around, some of which you'll probably figure out the answer to right away, while others can take some extensive brain work. You're gonna want to explore some of the areas in the game, click on different objects, and talk to people to get some hints that will help you out, and clue you in on what you need to do next. Although, some of the stuff that spouts out of Max's and everyone else's mouths might not be so helpful.

I gotta say though, some of the episodes can be a bit tedious and repetitive. Like episodes four and five. You're constantly switching between places just trying to get items to solve puzzles, and it can be a bit annoying.

It's pretty much classic point-and-click gameplay at its best, similar to some of the old LucasArts games, so you're pretty much guaranteed to have a good time playing this game.

Presentation: 8/10
The game looks really good. The characters are rendered really well, and the voice-overs are pretty good too, the voices really fit the characters. Although sometimes, you might get bored of looking at some of the same facial animations over and over again. You might also experience some cases where the lip sync is off a tiny bit. Especially when you look at Max in some of the cut scenes.

The music's pretty good as well, fitting each of the areas in the game. If you're stuck in a specific area though, trying to solve a puzzle, you might get tired of the music, and so you might want to turn the music off for a while.

Overall: 8/10
Barring some minor problems, Sam & Max Save the World is a really good point-and-click game. If there's anyone who hasn't played it at all, I guarantee, you're gonna have a good time with this one. It's out now for PC computers. It's also out for the Wii, and as a downloadable XBLA title. I highly recommend this title. The series' trademark comedy alone is worth getting this game. Get it, you won't regret it. It's fun! Trust me, trust me!
