Everyone knows Warner Brothers, right? If you were ever a fan of Teen Titans, the company name should ring a bell. Just in case, they are the owners of DC Comics. They generally have overall control on other media adaptions of DC things and such. Now, you might also know that Midway Games, developers of the famed Mortal Kombat franchise, is going bankrupt. If not, there you go. They filed back at the beginning of the year and are putting themselves up for sale. This is something we've seen earlier with Free Radical, which was bought by Crytek and renamed. Well, Warner Brothers is making a bid for Midway to the tune of thirty three million: http://gamefreaks365.com/newsarticle.php?sid=3134 This makes some sense, really. WB and Midway recently collaborated on Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, a generally well recieved fighting game that made some decent money on the whole. WB has also been making moves into the video game scene for the past couple of years now as well. This move makes sense on WB's part; while nothing is concrete yet and likely won't be until the end of the month, this is probably a good indicator of how this is going to shake out. The contents WB are bidding on amounts to the main Chicago studios and some of Midway's IP's, the most notable of which being the Mortal Kombat rights. Could we be seeing MK vs DC as more than a one-off game? Perhaps the Mortal Kombat characters might be brought into comic series by DC? Perhaps with a big company like WB behind it, Midway could take risks on new games? Time will tell. I'm personally hoping this goes through. It could be for the best in the long run. The other studios under Midway's umbrella would be on their own, however. They'll probably be snatched up quick enough, however. WB is most interested in the main teams of Midway and Mortal Kombat; that seems to leave a lot of other franchises up for the taking. |

Well if they're purchasing Midway I'm kinda hoping that means the chances for a sequel to Psi-Ops will therefore eventually come out. Although I'm seriously not betting the bank on that. Glad to see Midway may survive though. |

It depends on what WB would get with those two studios. The only franchise mentioned right now as a part of the bids is Mortal Kombat. If they did get that one though, they might give it a shot. The other studios do hold onto some of the companies stuff, though. We don't have much of a franchise breakdown currently, though. I suspect we'll get more details as it gets closer to the end of the month. |

This is one of the most ludicrous lawsuits I think I've ever seen in my life: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6212579.html?...adlines;title;1 |

You've gotta be kidding me. The spin-off (and really bad spin-off at that) is suing the originals? Seriously? |

I wish I was kidding. I guarantee you that the only reason this is even happening is because Midway is going bankrupt. It's a cash-grab. This guy is obviously worried about the fact that WB is seriously looking into purchasing Midway; that means WB could make other media based on the property this same guy hasn't done anything with in years. This whole thing seems as frivolous and ridiculous as Activisions lawsuit against Double Fine to stop Brutal Legend from releasing; they want that quick buck like Fox did with the Watchmen film this year. Legally it seems rather open and shut. They don't seem to have a leg to stand on. Still, this could put an annoying dent in things. |

Midway is now safely nestled in Warner Brothers arms: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6212886.html?...adlines;title;2 The deal gives WB the rights to Mortal Kombat, along with many of Midway's major franchises. No clue what's going to happen to the straggler studio offices though. They weren't included; nor was the rights to make games based on the TNA wrestling (not that such is any big loss). I suppose WB didn't want that part. |

So Midway's now an official Warner Bros. branch of sorts, right? Do you suppose that Mortal Kombat will have a comic book series of its own? |

Pretty much. I think it's also WB's first video game dedicated subsidiary, which means they've got a decent foothold in gaming now, which they hadn't before. On some Mortal Kombat comics, that's probably a safe bet. From what I understand, while the film and animated rights are still tied up with someone else, WB holds the rights to anything else Mortal Kombat-wise. So I suspect comic books, particularly an ongoing, would probably be in the cards before too long. I doubt WB and DC would sit on that potential for too long. I don't think it would be the first time either. I think DC has done a Mortal Kombat comic or two before through their Wildstorm imprint (which has recently done projects like Freddy vs Jason vs Ash and some other horror related stuff, meaning the brutality of Mortal Kombat would be right at home there). So this would probably work out for the best. Hell, maybe the game studios might even pick up a few ideas from DC Comics stable of writers; stranger things have happened. Also, this means that Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe will probably become a long standing spin-off franchise. Midway is still doing M rated Mortal Kombats as well, but MK vs DCU was a big success the likes they hadn't seen in a while and now the company who owns DC will be funding them. All this aside, I'm just glad that Midway's found a buyer. It was kind of distressing to hear they were going under. WB purchasing the game company just seemed a natural extension considering their profitable dealings of late. |
