You know, it's kind of funny. I think that if 2K6 had a little more time in the oven, it could have been a pretty decent game. Hinted beastiality aside, the game apparently had a pretty good story. But at that point, everyone had pretty much had just about enough of the buggy Adventure engine. It was where the game fell apart for many, though some had a few justifiable concerns about the "more adult" storyline they were trying to present.

Had the game been delayed and more work put in, a lot of people probably would have had better things to say about it. The game looked good, that much everyone could agree on.

Oh well. At least it looks like Sonic Team is getting their act together now.

Ugh. The bestiality bit again. Okay. It's time I said something about the matter.

Yes, realistically, the relationship between Sonic and Elise would not only be considered weird, but perhaps indicative of mental instability. However, the issue arises when one asks, "To what extent is Sonic what we casually consider an animal?" Is he not capable of reason, introspection, verbal language, and any of the other mental processes that we constantly proclaim make us above and worth more than an animal? Does he have an appreciation of, or at the very least, an understanding of our cultural advances and technological innovation beyond that of our pets? If not so to any of the above, why has he been subject to the federal rights and regulations that are considered restrictive to only human beings, excluding special cases, with nary a complaint about the species-related morality of the issue from either the Sonic universe's fictional habitants, or the fanbase?

Take into account that Sonic's an anthropomorphic hedgehog. On answers.com, anthropomorphism is defined as "attribution of human motivation, characteristics, or behavior to inanimate objects, animals, or natural phenomena." Isn't Sonic just as human as the rest of us? So if it's okay for him to have feelings and thoughts that a human's also capable of having, why is it inherently wrong for him to have a romantic relationship with a human?

Dude, it doesn't matter. He's an animal, plain and simple; it's still gross and still a no-no. You can debate his intelligence and such all you want, but it doesn't change things. If a cat suddenly gains sentience and the ability to talk, I don't expect anyone would suddenly find it alright for some guy to have... relations with it.

He's far more animal that anything else. It's not like the grey areas of kitsunes or catgirls. Also, it's the kind of story direction a franchise with Sonic did NOT need to go; which is why people found 2K6's "mature" parts of the storyline embarassing. It doesn't work for everything and it doesn't work for Sonic. The more "mature" elements are part of the franchises tailspin in the first place.

Eh. Fudge it. I can already tell I'm not gonna win the argument about the human-animal relationships.

But yeah, the darker elements of the franchise don't work for the character. Well, not for Sonic specifically, 'cuz he's too upbeat. It can work for certain parts of the franchise though, like how Shadow the Hedgehog is a big more dark and gritty. The destruction of most of the echidna civilization 3000 years ago.

Sonic's death at the beginning of the Last Story of Next-Gen... it was a real shocker.

The more mature parts do work in the context of Shadow, but only if they were to keep it relatively removed from everything else. Sonics world is a pretty big one; it's easy enough for him to have plenty of darker adventures without impeding on Sonic's portion.

But in regards to Sonic himself, it shouldn't invade his parts. Like you even admitted, it doesn't work.

Admitted, but it was kind of pushing it.

Now, I can easily compare this to Mario's RPG adventures. Mario is a happy-go-lucky plumber whose attitude and personality never wavers, even in the darkest situations. Near the end of Super Paper Mario when Tippi thinks that Peach, Bowser, and Luigi are well, finished, Mario doesn't even show a hint of sadness, 'cuz he's confident that they're fine and they're still alive.

See, that's the kind of approach I see Sonic taking. No matter how bleak the situation seems, Sonic just never loses that carefree attitude of his, and remains determined to save the day like he always does.

Now, we've got this werewolf curse that's been placed upon Sonic. Sonic Team has confirmed that Sonic and his werewolf counterpart are like Bruce Banner and Hulk. He'll transform unwillingly every night, yet his heroic personality will remain. Mm. Well, we'll see. As long as he remains a determined hero through and through, I guess I'm good.

Sonic fansite, "Camp Sonic" has made their own fact sheet for Sonic Unleashed, out of disappointment of Sega's fact sheet released after their Gamer Day, which was more like a promotional campaign of sorts. So, for those of you who haven't been up to date with the latest on Sonic Unleashed, here's Camp Sonic's fact sheet. This is what's happening with the game so far here.

Characters
-No new characters have been announced up to this point, except for Sonic's werewolf form.

-Silver will not be making an appearance in Sonic Unleashed. (Play Magazine)

-Tails and Knuckles have both been confirmed to appear in Sonic Unleashed. New characters will be kept to a minimum. (UK Official PlayStation Magazine)

-Amy is also confirmed to appear in Sonic Unleashed. (Official Nintendo Magazine)

-By day, Sonic will be the blue hedgehog we all know and love, but when the sun sets, he turns into a werewolf with claws and fangs. This does make a difference to the gameplay, as the werewolf is slower but stronger, meaning he can swing around levels, move obstacles, and hurl enemies around. (Official Nintendo Magazine)

-Image of Sonic and his werewolf form.

-Dr. Eggman will make an appearance in Sonic Unleashed. (Official announcement from Sega)

-You will be able to play as a character other than Sonic, although the focus of the game will definitely be on the hedgehog. (IGN from Sega's Gamer Day)

-Super Sonic is seen in this screenshot from Sonic Unleashed, but it is unknown if he will be playable, or when he will make his appearance.

-Dr. Eggman will wake a "slumbering beast" from the center of the world which will break the world into 7 pieces. It is believed that this beast may be one of the final adversaries of the game, and could very well be this dragon creature.

Story
During Sonic's quest in Sonic Unleashed, Dr. Eggman will use the 7 Chaos Emeralds against Sonic and the world to cause mass chaos! By utilizing their power, Eggman will transform Sonic into a Werehog, and divide up the planet into 7 different areas when he awakens an evil beast from the center of the planet!

It's up to Sonic to save the world, and turn himself back to normal by restoring the power of the Chaos Emeralds, and using them for good. He'll have to travel the 7 different regions of the world in order to do so!

Summarized from the Sonic Unleashed official fact sheet, and Sonic Unleashed official site summary.

Gameplay
-According to Yoshihisa Hashimoto, gameplay is split up between 2D and 3D about half and half throughout the game. (Play Magazine)

-Official Sonic Unleashed teaser trailer features some Sonic Unleashed gameplay footage.

-There will be multiple branching pathways throughout levels, giving players different choices of directions. (Sonic Unleashed fact sheet)

-All levels are to be based off of real world locations. The first daylight level will be Mykonos, Greece. Europe is confirmed to be the fourth level. Speculation has gone rampant as to other world locations, but many agree that there will be an Africa or Australia stage as well. (Interview with SoA team producer)

-There is no multiplayer. (Sega's Gamer Day)

-Sonic Unleashed will be released on the Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 2 & 3.

-The Wii and PlayStation 2 versions of Sonic Unleashed are being partly developed by Dimps, and will not be using the new Hedgehog Engine, which will power the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. Sonic Unleashed will be changed, tuned, and balanced for the Wii. (Nintendo Power Magazine)

-The game is called Sonic Unleashed. Not Sonic World Adventure, or Sonic Adventure 3. (Sega City Blognik)

-Sonic will have two forms in Sonic Unleashed. At times, he will transform into a werewolf. Sega released a teaser trailer for Sonic's new werewolf form.

-Werewolf Sonic will introduce an array of new gameplay mechanics. He is bigger, stronger, and will play differently than normal Sonic. He can toss enemies around like nobody's business. (Official Nintendo Magazine)

-There will be daytime and nighttime levels in Sonic Unleashed. It is highly believed that during the night, Sonic will transform into his new werewolf form. This is suggested on the official website for Sonic Unleashed: "Both day and night play different, yet important, roles in Sonic's newest quest... as the sun sets, an intriguing adventure awakens".

-Throughout the game, as Sonic gains experience, he will be able to learn new abilities as in previous titles. (Interview with SoA team producer)

-Ring energy is filled by collecting Rings, but the rate at which you collect Rings also plays a role in how fast the meter is filled. Using Ring energy will allow Sonic to engage another new mechanic called Sonic Boost, which will essentially send Sonic soaring at speeds up to 300mph. (Interview with SoA team producer)

-The game features an overworld with villages and side quests. If you'd rather just zip through traditional levels, you can ignore the overworld altogether, but it'll be there for those who want it. (Sega's Gamer Day)

-Several of Sonic's abilities have been revealed.

-The story of Sonic Unleashed is unrelated to the story told in Sonic the Hedgehog (360/PS3). Sonic Unleashed is a completely new game with an entirely new storyline and unrelated to Sonic the Hedgehog (360/PS3). (Play Magazine)

-The team has been working for the past three years on the Hedgehog Engine, which is being used to power both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game, while developers will be working hard to develop visuals that mimic the engine on the Nintendo Wii. (Play Magazine)

Important People
-Sonic Team producer - Yoshihisa Hashimoto

-Sound director for Sonic Unleashed - Tomoya Ohtani

-Sega of America team producer - Patrick Riley

That sounds pretty insistant. Does this mean Sega also wants to pretend 2K6 never happened?

Oh, I definitely approve of that. Such is what's really been missing from the games for a while.

It'd seem that way. A lot of people put hate on the game, and for good reason. The new team must've been embarrassed by this rush job, and they're really doing their best to patch up Sonic's career as a loved video game icon.

Mm, yes, yes. Quite so, good chap. Quite so.

Sonic's pre-Adventure titles, mainly Sonic 1-3&K, tried to separate themselves from Mario's own adventures, and they succeeded in a lot of ways, one of them being that you can choose which path to the end you wanna take. It wasn't straightforward like Mario.

If they get it right from here on, I'll forgive them for the past.

That's what I always said about them. It's part of why I didn't like the games post Adventure 2. Everything became so straightforward. Often, there was way too much focus on speed, when, while a pretty good part of things, it wasn't the main focus. It was always part speed and part exploring, the second of which got lost in the shuffle in recent years.

The first Adventure wasn't so bad. There were a couple differing paths through the levels to be found. Not as many as in the past, but it retained enough of the old school flavor to make it a worthy jump to 3D. Adventure 2 skipped the multiple paths and while it still cut the mustard, it was the beginning of the end.

I'll be glad to have multiple paths back. The franchise needs them or they just turn into speedier Mario games. Hell, Mario gives more exploration options these days than Sonic!

Take a look at 64/DS, Sunshine, and Galaxy, and you'll all know why. And even then, Mario's had some stinkers from time to time. For instance, I never played through it all, so I don't understand why some people just don't like Sunshine too much.

They don't like the waterpack, usually. It impedes on the typical platforming of Mario games by adding more options. Purists don't like thet often enough; most of them were looking for something far more akin to another Super Mario 64.

Oddly, I found the game to be a complete blast to play because of the waterpack. Felt it added a lot to the experience. Plus the game was overall fun to play, far larger and even more polished than 64.

Shame they got rid of the waterpack, but Galaxy rocked ass anyways, so s'alright.

Haven't played Galaxy yet, but I really, really, REALLY want to. It looks really fun to play, and of course over at KH:O, I'm still planning on making a Galaxy adaption, as soon as I get the game and play through it.

Well, anyway, back on the topic of Mario, and Sonic... it seems that in terms of story, Sonic seems to like making references to previous entries in the series' storyline, whereas Mario... there's little to no story references to previous games whatsoever. But I know that the castle being lifted up in the sky in Galaxy was something akin to the first Paper Mario.

Well, Mario games live or die on their gameplay, which is why they're so good. Such is an approach Sonic has needed to take for a while now instead of relying on story.

I mean, let's face it; Mario game storylines are cookie cutter at best. The Princess is kidnapped and taken to (insert place that demands the new games gammick). The only one that really tried to tell a story was Super Mario RPG, and that was handled by Square.

No wonder it was a good RPG game, it had an awesome development team. XD

Well, it's said that Unleashed's... 's... 's... bleh. The story and gameplay of Unleashed are gonna be balanced out. Sonic Team wants to have a good story for this game, but they're also going to be working on making the gameplay exceptional. Sounds promising, I guess.

Wanna know what's even worse than some of Sonic's recent games?

Fans.

No, I'm serious. Fans. The fanbase, the fan reception of the games and the comics and the cartoons, fanboys, fangirls... Granted that fans like you and I are more mature, but there are those that just... just...

The ones who mostly write Sonic fanfics are fangirls, it'd seem. Fangirls' fanfic stories are a lot more cookie cutter. They make up a love interest for an official character, their parents get killed by Eggman, they grow up, they run into Sonic, they become good friends, they fall in love... they kill Eggman...

In some certain fanfics, they automatically make Sonic a king, because he is the main character of the franchise. Oh, I'm sure that he's going to be happy ruling over a kingdom at the age of 15. Oh yeah. The guy who loves to be free is gonna sit in a f###ing chair all day. Are fans really this stupid?!? Are fans really stupid enough that they write Sonic fanfics and mess with the personalities of official characters?!
