While Sonic's trying to redeem himself while also turning into a Werehog in an upcoming platform title, and brandishing a sword in the sequel to Sonic and the Secret Rings, apparently he's also got "Look back on glory days" in his schedule.

Reported to be a rumour a while back, this rumour has now been confirmed to be true. This will be an upcoming compilation package of Genesis games that will be released in early 2009 for the 360 and PS3. Forty titles will be part of this collection, including all of the major Sonic titles for the Sega Genesis (Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic Spinball, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and Sonic 3D Blast). The title of this collection for Europe will be appropriately named "Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection", although Sega seems to be calling the North American port, "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection". Odd, considering that Sonic isn't the only star in this package. But anyway, forty games for this package, including some unlockable titles. Sonic CD and Knuckles' Chaotix haven't been announced as unlockable games, but I wouldn't rule them out.

So it's basically Sonic Mega Collection with an asinine amount of awesome games from the Genesis era piled on?

... I can live with that. Though I'd prefer such a collection, except with all the games being everything Sonic at least up to Sonic Adventure. Maybe up to Sonic Adventure 2 if they could fit such on a Blu-Ray disc.

Either way... I can't see a loser on that list, so assuming this has perfect emulation of the games, we could be in for a good time.

All of Sonic's Genesis games have been put in compilation games ten times over (yeah, I'm exaggerating, but still...). Why does Sega keep doing this?

Well, I guess it's because they respect our wishes to play the old games as much as we want, and give us a compilation every once in a while, so I'll give 'em that.

Though I still say the title's a misnomer. "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection"? Why call it that when the Genesis-era Sonic games aren't the only titles in this package? This should just be called "Sega Genesis Ultimate Collection", so it can counter the UK's "Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection".

Also, the release date for the collection has been tentatively set to Winter 2009. At first, I thought we were gonna be getting this at the end of next year, but then I think, "Wait a minute, it wouldn't take that long to emulate some Genesis games to some next-gen consoles, and release it, would it?" So, then I think by Winter 2009, they must mean maybe sometime in January, or February.

The Sonic name draws more interest and looks than the Sega Genesis itself. Simple as that.

It wasn't a Genesis only title either. It was also on the SNES. This seems to be geared both towards Sonic and classic Genesis only titles.

Collections like this make the Virtual Console service of the Wii so completely useless it's not even funny. I love it.

Alright. I checked around, and I found some titles that are apparently part of the 40 games in this collection.

Dynamite Headdy
ESWAT: City Under Siege
Shining in the Darkness
Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention
Shining Force II: The Ancient Seal

Woot, everybody. Woot.

Hello all. I knew I'd eventually have to get Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the 360 and review it, considering that it looked like Sega's best compilation title so far. And it is. There are many great Genesis titles in there, along with some unlockable arcade and Master System games for you to play. And this huge next-gen collection is all only $39.99 (ten dollars cheaper for those living in the US). Not a bad price, really. So, let's look into this huge museum.

Gameplay: 8/10
Including the unlockable games, this collection has a total of 49 games in here. In alphabetical order:

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Alien Storm
Alien Syndrome
Altered Beast
Altered Beast (arcade)
Beyond Oasis
Bonanza Bros.
Columns
Comix Zone
Congo Bongo
Decap Attack Starring Chuck D. Head
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
Dynamite Headdy
ESWAT: City Under Siege
Ecco the Dolphin
Ecco: The Tides of Time
Fantasy Zone
Fatal Labyrinth
Flicky
Gain Ground
Golden Axe
Golden Axe II
Golden Axe III
Golden Axe Warrior
Kid Chameleon
Phantasy Star
Phantasy Star II
Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom
Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
Ristar
Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention
Shining Force II: The Ancient Seal
Shining in the Darkness
Shinobi (arcade)
Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
Sonic 3D Blast
Sonic & Knuckles
Sonic Spinball
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Space Harrier (arcade)
Streets of Rage
Streets of Rage 2
Streets of Rage 3
Super Thunder Blade
Vectorman
Vectorman 2
Zaxxon

Sadly, none of the Sonic & Knuckles lock-on titles are in here (Blue Sphere, Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles), though I think the reason for their loss is for Sega to put in the unlockable titles. I guess Phantasy Star fans should be thankful that the first game is finally in a collection, huh?

All of these games' controls are emulated perfectly, and the games manage splendidly because of it. There are a lot of good games to play from this list, like Sonic 1, 2, 3, and Knuckles, Alex Kidd, Kid Chameleon, Super Thunder Blade, the first two Vectorman games, Flicky, Dynamite Headdy, Bonanza Bros.... honestly, I could go on. Although, Congo Bongo, one of the unlockable titles, has gameplay that feels very familiar... Can't really think of it though.

Although there are a lot of good games here, there are a few that I think this collection could've done without. But then, fans of those games would kill me for saying that, so I guess it all depends on what type of games you're into. For instance, I was never particularly good at beat-em-ups, so it's no surprise that I died very easily in Alien Storm, and the Golden Axe and Streets of Rage titles. I don't really get ESWAT at all. Ecco the Dolphin I and II and their difficulty can just go f### themselves. And I'm not all too fond of most of the RPG titles in this package, like the Phantasy Star titles, or Beyond Oasis, or Fatal Labyrinth, or even the first title in the Shining series, Shining in the Darkness. Shining Force I and II, though, they're excellent exceptions, they can be good fun to get into.

All in all, whichever video game genre you're into, be it platforming, beat-em-ups, puzzles, or whatever, chances are you'll find a good game here.

If I had to pick a personal favourite out of these games, it'd have to be Ristar. Play it, and you might get why.

Design: 9/10
Even in this day and age, all of the Sega Genesis games here have brilliant, BRILLIANT graphics! Platform games like the main Sonic titles are bright, colourful, and very cheery to look at. And many of the other games look just as great to look at. Each game you play has a frame around the screen that fits its respective game. For instance, a frame around the Sonic & Knuckles screen with Rings on it. And that's kind of cool.

The main menu interface is bloody fantastic! As far as the list of Genesis games go, you can sort them out in alphabetical order, by their genres, or by the years they were released in. Or you can even sort the list out by which games are your favourite, and which games are your least favourite. How does it know this? There's a ranking meter beside each title. You can simply push left or right while selecting the title to rank it as your most or least favourite.

I really, really like how the menu looks like the top of a Sega Genesis system, and a Genesis cartridge, it's very clever. Each game also has some history, trivia facts, and artwork to look at. It's all here. I even like some of Sega's efforts to make fun of themselves here and there, like the beginning of the summary of Sonic 3D Blast's story, or this little "trivia fact" for Sonic Spinball. "A Pinball Defense System, Robotnik? That's your best plan to stop Sonic? Really?"

Along with unlockable games, there are also video interviews with Sega staff members. ...Video interviews that were taken directly from the PS2/PSP collection, Sega Genesis Collection! Are you kidding me?! You put all of this time and effort into this really great collection for the 360 and PS3, and you COULDN'T find any time to conduct some new interviews?!

Overall: 9/10
Eh, whatever. With all that said, this really is a great collection of old Genesis games. There's something in here for everyone, and with such a low price, you will NOT be disappointed.

I think that overall the collection could have stood to lose the first Streets of Rage and Golden Axe, respectively. Most of the refinements and classic gameplay those series are remembered for came in the sequels anyways. Beat-em-up's really don't have much reason to have each succesive title, each one with small refinements to the last, all compiled on a disc when the space could be better spent.

Having all the Phantasy Star series finally on one disc/cartridge/whatever is a joy to see. I was getting sick of those compilations that only snatched up the last three.

The roster in general is impressive. The only real changes I'd make would be to, again, drop the first title in the Golden Axes and Streets of Rage series and stuff the Toejam & Earl games on there. They were Genesis only, after all, and were very, very close to being more or less the Sega mascots.

I've had the pleasure of playing that one before. I enjoyed it quite a bit. But I do have to admit I never really understood quite why so many people sang it's praises as much as they did. It's great, for sure, but some people really tend to overhype the ever loving s*** out of it.

I know I wasn't quite sure what to expect going into it the first time, because the way some people belted about it I half expected sheer gaming perfection.

I think it may have something to do with Ristar's development team. This game was actually made by the same development team who worked on the Genesis era Sonic games. The visuals were what Sonic fans had come to expect. And it certainly felt like a Sonic game, save for the lack of speed. In fact, I'd even go so far as to say that Ristar's even better than the Genesis era Sonic games.

That's not to say that the classic Sonic games are horrible by any means, but I like Ristar because Sonic Team did something completely different with this title. Shame it might not ever get a sequel, but we'll just have to see.

It's probably best it doesn't get a sequel. See the Nights into Dreams sequel for proof.
