Apparently, Sonic Unleashed is one of Sega's upcoming games that will have PS3 Trophy support. This information comes from Joystiq's blog, PS3 Fanboy. No sign of any lists of the Trophies though, or Achievements for the 360 version.

Also, Nishiyama's answered a question in some interviews. The question in particular being if there will be a Sonic game similar to the recently released Mega Man 9, in which Sonic will have a downloadable 16-bit game, or if there will be a remake of an old Sonic title.

There's always the possibility. Whether it would be viable remains to be seen, but having a new game - or even a remake of the GBA games, which we now can't use [thanks to the DSi] - would certainly be possible.

And finally, a gameplay video of the PS3 version of Sonic Unleashed.

A major point of fan concern regarding Sonic Unleashed has been the "Hold right to win" vibe many are getting from preview videos. Now that the game has been playtested at the just completed Tokyo Game Show, many of those fears can be put to rest--if only from observing how lame those who picked up and played the game at the expo were.

Some new video from GameVideos.com shows one such MVP performance. We can take comfort in the fact that this appears to be one of the first clear glimpses at the PS3 edition. What we can't take comfort in is how the player just jumped off the platform to Sonic's death for no reason in the middle of the video. That E rank at the end is well deserved.

More gameplay videos of different versions of the game from TGS.

360 version
PS3 version
Wii version

Are these people so extraordinarily bad at the game or are the controls really that hard to work with? I'm gonna bet on the former, because some of these people seem to make such mistakes, like jumping over a set of springs and falling to their deaths. They really don't seem to know what they're doing.

EDIT: Some new screens of the Wii port.

Sorry--if you were hoping that playable copies of Sonic Unleashed would be coming to a stop near you, this is something completely different.

Apparently Sega will be releasing new information on Sonic Unleashed in the weeks leading up to launch in the form of a "World Tour", as they detail some of the areas Sonic and his nighttime Werehog alter-ego will be globetrotting. The first one focuses on the Africa stage, Mazuri. You'll also get a refresher of the plot behind Unleashed. Also note at the end that the Playstation 2 version will be budget priced at $29.95.

We'll continue to post these as the releases come along.

Sega

In honor of the Werehog's limited ability to appear in daylight hours, we will send out these informative blasts celebrating the full moon and all the entertainment and mischievous chaos it brings to life.
To start, let's step back and make sure you know where the story begins -- Dr. Eggman is once again causing trouble and is finally cornered by Sonic. Though it seems certain these are his final moments and Dr. Eggman has FINALLY been stopped, it all turns out to be a ruse and instead it was Sonic who was lured into a trap. Dr. Eggman grabs the Chaos emeralds and uses their dark powers to wake the Dark Gaia -- a huge monster who has spent many years sleeping at the center of the earth. The earth breaks into seven pieces with the force of the Dark Gaia's abrupt and angry awakening. Sonic is also touched by this dark power and is changed in ways he can't even begin to imagine. Soon after his transformation, he is thrown into space and is left to fall to his death on the scattered pieces of a broken earth. Sonic survives and begins an epic adventure to return the world to its rightful form!
Sonic's adventure begins in Apotos where players are left to discover skills never before seen in the Sonic universe. He is now able to do a quick step -- allowing him to move quickly from side to side without breaking his pace. This comes in handy immensely when he needs to dodge around walls and other obstacles while collecting rings. Another new move is the drift. Fans of racing games will be familiar with this ability to turn corners quickly and efficiently without losing momentum. Finally, there is the intense Sonic Boost. Players will collect rings to fill a meter that initiates the Sonic Boost! This super-fast move will allow Sonic to travel at speeds measuring up to 300 mph within the game world -- faster than in any previous Sonic title!
Once they have mastered these new moves they are left to explore this island nation dotted with windmills that takes full advantage of the stunning 2D/3D gameplay transitions. As they hop from island to island, players will be introduced to all-new enemies which they have to defeat or evade in order to complete their quest. Players will have to explore each area to discover hidden medals opening new secret missions to tackle.
Once the sun dips below the horizon and the moon hangs overhead, players are introduced, for the first time, to nighttime gameplay and the Werehog. The dark powers of the Chaos Emerald have changed Sonic into something seemingly beast-like -- though still possessing Sonic's fierce drive to do good. This is the first time players will learn how to take advantage of the Werehog's new powers -- incredible strength and flexible arms. Using these new powers, players will be able to climb poles, pull themselves up and over walls, and battle a new set of enemies who only emerge at night. Solving simple introductory puzzles will also be a key element in this level of the game and players have to navigate this island paradise to find out how to make it through the night and find Tails -- hidden somewhere to avoid the creepy enemies that have invaded this nighttime world. Once the Werehog saves his foxy friend, Tails whisks himself and Sonic onto the Tornado and, after a brief stop in Spagonia (more on this area later), they head onto Mazuri!
Mazuri -- inspired by Africa -- is packed with stunning warm earth tones and clay architecture. But this is no holiday and Sonic is on the move as soon as the level starts. This level changes things around by starting off first under the cover of night -- with only the glowing full moon to show gamers the way. Of course, with the full moon comes the world's most curious nighttime creature -- the Werehog! This stage introduces players to new creatures for the Werehog to battle as he works his way through the level by swinging, climbing, and solving puzzles. Puzzles get more complex in this level asking players to think hard as they make their way through to the end of Mazuri. Logic and problem-solving skills will be a player's best friend here.
Once gamers make it through the night and back to the heat of the shining sun, they will be ready to take advantage of the all-new speed moves they have learned. Mazuri will continue to give gamers a chance to improve their speedy abilities and enjoy more side-scrolling action than any other level in the game. In his attempts to save the world as he knows it, Sonic will zip through this level uncovering secret paths filled with rings and shortcuts taking some classic Sonic grinding on paths high up overlooking the Mazuri landscape! Timing will be essential in making it unscathed and full of rings through this level.
Can the Werehog make it through Mazuri on this quest to save the world? Tune in next full moon to find out!
Sonic Unleashed is rated E10+ and will launch this holiday season for Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 (at $59.95 MSRP), Wii (at $49.95 MSRP) and PlayStation 2 (at $29.95 MSRP).

Hmm. A promotional tour to demonstrate the key aspect of Unleashed. Surprising, but not unexpected. Good for them. Maybe they will have the sense to show off some of the differences to the old 3D games too; it could earn themselves back a bit of cred at the same time as promotion.

We can only hope. Comparing Unleashed to the older 3D games would be a good move on their part.

EDIT: Unleashed has been getting really hyped up lately. Its showing at TGS, a tour promotion, and now... Sega's Patrick Riley has posted his own blog at IGN.

http://blogs.ign.com/SEGA_SonicUnleashed/2008/10/16/104015/

That's right. Patrick Riley is going to be constantly updating his blog, and--

WWWWWHHHAAAAAA?!? HOLY CRAP, THE ENTRY HAS TWO NEW SHOTS OF THE OPENING CUTSCENE OF THE GAME, SUPER SONIC LOOKS AWESOME, OMG, WTF, EGGMAN'S BEGGING FOR MERCY, DON'T BELIEVE HIM, SONIC, YOU'RE GONNA BE TRANSFORMED, HOLY, OMG!!!

...

*ahem*

Aaaaaaanywaaaaaay...

Patrick's going to be updating his blog constantly, providing us new information, and giving us a greater insight on all the different things about this game. Here's his first entry, which doesn't really tell us a lot of stuff we don't already know.

Patrick Riley

Hi there, my name is Patrick Riley and I am the producer of Sonic Unleashed here at Sega of America. My job is to work closely with the development team out in Japan and work on the game from our US office.

The team in Japan is a fantastic team to work with and all of you will see in the next little while what incredible work they have done to bring this new Sonic game to life. Filled with incredible Sonic speed-based gameplay, stunning international-inspired environments, and your favorite blue Hedgehog, Sonic Unleashed is the game we know Sonic fans have been waiting for!

Just to give you a little background, the team has been working on the Hedgehog Engine since 2005, and on the game itself since 2006. Their goal was both to take Sonic in an interesting new direction while returning Sonic to his roots by incorporating many of the classic elements that fans loved best. So they knew that lots of speed would be key in this game being successful. To add a new flavor, they decided to invite the Werehog. I'm not going to talk about him quite yet, but stay tuned for some Werehog updates in the next couple of weeks.

The story itself is based on an alternate world similar to our own in many ways. The game starts in the middle of the action, just like a Bond film. Dr. Eggman has once again caused serious amounts of trouble -- as he so loves to do -- and Sonic has finally cornered him and looks on the brink of finally winning their epic struggle. But it is all a ploy and Dr. Eggman uses that moment to steal the seven Chaos Emeralds and use them to break apart the earth and wake Dark Gaia -- a frighteningly huge monster. It is at that same moment that Sonic is exposed to the dark energy of those Chaos Emeralds and a beastly change takes place. Sonic is blown out of an airlock by Dr. Eggman, but survives the fall to Earth through the intervention of a strange energy source. Sonic is then left to figure out both how to bring the world back together and what this unbelievable change means for him.

Sonic's adventure begins here. He travels the world to put together the pieces of the fragmented planet as well as those of his own life now that so much has changed. He explores beautiful environments inspired by China, Greece, Africa and speeds through them in both 3D and 2.5D gameplay.

The team faced a lot of challenges in accomplishing their vision. First and foremost, we targeted multiple platforms -- PS3, 360, Wii, and PS2 -- so a big challenge was making sure that the game worked well on all platforms. For example, making sure that the Wii version really took advantage of the unique control system and the next-gen versions really took advantage of the power of the systems to make the game look amazing. Also, narrowing down the locations -- in a world like our where there are so many interesting places to visit, how do we choose just a few? There are just too many amazing sights in the world! Narrowing it down was quite the challenge.

Finally, making sure that we gave fans the Sonic game they were really looking for was truly number one on our mind. The team is made up of people who love Sonic, who have worked on many Sonic titles, and who felt passionate about the experience they believed Sonic could offer on any system. Creating that perfect game was something we spent a lot of time discussing- all the pros and cons of what could and couldn't work -- what fans loved and what fans hated -- what we loved and hated. In the end, it came down to us. We had to ask ourselves what we felt Sonic was missing up until now and what we would want in a Sonic game. Fortunately, as Sonic fans we are extremely excited about the game you guys will be seeing soon and as the PD team, extremely proud of the game we made.

In the next few weeks, we'll be drafting up some dev diaries for you check out to get a better ides of the Werehog and all his skills and what inspired us on that front. We'll talk more about the background of the team itself and their role in the creation of the game. Lastly, we'll give you a taste of some of the new moves Sonic has been given in this game and some of the control specifics we implemented for the Wii version to ensure that Wii fans were really taking advantage of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

I hope, by the time I'm done writing this -- you guys will be a happy with the game as we are proud. But in the meantime, start training your thumbs for some serious speeding action! Stay tuned for more developer updates and introductions to the team in Japan who worked so hard to bring you this game. In the upcoming weeks we will tell you more about the new features -- including the Hedgehog Engine created by the Sonic team -- as well as the stunning environments, Sonic's new moves and of course, the Werehog himself. Keep reading!

Thanks
Patrick

Hmm. Pretty much the same as we've heard before now. Nothing really new that I can see.

It's interesting that someone from Sega has a blog on IGN though.

I guess Sega really wants to connect with the fans in any way possible.

While browsing around for anything new on Unleashed, I did find on IGN a new trailer for the Wii version of the game.

http://wii.ign.com/dor/objects/14242720/so...aileroct15.html

I'm not gonna get the game for the Wii myself, not because I'm afraid the controls won't be simple. But I'm kind of more fond of the better graphics of the 360/PS3 port.

Ugh. For the millionth time, I've gotta ask. Why make the Werehog's arms so freakin' stretchy?! He'd look so badass if not because of that! Look at him! Those arms make him look ridiculous when he's stretched out like that!

Seriously! He puts Mr. Fantastic to shame! No! He puts Plastic Man to shame!

I'll probably rent the X-Box 360 version once I get said system. Wii ports aren't known for having great controls. Most of the time it's because they're shoehorned in.

Never really found the controls for Order of the Phoenix to be too much of a problem, in fact, I found it playable. But then again, I haven't played any of the other versions, so... can't say.

And I don't need to play the Wii Spider-Man 3 game to know that that port did so bad. I mean, baaaaad.

As do I. Sonic the Werehog levels should be fun. He kicks a lot of ass, and he'd look so badass, if not for his ridiculously stretchy arms, which make him look silly.

EDIT: 1,400th post! Woo!

I'm still on the fence a bit, but it's not becauseof the regular Sonic levels. Those actually looks like a good time and more along the lines of what we used to expect of Sonic. Also, I like that music.

What's got me iffy is the Werehog sections. I'm still not sold on that mechanic and I can't say it looks like a lot of fun. Of course, it could still be; so I'm waiting for the reviews.

But at the very least, I'm definitely renting the game. The Werehog sections are keeping me from actually wanting to purchase it though.

The Sonic Unleashed hype has been getting up to speed lately. Today, it breaks the sound barrier. The US and UK Sonic Unleashed website has undergone a MASSIVE overhaul. And it is pretty. Very, very pretty.

http://www.sega.com/sonicunleashed/us/

While the US site has the game's main theme song, "Endless Possibilities" by Bowling for Soup, the UK site has some epic sounding event music that's never been heard before.

Here's the rundown on some of the levels:

Greece becomes Apotos.

"High Europe" becomes Spagonia, a take on Italy.

China becomes Chun-Nan.

The recently revealed Middle Eastern level is called Shamar.

Also on the map is Abadat, a level we've never seen.

Mazuri, which could be the Africa level.

Empire City, which, judging by the flag, is definitely an American-themed level.

And Holoska is the ice level.

Far as I've heard, Empire City is supposed to be New York City. Has that changed? Or are these just the level names for the UK release?
