Well, since Sammy's been out of the picture, things have doing alright with Sega, so there's hope yet.

That's one thing that baffles me. Part of me thinks that it might have to do with the fact that Sonic Team wants to make this game more cartoony, instead of giving it a realistic visual design like the one seen in Next-Gen. I'm all for having cartoony visual designs for this game, but c'mon. That's just ridiculous. Man, Sonic puts Mr. Fantastic to shame!

EDIT: There's a new gameplay video of one of the daytime levels, and it actually looks more encouraging then the E3 stage demo done for GameSpot.

http://www.sonicstadium.org/news/meet-chip

I like how Sonic's looking at the score at the end of the level, and upon receiving an S rank, he does a break dance. It goes to show that even Sonic has some small knowledge of his existence as a video game character.

I see. Well personaly, I like it when they try to go more realisitic with it! It's HOT that way XD LOL
But in all seriousness (because Sonic IS serious business), I don't mind that they want to go toward a more cartoony look. However...stretchy arms doesn't equal cartoony. It equals disturbing. LOL I am egar to play this game though, regardless of any...unusual developments.

Aww...that video doesn't want to play for me :( I even installed the upgrade flash thingy it recomended.

Yeah, I myself found the realistic design in Next-Gen really cool myself. Thing is, a lot of Sonic fans who like Sonic's classic games on the Genesis more don't really like Sonic looking realistic. One friend of mine told me that he thought Eggman's Next-Gen design was kickass, as well as the realistic look for his robots and mechs, but other then that, he didn't really like the overall game's visual design. He preferred the more surreal sort of look that the Sonic series has always had.

Cartoon characters' ability to stretch their limbs to ridiculous limits has been around for such a long, long, looooooong time. So I wouldn't say it's disturbing. It DOES equal cartoony. But as surreal as Sonic's world is, at least the laws of physics are still applied. Giving any of the Sonic characters (at least in the video game universe) the ability to ridiculously stretch their arms like they ate the Gum Gum Fruit is a no-no. Especially Sonic.

Hell, I even irked when Shadow was able to stretch himself somewhat in Shadow the Hedgehog, like he was made of f###ing elastic!!

Yeah, that happens to me sometimes too.

EDIT: Attention, people in the UK!

Here's a good deal for the PS2 copy of Sonic Unleashed!

You lucky gits. =P

Huh... all I could think when I saw Robotnik's Next-Gen design is that he looked incredibly lame. I mean, really. I honestly thought that was his worst design ever. I'm partial to the classic iteration and/or the Adventure era design.

I hate it when they try to go realistic, because really, that's not what Sonic is about. Sonic is commiting an absolute no-no for the franchise right now with it's overly realistic BS. Sonic can't exist in the real world. His realm being confined to the real world does not benefit the fantastic nature of the whole thing. In fact, it hinders it.

It's like trying to set Mario in the real world. It doesn't work. There's a golden rule with things like this; you don't fix what isn't broken. There's realistic and then there's going too far; and Next-Gen crossed the line early.

Sega and Sonic Team needs to stop that ****, because they're slowly draining Sonic's world of it's unique identity. One game at a time.

Thank goodness for Unleashed's visual designs then. The level designs are "realistic", yet there are so many loops and zig zags, rails suspended in air, Eggman's back to his post-Adventure look, the humans look like Pixar characters...

In recent news, the official website for the Tokyo Game Show of 2008 has revealed a list of exhibitors for the show. Sega's in there, so it's a safe bet that they'll be showcasing Unleashed and/or Chronicles.

Unleashed is a given for being there, but Chronicles, I'm not so sure about. If release dates hold, it will have released by then. Which leaves no real reason to preview it at a game show, considering it would have been released a week and a half earlier.

Sounds good to me. I still wish they would quit trying to shove "Sonic in real world locations" down my throat though.

Well don't forget, there still isn't an announced release date for the people in Japan. Likely it could also be released there in September, but you never know.

Travis Moses of GamePro has written a short preview article for the game.

Quote:

What you need to know about Sonic Unleashed is that while the last few games in the series fell seriously short of expectations, Sega is wiping the slate clean by focusing on what Sonic fans love most -- speed -- and introducing for the first time, a full-featured combat system for Sonic's darker half.

At night, Sonic the Hedgehog transforms into Sonic the Werehog, a beast form with super strength and stretchy arms. But how did this happen? It's explained in full detail at the beginning of the game, but the jest is that Sonic got zapped with an overdose of the Chaos Emeralds. This transformation allows for some interesting gameplay never experienced before in a Sonic game.

In beast form, always at night, Sonic can't run but he can brawl. Using his super stretchy arms similarly to Kratos's Blades of Athena, Sonic can destroy enemies with devastating combos, grabs, and throws. In addition, Sonic's new stretch abilities allow him to reach high ledges and even catch himself from especially high falls. It's Sonic on steroids and quite the quirky concept, but when you see the midnight beast in action it actually looks like fun to play.

Each level in Sonic Unleashed features a day and nighttime version based on real-world locales, including Greece and China's Great Wall. During the day, Sonic is his normal self, agile and fast as hell. In fact, Sonic has never run this fast before, topping out at 300 mph in-game, relative to the real-world. He's so fast he can even run on water. Surprisingly, Sonic Unleashed looks like it could bring the Sonic series back from the dead, and just in the nick of time.

Gamesradar are reviewing the games that were shown at the Leipzig Games Convention. They gave Sonic Unleashed a 6/10, and had this to say about it.

Gamesradar

Sonic Unleashed plays like a highly polished retrospective, remixing elements of Sonic Adventure, Sonic and the Secret Rings and the original 2D games. The only problem with that? Only one of those elements was any good in the first place. So while the 3D, into-the-screen sections control fairly responsively and with much more flexibility than the blue ballistic's Wii debut ever offered, they still fall victim to the "Am I actually playing this?" syndrome inherent to the 3D Sonic games.

Automatic speed boosts, springs set up in unavoidable positions, grind-rail after grind-rail... Yet again we just set Sonic running and left him to it. And worst of all? The 2D sections we've been so excited about worked the exact same way in this particular demo. And don't even get us started on the werehog combat sections. We didn't get to play them, but they looked painfully sluggish and made up of some of the most generic platforming we've seen in ages.

TSSZ News

Spanish gaming website Revogamer.net was at this year’s Games Convention in Germany and had a chat with Sega regarding the Nintendo Wii version of Sonic Unleashed.  Most of the new details regarding the Wii version are related to how we’ll be controlling Sonic using both the Wiimote and Nunchuck. Movement of the Wiimote will accelerate Sonic whereas the Nunchuck will be used to move Sonic. Quicksteps will be done using the “Z” and “B” buttons. Also noted in the article is the lack of motion controls for attacking while in the air. It seems while observing some of the gameplay of Sonic Unleashed (Xbox 360 version) at the Games Convention, RevoGamer noticed  some problems controlling Sonic at low speeds, such as walking for rings.

One of the biggest questions we’ve had regarding the Nintendo Wii version of Sonic Unleashed has been about how similar the design and gameplay will be to the Xbox 360/PS3 versions. RevoGamer mentions that the design and gameplay will be closer then first thought, even if it’ll be developed by two different teams. It seems we get different answers related to this question every time, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

According to Sega, the Nintendo Wii version will be shown at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show in October. A game that will likely not appear at TGS this year will be Nintendo Wii’s Sonic and the Black Knight, it appears Sega wants to focus on Sonic Unleashed first.

Special thanks to Chaotic Blu from the SSMB for the heads up and some translation help.

Not surprised Sonic and the Black Knight isn't going to be there. Aside from hype focus, they only announced the game two months ago. They better have a damn good version to show for it too though, otherwise they're going to have way too many people dismiss it as another failure in next gen Sonic.

People have a low tolerance for the series crap these days.

Pretty much. That's the sad part, really. Most everyone agree's that Heroes had some good ideas, but was just executed very, very poorly.

Reviews for Heroes were generally mixed. There were some people who liked it, and some people who didn't. Me? Well, I think it's decent. I was expecting it to be better.

I think it's fun to play, but GODDAMN if it isn't unfair a lot of the time. :meh: Sonic Team really should've taken the time to fix the controls. That's pretty much the only thing I can find wrong with this game, unless there's something I'm missing.
