I revive this thread for a news story that Sega of Europe has put up on their website today, regarding Sonic Unleashed.

http://www.sega-europe.com/en/NewsStory/1835.htm

Quote:

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (April 3, 2008) - SEGA® of America and SEGA of Europe Ltd., today announced that everyone's favourite hedgehog will be breaking new ground yet maintaining his roots, in the upcoming title, Sonic Unleashed{TM}.  Developed by renowned studio Sonic Team, the latest installment in the multi-million selling franchise, will take players on an unforgettable high-speed journey around the globe in a way never before experienced in the world of Sonic.  The game is set for release later this year and will be available for the Xbox 360{TM} videogame and entertainment system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, Wii{TM} home video game system from Nintendo and PLAYSTATION®2.

Sonic Unleashed is built on a powerful new "Hedgehog Engine", which introduces seamless 3D to classic 2D camera transitions, whilst delivering a rich and expansive world with multiple paths to choose from.  Under development for three years, the Hedgehog Engine produces a visually rich next generation look and feel with elements of classic Sonic gameplay mechanics.  The Hedgehog engine will help re-define the gameplay experience for Sonic fans and newcomers to the franchise alike.

"By combining rich and vibrant scenery with dynamic viewpoints Sonic Unleashed will provide an immersive 3D experience whilst keeping alive the 2D gameplay elements and fantastic worlds that Sonic fans know and love" commented Gary Knight, European Marketing Director for SEGA Europe.  "In addition to this classic Sonic gaming experience, when darkness sets in Sonic Unleashed players will be able to experience a completely new way to play as Sonic... making this his most exciting adventure yet!"

Having been broken apart by the evil Dr Eggman, it's down to Sonic to put the pieces of the world back together again by retrieving the power of the chaos emeralds.  In doing so, Sonic will find himself in a race against time and faced with an unusual situation that will challenge him in ways never before seen.  By completing a wide variety of action-packed stages, spanning the seven broken continents of the world, gamers will need to unleash Sonic's amazing abilities to save the world, and himself!

The opportunity to engage in Sonic in different ways during the day and night time levels brings a completely original way of playing to the Sonic franchise, in addition to running at high speeds in classic Sonic style, combat fighting will become possible.  Super quick Sonic's speed skills will be highlighted by four new modes, whilst the all new combat, movement and functional abilities will offer depth and variety to the game.  As the sun sets in Sonic Unleashed, a different type of adventure will awaken in Sonic's newest quest...

Sonic Unleashed is scheduled for release worldwide in late 2008.  For screenshots and art, please visit the SEGA press site at www.sega-press.com.

I saw "new engine" and immediatly decided I might give this a shot. It sounds like they're finally getting their heads out of their asses and going to redo the engine.

Good for them. I approve.

Hopefully we'll see some spiffy shots of it in action and stuff that might even get me atually excited. I really hate being skeptical of this series, because even as hard on it as I am, I do love the adventures of the speedy blue hedgehog.

Okay, I've watched the video and looked at the screenshots. This definitely looks like a step in the right direction. If they can pull off a good game with this, it might restore some faith in them for me.

I really, really hope they put effort into making branching paths for this one. That's something from the Sonic games I've really missed. The press release said they would have them, but I guess I'm just saying I really hope they put effort into it.

The concept is still rather lame, but I have a little bit of hope now. Thanks for the link Soni.

I'd really like to be able to enjoy a good Sonic game again.

I'll agree that even though I happen to like his current games, there are people who dislike the way he's going. This looks like another step for Sonic's healing process (the others being Secret Rings, his appearance in Brawl, and the upcoming RPG).

Everyone has different taste, but even you are willing to admit that there are some serious flaws lately. This sounds to me like a step in the right direction. Something I'm all for.

I just wonder how they're gonna explain Sonic's lycanthropy. It's not really clear how he gets this curse.

More importantly, how are they gonna make it work in the gameplay. As the both of us have pointed out, the werewolf transformation needs to have its advantages and disadvantages for Sonic. Also, I'm glad it's been confirmed that this transformation only occurs during the night, Sonic should not be able to turn into this... werehedgehog. Whatever.

We're probably not going to know for a while.

Keep in mind, while placated a bit, I am still concerned about that aspect of the game. It sounds like they're finally going to fix some of the problems, only to have such a worrysome concept as werewolfism.

There definitely needs to be some sort of drawback to the transformation, something that makes it so it isn't beneficial, or I'm going to call shenanigans.

His speed should be lessened, methinks. Less agility, too. All of that traded in for some very vicious attack power.

Also, I'm waiting for some more music from this game. While it'd be good if Crush 40 once again had some participation in this guy, I think it'd be even more great if they didn't have anything to do with this game. At all.

While their songs for the Sonic games are real good fun to listen to, a guy can only stand so much Crush 40. This is why I liked the theme songs in the Sonic Riders, Sonic Rush, and Sonic Rivals games a lot better. Because they didn't rely on Crush 40 for good music.

The music for the 3D games has been rather good, but I don't think I've realized until recently just how much I miss the old flavor Sonic games had in music.

Much as I love rock music, trying to fit too much of it for Sonic is detrimental.

It's kind of like with Smash Brothers Brawl. For the most part, I don't even listen to any of the newer tracks from 2000 onwards, like the Adventure games theme songs. I'm pretty much using the old themes from past games and the wonderful modernized arrangement of Angel Island Zone.

It really made me realize something was lost there. I wish they'd use more of the quirkier music and less Crush 40 or whatever else they use. More stuff like the beautiful Angel Island arrangement would make me very happy.

There was a list posted by a general gamer, listing things on what to do (or at least in his opinion) to save the Sonic series.

One of the things listed was this:

"If you're going to be cool, be ironic, or you fail."

He then goes on to say that the whole finger-wagging thing, as well as Sonic's cool attitude wore out after the 90's had come and gone, and that if Sonic wants to keep his personality, he should go the way of Dante in the Devil May Cry series, with the whole self-insulting bit.

Um... I'm sorry, could you repeat that, guy?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Sonic's personality. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

That's why you don't listen to general gamers. They're usually putzes who don't know what's good for a franchise or even best for them.

What you need are guys like you and me. People intimitely involved in the franchises enough to recognize what are flaws and aren't.

Sonic may have problems, but personality it isn't. Just because something might make it a bit more appealing to the **** eating masses does not make it better in general; because then it's a fad. And what freaking fad ever lasts or is well remembered?

Few I know of.

Honestly, even if Sega did listen to this guy, it wouldn't be met very well by Sonic fans. It just... wouldn't last very long.

Okay, I'm gonna move on for a bit. For now, the story seems pretty simple. Though, if they do make the story more complex... well, it should at least make sense. :meh2:

So, Eggman has broken up the world into seven parts, and Sonic needs to collect the Chaos Emeralds to bring it all back together.

...Wait. Seven pieces of the world broken up?

Didn't Eggman already try that in Sonic Advance 3?
