Anyone who has an X-Box 360, don't take it online. Seriously. Chances are it won't end well. http://forums.xbox.com/1/25603474/ShowPost.aspx#25603474 That's only the official support site for the system; even news sites have been recently picking up on this killer "patch. Microsoft quite literally released a killer patch on the third of February. It was supposed to fix an HDMI and audio issue. Seems simple right? Wrong. Since then, an unbelievable amount of people have been bricked by the RRoD within short order after a mandatory update was issued (Microsoft forces you to update or you are unallowed to touch X-Box Live). Microsoft has not responded at all, keeping to their usual money grubbing, deny all blame tactics. They keep claiming it is an isolated incident despite unparalleled reports of this. It's not isolated. This is why I didn't want an X-Box 360 originally. It's problems, both hardware and otherwise, are almost legendary and they still haven't replaced the chipsets that cause most of the issues years after the consoles release. I'm honestly, truly glad I'm not hooked up online. Some people have been hit with the RRoD on up to five consoles while being forced to pay a hundred dollars to repair it. I'm hoping to hell I never get a RRoD, but something inside me knows it's almost inevitable. Don't sign in online until this is resolved. The chance your console will be bricked is too great to risk. |

Well, son of a bitch. I was gonna go out and get a card to renew my Gold Membership, but you managed to save my butt. Any idea when this crisis will be averted? |

I honestly have no idea. It's been well over a week and a half since the update was released and nothing has been done yet. Microsoft is denying the fact that it has to do with the software, trying to say it's an isolated incident despite increasing reports. No refunds or replacements either. Their wonderful customer services solution? Send it in and pay a hundred dollars for repairs. They haven't taken the killer update offline either; not admitting liability is one thing, but keeping it up onlien regardless is just reckless. Some people are starting to report Microoft to the BBB. This is utterly ridiculous. This is the third time this has happened with a system update with the 360, though the NXE update wasn't quite as widespread. At least when Sony had a failure they were right on top of the problem and fixed it in short order. I can hardly believe three plus years after the system has released that Microsoft still hasn't replaced the chipsets so prone to breaking down. I'll let you know when I hear something. Meantime, online play isn't worth the risk. |

Noted. Guess I'm gonna have to hold back on that Phantasy Star Universe expansion for a while. Should've downloaded it sooner. |

Well, it's not like you knew it would happen; it's not your fault. Hell, no one really did. The X-Box 360 may have hardware problems that are literally the stuff of legends, but this was just a minor update to fix bugs in certain displays. By all accounts, the last thing you'd expect to blow up your system would be a fix for audio and video drivers! It's kind of sad, but this is Microsoft. They're notorious for hardware and software problems. Have been since before they even cast a glance at the console market. Hopefully something is done soon. Or Microsoft at least bothers to acknowledge the problem. |

Thats odd, my Xbox got the update but I didn't have any trouble. I went on and played it like normal, and my Xbox hooks up to LIVE automatically. My sister's boyfriend downloaded a demo from Xbox live a few nights ago and his is okay too. Maybe it only affects certain xboxes. |

It does. Jasper's usually recieve the update alright, though there's been a case or two with those. Watch out though. There have been people who only recieved some system slowdown but kept on trucking, though getting progressively worse. A week later it failed. So it isn't aways immediate. More a warning than anything else. It's definitely best not to hit up Live until some kind of good word is released.
What happened to it? Power supply issue? |

I'm doing the same. I was going to see about finding a way to hook the system up to the internet, if only to see if I could get around paying for a hundred dollar adapter to pick up Wi-Fi. Then I heard about this. The thing that scares me is that it's RRoD'd systems only a month or two old. Considering I got my system a little over a month ago, I'm taking no chances. |

Got my 360 on Boxing Day 2006. It was a month after Sonic Next-Gen came out, and I wanted to give the game a shot. I was pretty sure I'd get my hands on other games for the system as well. I'm not sure if the RRoD would affect a 360 that old. Would it? Actually, I think it may be most likely. |

Well, any 360 can get a RRoD at any given time. They're so common because of general hardware issues Microsoft never properly addressed. There have been reports of systems not even lasting a full year before the dreaded RRoD; hell, IGN's 360 staff has apparently gone through something like three or four of the things since it launched. In regards to this update, however, it doesn't seem to matter how old it is. People have gptten RRoD'd from this update with systems as new as a month old to as old as launch day. It's kind of a crapshoot. |

This is one of the few incidents that make me glad my internet conection's not reliable enough to hook up my 360 to anything online. My sympathies to any RRoD-ers. There's a few ways the RRoD, mostly involving over-heating the system with towel. I'll try to find the link. Do we know if anybody tried that yet? |
