DBZ Live-action movie; Oh, great

So we’ve heard rumors about a “live action DBZ movie”.

Well, for those who don't know. Here's how it went. A while back, it WAS a rumor, until in 2002 FUNimation confirmed that FOX had acquired the rights to make a live action Dragonball/Z motion picture. After that, the web-community pretty much went berserk. All of the sudden, online forums started pooping up, enlightening fellow Z-Freaks with possible “rumors” (i.e. lies) about what the movie really was to be about.

Some fan sites started popping up, though very few of them had “actual” or “true” information. Official news—though a rarity—came here and there; mostly from IMDb.com and the Official Dbz Site itself.

From then on, possible directors/actors/writers/producers/etc. were thrown in and out of the picture…until in early 2004 production came to a complete halt, and plans were almost canceled. But now it's back. Confirmed? Well, the news is still "fan-based guesses".

If it is confirmed, then it's a movie I'm more then willing to pass. As much as I love DBZ in my younger years, even back then I can never see it becoming a live-action movie.

Anime rarely translates well to live action. The wild hair, the blasts of energy and the unbelievable battles wouldn't work in live action, I think.

Honestly, like with an "Avatar: The Last Airbender" movie, I think it'll lose it's charm in the transition to live action.

Don't know what to think of this really. Other then I hope it doesn't happen. It's got "disaster" written all over it...

This is coming from someone who still loves DBZ.

To butcher a perfectly good Blackadder quote, "There are amoeba on Saturn who can create a better anime than Dragonball Z." Animation that fluctuated from pretty good to oh-god-my-eyes, writing that is barely disguised fanfic, terrible plots, retarded characters... this is coming from someone who really LOATHES the Dragonball series, but it is an abomination.

Who here has heard the lightbulb joke related to the matter? "How many Saiyans can screw in a lightbulb?" "Oh, it doesn't matter, really. What DOES matter is how many episodes they can do it in."

Seriously. The only thing I like about it is the design of the characters' Super Saiyan forms, and the reason the Super Saiyans exist is why the Sonic franchise exists. To see if they could do better in terms of Super transformations. They did.

So it's safe to say that if there's ever a live-action movie of this horrible, HORRIBLE series, I will kill the director.

Soni, cut the bashing, please. DBZ was not all bad, though it did have it's lower points. The early stuff was great though.

And the episode stretching isn't something just DBZ did. Naruto is just as guilty, as are others. I've always found it unfair everyone associates DBZ with it.

Also, they didn't do the Super form better. Until I see energy beams, they didn't do it better. They just ripped em off. =P

The movie is still a bad idea though.

Given that Shadow can fire off more powerful Chaos Spears in his Super form, as well as a sighting of Super Sonic shooting a transparent beam at some Metarex during the third season of Sonic X... oh, but what am I talking about, they're ripoffs. :P

JerkyChid, please try to avoid one word posting ok?

Anyways, DBZ live action? I don't really care anymore if they do or do not make it, I will eventually watch even if it does turn out to be terrible cuz I'm a fan. If they don't, meh whatever then.

I've heard that a Dragon Ball Movie has been confirmed and shall be released next summer. It'll be directed by James Wong and Stephen Chow will be the producer.

Justin Chatwin has been casted to play Goku...meh, ok I guess.

sorry Gurl, it was either that or lots of dots .............mm-hmm........

It could just go anywhere. Though I would eventually see it no matter how crappy it'd turn out to be.

Oh dear. As a DBZ fan, I cannot say I am happy about this. Some things just do not translate well, and DBZ is one of them, just like DL pointed out. I'm afraid this will not turn out well, at all, and will just give people further reason to mock one of my favorite animes.

I'm still holding out for this movie being a success. I mean, the Death Note live-action movies were forged from epic win.

I've seen this info before, I'm not sure if this is qualified info. If it is coming out next summer, we would've seen a trailer (or any type of hint) towards it's release by now.

Out of the all the leaking info out there, the most frequent rumors I hear are these:

Director – Roland Emmerich, the director of Independence Day, Godzilla, and Day After Tomorrow.

Screenwriter – Tedi Sarafian, screenwriter of Terminator 3.

DBZ creator Akira Toriyama was hired as the film’s consultant but wanted too much control over it so FOX made him sign a new contract, which basically gave him the boot.

Cast:
-RAY PARK: “Vegeta”
-CHRIS JUDGE: “Goku”
-JASON BATEMAN: “Raditz”
-ORLANDO BLOOM: “Tien”, yea, right.
- BILL GOLDBERG: “Nappa”
-JESSICA ALBA: “Bulma”
-ELIZA DUSHKU: “Chi-Chi”

Personally, this sounds like good casting, but I'm not dubbing this info official just yet.

Oie. I still love DBZ and Dragon Ball. But as Crazy and Dl said, I don't expect this to work out well as a live-action film. Though we CAN pray that it does work. If they DO make a movie, the best we can do is hope it won't be a major stinker.
