Ever wonder why there were so many superhero shows (Teen Titans, Justice League Unlimited, etc.) cancelled? dl316bh has written up an article on the matter which may answer some of your questions. Check out the article here and don't forget to share your thoughts on the article on this thread. |

The almighty dollar is an evil source in our society isn't it? Especially if awesome shows like the ones you mentioned can be offed so quickly. It all comes down to merchandising and of course how much money you make at the end of the day. Its sad to know that TT and JLU are gone, but in truth I think they'll come back some day, not in their original forms of course. Its like the 1960's spiderman cartoon, Marvel's first real cartoon for the TV sets at home. Now there have been several reiterations of the classic character in different shows further boosting his popularity. Eventually he became so well known that he got his own movie from Marvel. I think the same thing could happen to TT. ?Over the years new shows after shows of the Titans will show up, each with a different take on them. The Titans will only get more popular as time goes on. I hope that one day soon (Possibly when we get the Judas Contract on video) we'll be able to start seeing more and more of the Titans in new formats. And eventually one day... This Summer On the silver screen When There's trouble you'll know who to call. Robin's Voice: Titans! Together! What? A lizard can dream can't it? Anyway DL good article, happy to see someone made a new one. I mean if we're going to be taken seriously we need to point out that we're not just a bunch of fan freaks on some board. We're very well thoughtout and sound minded people with ideas and opinions. So good work DL. |

Dl is like our own, slightly less angry, enormously less sarcastic version of Louis Black. Sarcasm aside, he's done himself a remarkable job on this particular article. Still, I'm barely holding back my natural instinct to start arguing my case against Family Guy. Two weeks in a row, I've watched Family Guy and I barely laughed at anything I saw. It's become worse than The Simpsons as far as not being funny anymore. As always, the hardcore fans will stand by it, and the idiot frat boys who drink themselves to death will gurgle through their mouthfuls of cool, refreshing Coors Lite that the show is the funniest thing on TV, but the way I see it, it has degenerated into a half hour of fart jokes and--I'm sorry, I guess I'm not so good at holding back as I thought. Heh. Sorry guys. I always figured that TT was cancelled due to low merchandise sales, but I never thought that liscencing'd have something to do with it. But it makes sense--Ben 10 gets a touch of the TT writing staff, plus it's owned entirely by Cartoon Network, so we all know where the money's flowing. It's depressing--people are willing to cancel popular, entertaining shows for the sake of the dollar. Reminds me of an episode of South Park. But I should probably stop before I launch into another tirade. I've said my piece. Let the commenting begin. |

Well al, I'm glad you liked the article, but was the Family guy rant really necessary? In general, I like the show even now and at least they didn't take a pot shot directly in the show at South Park. Surrrrre. South Park has NEVER gone off and done a joke completely irrelevant to a story *points to al's sig*. I'll refrain from dying from laughter. It boils down to which show you prefer al. But please, be on topic. If you want to rant about Family Guy, do so in it's threads, that way the people who don't want to see it can merely not go to that thread. I shouldn't even respond because this shouldn;t be discussed here. I'm a bad mod. >_< I know I rant alot on Teen Titans, but that's me setting a bad example. Please be a better example then me. Sometimes I wonder WHY I was even made a mod. I may be being a bit hypocritical right now, but don't do things the way I do. I'm trying to tone it down. Now, carry on. On licensing, it can play a major role. Like I said in the article, it can have almost too much to do with it. With X-Men and Spiderman, they were cancelled because Fox didn't like their two most popular shows owned by Marvel. They canned them. It can't happen now though, because Marvel is financing a lot of it's movies and animated series. Means only they can shut down their series. DC doesn't do this, so they don't have the luxury. Hopefully they get their act together and finance their own series like Marvel. They're only financing the movies right now. Maybe soon. By the way, who the hell is Louis Black? O_o |

The sig is from an episode of South Park where Family Guy is going to air an episode with the Prophet Muhammad, and Cartman is trying to get the show off the air because, well, the reasoning is in the sig. Great episode, really. Bart Simpson made a cameo. So, you see, the joke WAS relevent to the plot. Louis Black is a comedian whose trademark is loud, angry sarcasm. Funny man. And as far as superhero shows go, I think for DC the high water mark was TT and JLU. I don't have much faith in the League of Superheros, and I won't be shocked if it gets the axe. |

I meant in general al. South Park cannot ever claim they haven't done any jokes irrelevant to the plot. Hell, half the time, they used to never even HAVE much of a plot. The only time I agreed with the creators on much of anything is when they ripped Hayes a new one for him "drawing the line" and being a hypocrite. Now I think they are just as hypocritical. And this is coming from you too, someone who has before defended the Simpsons, which is the TRUE face of a degenerating show. Teen Titans was nowhere near the high water mark for pretty much anybody. The high water mark for DC for just about everybody is Batman: TAS. Congratulations on being the only person I've ever heard call it the high water mark. I've never heard of Louis Black, but even back when I HAD cable, I never watched comedians. Just George Carlin. so it's not surprising I don't know him. I never liked many comedians at all. Now that's enough of this discussion. No more. That is not what this thread is for and I want the discussion to end here. |

Don't be angry DL, anyway, I've read your article and it was quite informative, at the begining I thought the reasons of the cancellation of the show was only the unpopularity of it, something I doubted when I went to the mall with my now ex-girlfriend, and I saw tons and tons of merchandise about the TT. Being sincere I never thought that the license has something to do with the end of the show. The money is necesary for the show of course, but when it becomes and end and no a mean to reach a goal, well there is something wrong, unfortunately we can't do anything about it. Good article, a lot of information, I like your point of view. |

That was an awesome article. Some one could have been creative and made TT shirts. A TT shirt: 'You're just jealous cause I sound like a rock star' That would have been awesome. |

Ok, im new here. I read the article as well . It was a great article, but I alraedy knew that money was the most common reason for a show being axed. However, I feel you left out an important part of why merchandise doesn't get sold. The Internet! I myself am guilty of using the internet to download TT episodes, so don't think this is a rant directed to anyone. But a lot of shows, superheroes shows especially, aren't selling the DVD releases like they need to because people are downloading whole seasons from the internet.

Nice to see a new face. Welcome to TBRS. Read the rules, follow them like they were a religion and the two of us will get along just fine. ^_~ I left out the internet for a specific purpose. It may seem like it should be there, but in actuality it has no place. The reason? Most superhero shows aren't out on DVD yet or scheduled for the near future. This is especially true with Marvel productions. For some odd reason it almost seems like they are dragging their feet about releasing the 90's Marvel cartoon series on DVD. The most we have are a couple single disc episode compilations which leave out several awesome epsidoes. X-Men Evolution is being brought to DVD in season sets now, but where are the 90's series? Where's our season sets of Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man and X-Men? DC hasn't been a whole lot better until recently. They never really did much in the way of releasing their shows to DVD season sets/volumes. Then Batman: The Animated Series was a hit like only it could be on DVD, and they started rolling out season sets. Teen Titans is no real exception. The first season set was released far too late to save the show and all the episodes were up for download by then anyways. In general, DVD sales don't suffer because of the internet, for the reasons stated above, but also because there's another factor to take into consideration. The internet may have the episodes, but it's a well known fact that they are generally not the greatest quality and when they are put for free happen to be highly illegal. You can only get the best clarity from an official DVD and also avoid unnecessary law entanglements. For another thing, many people want to have it in tangible form anyways. Not only is there the clarity, but you only get the special features on DVD. There are many reasons why people still go for the DVD's, and sales rarely suffer because of the internet. Many fans don't use the internet much, don't even know they can be downloaded off the internet or just want it on DVD anyways. Trust me, I've already thought about the internet situation. |
