Uh. Spiderman. Mediocre. Spiderman 2, acceptable game. Spidey's third return. Suckit.

I will probably buy the 360 version of Sonic Unleashed, but I am still debating about getting the Black Knight. Also, when my 360 arrives, I'm planning on purchasing 06 just so I can understand the full Silver thing.

Purchasing 06? Yeah, if you're not a die hard fan like me, then buying it is probably not wise. You're better off renting the game first before coming to a decision.

September 2008 issue of GamePro has printed a fall preview guide of all the games coming out later this year and early 2009. One of the games they talked about was Sonic Unleashed. Just thought y'all should know.

GamePro

Finally! A 3D, high-def envisioning of Sonic the Hedgehog that captures it all -- the ridiculous speed, the bouncing puzzles, the breakneck twists and turns, and loops that bring us back to our Genesis days. Sonic Unleashed will fluidly tie together both classic 2D levels and short, full-3D speed stints in a drop-dead gorgeous 3D world. By day, he'll collect golden rings, blast through enemies, and traverse a shattered Earth on his quest to find the ever-elusive Chaos Emeralds. But when night falls, Sonic's inner werewolf comes out to play.

GameSpot have posted three gameplay videos for the game.

Possibly and very likely recorded from the E3 stage demo.

Apparently, for the night stages, the music changes into an action sort of theme when Sonic comes across hordes of enemies, and it goes back to being peaceful upon defeating them all.

There's an article in Portuguese gaming magazine, PSM3. Nothing new was really mentioned, except an official statement saying Sonic will run along the hands of Big Ben in London in one of the stages.

What's that?

You wanna look at the other pretty pictures?

Go here.

Regardless. This game is looking less like a flunk everytime I see it. I remember first hearing about this game, going 'DAAAMN. NO THANK YOU.'

When the images and every other information about Unleashed was first leaked onto the net, I didn't really know what to think. New Sonic game good I guess, but I barely knew anything about it at the time.

Well again, I have no doubt that the gameplay in Black Knight will be good. I think it'll play well. I just don't like the idea of Sonic having a sword.

The way I see it, the controls will probably be crap. But that's just what I think. We'll have to see some gameplay videos. Hopefully by the time Unleashed is unleashed, we'll see some more Black Knight. Or, if the Wii Unleashed had a trailer or in game demo? Even Better!

But I'm getting my hopes up.

Just a quick glance at some of Sonic Unleashed's screenshots and it's easy to get excited. Not just because of its stunningly sunny looks, but because they hint at what Sonic fans have always wanted -- a return to its 2D, side-on roots. Like Sonic Rush maybe -- but with better visuals than the DS is capable of. Try not to get too carried away though -- this isn't the 2D-but-with-3D looks that many of us have craved... it's going to be much, much more than that.

"Our goal," explains Yoshihisa Hashimoto, director of Sonic Unleashed at Sonic Team, "is not to go back to the roots, but to go beyond that." Fair enough -- but the question remains, which series of Sonic games will Unleashed be closest to? The classic 16-bit Sonic games on the Mega Drive, or the Dreamcast's move into 3D with Sonic Adventure? According to Hashimoto, "In terms of design, although we drew on past titles, we did not confine ourselves to them. We've designed the game from scratch -- taking in what was good from past games. You can think of this as a comprehensive work of all Sonic games and yet something that's going a step beyond that."

True enough from what we've seen of the game -- there are many elements already evident from past Sonic titles. And it feels like an amalgamation of side-scrolling sections and the 3D bits of Sonic that actually worked, like the best bits from, say, Sonic and the Secret Rings -- with the camera swinging between the two styles every 30-40 seconds or so of gameplay.

That's not all either, Unleashed will also see the return of a between-level hub. "Initially we set out to make a Sonic Adventure 3," says Hashimoto, "but we changed direction early on -- although you'll still get a taste of the 'Adventure' series." At the moment, the split in gameplay is two-thirds classic run-and-jump action sequences, with the final third centering around Adventure-style story-driven sections.

Which seems fine by us -- although we'll freely admit to preferring Sonic's early games -- as well as the more recent Rush installments -- there are certain bits of Sonic Adventure (like the stronger character and story elements) that we'd hate to see left by the wayside too though. That said, there are plenty of elements that have come from recent Sonic games that we most definitely don't want to see making a comeback -- like Sonic's increasing insistence on having his world more "realistic". Is this a trend that's going to continue in Unleashed?

"No, I don't think Sonic should be something that's merely realistic," explains Hashimoto. "That wouldn't be Sonic. Our goal is to make it like Disney World. Disney World is 'real', but it's a colourful toon-ish world. Just strolling around it makes you excited. I want to make Sonic's world like this... with the textures as realistic as possible yet forms that are deformed."

Maybe not what everyone wants to hear we're sure -- but if any of you are still scrubbing your mouths out from those nasty Shadow the Hedgehog flavours, then Sonic Unleashed could well be the quenching mouthwash you're after. Sure, there are still those realistic elements to it, but at the same time, it still has that stylised, fantastical feel about it too, and more importantly, those glorious sunny skies we know and love are most definitely back.

See, this time Sonic is drawing from numerous real world locations (the original name for the game was actually "Sonic World Adventure"). Mediterranean villages, deserts, jungles, European and American-style cities, even the Great Wall of China all feature -- and help give back Sonic that "holiday feel" that's been sorely missing for so long.

Is Hashimoto aware of what fans have been crying out for for so long? "We always listen to fans' feedback and reviews -- but they don't necessarily have a direct influence on our games. Unleashed is created under its own philosophy. I believe that it will go in the direction which fans want. Regardless of how we did in the past, I think a game maker should always do his or her best to create the best game under any circumstance. Sonic has great potential and I wish to make the best of it."

Thank heavens for that -- and on the strength of what we've seen, Sonic Team could well deliver...

My thoughts exactly, kyuubi. Though to be honest, was there really a need for you to post images of the game?

Anyway... since you really wanna get this game, I trust you're a big Sonic fan.
