Heh. Y'know, part of the reason why I didn't post a topic about this is because we already have two topics in this thread about two upcoming Sonic games. I figured I should at least wait until Sonic Chronicles is released, play it, give a review on it, then post a topic about Black Knight. Alright, so nothing else new has come from Sega about this game, but I'm just gonna go ahead and say it right now. I have no doubt at all that the gameplay will be decent, and the MotionPlus would be a definite for this game. I just |

Well, seeing as how Frungus has posted a topic on the game, I guess I can't help but post some new stuff I found over at the Sonic Stadium website. Sonic fansite, Blue Blur, got a copy of the September 2008 issue of Nintendo Power, put up some scans of artwork and screenshots, and have posted all the new info that Sonic Team were willing to reveal: -Developed by the same people as Sonic and the Secret Rings -"This time, a sorceress named Merlina summons Sonic to the mythical realm of King Arthur, but it seems the fabled monarch has somehow been corrupted and now rules the land as the tyrannical Black Knight." -Uses a similar storybook device as Secret Rings -"As Sonic runs along, a simple flick of the Wii remote will execute a basic slash, which is enough to dispatch most low-level grunts." -More advanced swordplay consists of the ability to thrust, parry, and even pull off a buzz-saw maneuver midjump. -"During our demo, we saw the hedgehog leap from a high precipice, then thrust the blade into a wall to slow his descent, sparks flying impressively as steel cut through brick." -"Combat is integrated in such a way that most of the time you can slice through any who stand in your path without even slowing down." -Sonic is controlled with the Control Stick. -"Our hero begins his quest as a mere knave. Only by becoming a full-fledged knight will he have any hope of defeating King Arthur." -"...his sword, a talking blade named Calibur, serves as a mentor." -If you help civilian townsfolk in need of assistance, you'll earn points toward knighthood. If you smite one of those civilians, your reputation will take a hit. -"At the end of each stage, the game tallies your good and not-so-good deeds and updates your rank accordingly." -You can purchase items from residents. "Sonic can acquire everything from gauntlets to magical tomes to new swords, and when equipped, each article bestows him with a unique benefit." -About 200 items in all, with some being able to be combined with others to make new ones. -You have the option to go online and trade items with friends. -Rings come in burlap sacks instead of monitors. -Sonic uses magic elementals to help him do various things, such as a bounce pad or a speed boost. They look like Chao heads. The red ones give him a jump and the blue ones give Sonic a speed boost. -Sonic can cross large gaps by firing a ballista and grinding the rope to the other side. -"On the audio side, veteran composer Jun Senoue is taking a similar approach, injecting familiar Sonic themes with a Celtic flavour." -"Each stage has multiple branching paths and searching for townsfolk and treasure chests provides an element of exploration that recalls Sonic's early Genesis days." -"...the camera will occasionally pan to a side-scrolling perspective for a quick dose of classic 2-D action." -Sonic and the Black Knight is bringing back the skill system from Secret Rings, but they're trying not to have the skill system interfere with the game's tempo this time around. -The mission structure also returns but the developers hope to make it less arduous. -"And there will be no dinosaur eggs!" -"Just as they subbed in for such characters as Ali Baba and Aladdin in Sonic and the Secret Rings, a number of familiar faces will assume Arthurian personas in Sonic and the Black Knight." -"This time, however, some of Sonic's friends will be playable. Each hero will boast unique abilities, and though the team isn't ready to divulge the full cast just yet, we do know the identities of two playable comrades: Knuckles, who brandishes two swords at once, and Shadow." -Playing as these other characters is entirely optional. You will be able to play through the game as Sonic, or switch to the other characters if you choose. -A new special gauge will "bestow him with similarly impressive powers. The meter fills gradually whenever Sonic vanquishes an enemy or snags a purple elemental, and when it reaches a certain point you can unleash a powerful combination attack capable of tearing through multiple foes in quick succession." -"...the team behind Sonic and the Black Knight is keenly aware of the franchise's past missteps, and their enthusiasm for doing right by the series is infections."

I checked around for anything Sonic related, and found some scans over at tssznews.com. Here's a look at what King Arthur/Black Knight looks like.![]() Hm. Not at all like the Monty Python version I expected him to be. |

You know, screw character designs. I want to know how this damn thing is going to work. Swords? I adore a good swordfight thrown into just about anything. But swordfights or even just fighting with them requires precision and grace. Swordfights can tend to be much slower affairs. Sonic is not slow. He's fast. So stopping to engage in a swordfight with an enemy sounds stupidly jarring. And then if it's something stupid like slashing at enemies while you run along, then what the hell's the point? Sonic's gotten along fine slicing things in half without an actual blade. It's been his damn MO for as long as the character has been around. DL to Sonic Team: STOP TRYING TO REINVENT SONIC. HE DOES NOT NEED GIMMICKS TO WORK. |

He doesn't need a damn sword, period. In fact, if they took the sword away and just made the gameplay similar to but slightly better than Secret Rings, the game that this is supposed to be a sequel to, then I'd be looking forward to this. But no, Sonic Team decides to stick him with a sword, and try to make the gameplay focus around speed, and swordplay. What the hell's the point of the sword? As you put it, Damien, Sonic can buzzsaw through enemies just fine without a sword. Shadow, I can understand, because it's Shadow. He's a dark character who's comfortable with and capable of handling a lot of weapons, be it a sword or a gun. But Sonic? No. Giving Sonic a weapon of any kind is a big no-no. |

Considering he has the spindash, could tuck himself into a roll, spins when he jumps and several other things, the damn hedgehog is a living weapon in and of himself. One can't really justify handing what amounts to a living blade a broadsword. Man, do these guys even know what they're doing? I've been hitting up other Sonic sites since I heard the news. This game is like the laughing stock of the internet. I don't think I've seen so many image macro's pop up for a game before. Plus it's just another example of Sonic Team being completely unable to keep their own continuity straight. One game says Sonic would never use weapons, another gives him one. One game gives a character or two one origin, one gives another. Complete and utter meh.
This could be the saving grace of a bad concept. XD |

Probably the only good thing I can gather out of this is the setting of the game. The Arthurian times. I always did enjoy seeing stuff that took place in more medieval settings, like the Sword in the Stone, Robin Hood, Quest for Camelot... even Monty Python and the Holy Grail gives me a laugh. |

Finally, some news of this game after its initial announcement in Nintendo Power. Apparently, Sonic and the Black Knight is going to feature a gallery illustrating Sonic's past, and Sega wants the fan community involved. Look at this.
http://www.sega.com/sonicblackknight/contest/us/ Wait a second. I'm over 13. I live in Canada. I'm an artist. And... free copy of the game? I know I'm entering.
