So, I downloaded the old news Beta for Windows 7 a little late, but I don't see anything about it around here so I thought I'd give my word on it. As a replacement OS for Windows Vista, Windows 7 will be a HUGE step up from it's predecessor. It took up about 10 gigs less for me on the install, which I found absolutely hilarious. It also uses around 500-600mb of RAM instead of a gig, leading to much faster bootup times, which is a big relief from vista. It runs alot faster than even my factory installed Vista, and my drivers all work perfectly. All of the programs I've installed run just fine, not a single compatibility issue so far. Then again, I only put away 15gb for space into the partition of my HDD, eight or nine of which were taken up by the operation system. I am not, however, a big fan of some of the changes. The new Apple Mac esque taskbar takes alot of getting used to and feels slippery while using it. The annoying, nagging UAC security is still there, though you can manage it alot more in this particular OS, and Microsoft, yet again, changed around alot of the menus, in particular, the control panel, making simple tasks somewhat confusing and frustrating. It is indeed a beautiful OS though. It looks alot better than Vista in my opinion, and can compete with the aesthetic appeal of Apple's OS X Leopard. I haven't had it more than a day yet, so some of my opinions may be flawed or incorrect, but as of now, I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Especially for a beta. Would I recommend replacing your current OS with it? No, not yet. If you want to test it out, use a spare computer or partition your drive like I did. (but be careful doing that, you can brick your pc easy doing that) But even in it's beta state, I prefer it over Vista for the most part. Right now, it is my primary OS because I'm sending this laptop in for repair in a couple of days anyway, so I have to format my Vista partition soon to clean it off and then this side, so I'm just having fun with it. ....but I still like XP more as of now...... ![]() [edit: LOL spl chk] |

Exactly what I said. Although, I kind of like the simplicity. Makes me feel like I'm NOT getting scammed. |

Mojave is just a marketing gimmick to sell people on Vista. It actually is Vista. They call it something different to keep any bad ideas of Vista out of experiences. Then they report the positive experiences. The reason the marketing gimmick fails is because the people who took the tests with Vista are nobodies who are guided through a tour by a rep. They don't experience the installation problems, the poor compatibility, any of the DRM schemes that cripple your rights. Stuff like that. |

A friend of mine was recently telling me about Windows 7 and showed me a video of how is computer ran with it. I think Windows 7 is pretty hott but I'm not sure if I'll give the BETA a go. Can't be bothered with installing everything and such when I've got such a busy schedule. Perhaps I'll give the official release a try. Anyone know when the official release will be...released? |

We're not a hundred percent sure. Most I've heard is that it's going to be released by the end of 2009. Other than that we have no concrete information on an official release. One thing I want out of this? Less of the DRM bull**** they were putting in Vista and less of their restrictions that came with it. It's annoying and I don't like being told how many times I can install software I've bought. And companies wonder why pirating software has been on the rise more than ever before. |

It's my solid belief that every OTHER Windows OS is great. Think about it. 95 was pretty sad, 98 was just amazing, ME was god-awful, XP is... well.. it's XP, goddamn, and then Vista was a disappointment. |

I hope that formula holds true to this one. Vista was a complete wash thanks to a great deal of restrictions and the DRM nonsense that the entertainment corporations have been trying to use for a couple years now to public backlash each time. It'd be nice to drop the low points of the OS, take the things it did right and improve on the package. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that's what we'll see here. Microsoft has a nasty habit of continually using unethical business policies and software; whether it's with their computer systems or with video game systems like the X-Box 360. One of the funniest being how Microsoft inflated Vista's numbers to make it look like it wasn't such a failure. Something tell's me that this upcoming deal here will be no different. But, who knows. Maybe they'll learn their lesson this time. Vista being a pile of garbage led to just about everyone and their grandmother going with XP. Even businesses shunned Vista. Microsoft doesn't want that to happen a second time, I'm sure; having a second operating system in a row shunned in favor of one from four or five years ago would be quite embarassing.
Oh man, is it ever. I have it on my only computer still working as it came packed in. So I unfortunately suffer through that atrocity every time I turn on the computer. I'm not sure which is actually worse; Vista or ME. ***************** Oh, one thing I forgot; the price of this thing had better not be so damn much this time. Vista's price was disgustingly gross. |

There are different rumors being spread around about that still being in and it not. It's a mystery as of now But even in Beta, I don't feel as restricted. It seems alot easier for me to do alot of different things in Seven that I couldn't do in Vista.
That's exactly what I tell people. I think Microsoft just tries something new every now and then, fail, and then learn from their mistakes pretty quickly.
I was told yesterday by people at HP that Microsoft has hinted to them about a release in this coming holiday season. |

Am I the only person that has never had a problem with Vista so far? People always talk about this and that about Vista and I've seen nothing wrong with it so far. Maybe it's because I'm just the average consumer though, the one that knows just enough about his machine to know how to do his job and how to hop online as well. I guess my question is... why is Windows 7 better than Vista. Heck, why was XP better than both? I honestly can't tell the difference. |

Did your copy of Vista come factory installed? If so, chances are you won't have most, if ANY of the issues most people face. Although, mine came factory installed and I'm having many issues with you. For one, it runs slow as sin for me, which is odd considering I have a 2 ghz Dual Core processor with 2 (soon going to be 3) gigs of RAM. It should run just fine, just like Seven runs just fine. Two, the startup times are killer. :/ It usually takes between 5-10 minutes, just to reboot. With seven, it takes under 3, counting the time spent typing in my boot up password and logon password. Three, the memory usage is painful. Vista used atleast 15 gigs of HDD space for me, AND a whole gig of RAM just to run. Seven uses around 7 or 8 gigs of space, and about 500-600 mb of RAM. Therefore making everything faster. And last but not least, COMPATIBILITY. Vista has had SO many issues with me and given me so many headaches. But as for the BETA, I haven't had but one compatibility issue, and that's with an antivirus/firewall designed FOR Windows Vista and updates WITH Windows Vista, causing it to crash when I tried to run it on Seven. But every other Vista and XP programs I've tried running have worked. I've gotten to test out a few more because I shaved off an extra 13 or 14 gigs off of my C drive and put it on my S drive. XP is just plain amazing because it's fast, adaptable, quiet, and takes up hardly any memory at all. It's a classic and long lasting operating system that I used ever since it came out and I've never had a single issue with it. But Vista is just fine for someone who doesn't really do much with their computer except for surfing the net, playing SOME games, chatting, listining to, watching, and sharing videos, pictures, and music. Ohhhh, I played with the UAC with Seven today. It is FAAARRRRRRRRR less annoying and WAY more customizable then Vista's.

Yeah, mine came factory installed because I'm a lazy lazy man. Granted, it's not exactly slow for me. I think it takes about 5 minutes from the time I turn the power on to the moment I can get around to doing stuff. Usually much less. And it runs just fine. But again, factory installed and I've got four gigs of ram to play with, so I'm good I guess. Thanks for the answers though, much appreciated. Good to know I won't have to worry about much. All I need to have work on my computers is Excel, Word, Epitome PMS, Simply and maybe ACCPAC. Note: Proof I'm computer dumb? UAC means nothing to me.

Well you're definately set up right. With four gigs, Vista would run like a dream when factory installed. Oh, UAC is User Account Control, it's the annoying popups you get every time you try to do something. |
