I had this topic in my debate tournament yesterday, so let's debate it here.

I just want to say a few things, though. If you are for the topic, say at the begining of your post that you're proposition. If you are against the topic and you are debating the opposite, please say you are opposition. I'll be able to tell whether or not you read this part by the beginning of your post. Thanks.

Alright, I am opposition.

Algebra is standard in society, just like reading. If you can't read, you can't get a job or function in society. If you can't do algebra, you can't pass graduate school, and you can't get a good, well paying job. If you can't get a good, well paying job, you are not well off. If you are not well off, that's bad.

Algebra doesn't just teach you math, it also teaches you how to think. It teaches orginization, and how to represent things. If you know algebra, it's just better for you, your performance, your brain, and your future.

Thoughts?

Algebra is one of the most important thing a kid needs to learn when he/she is in school. These are our basic fundamentals to know how to do geometry biology, other sciences, and everything else.

How are you going to college if you don't know what 5(2X+6)=100 is? How are you going to get a simple job if you don't know how to solve a super easy algebraic problem like 3X-4=20? I know that these problems are rediculously easy, but how are you going to do anything important in life if you don't know how to solve those two problems? How are you going to be a member of today's society if you don't know any algebra? How may I ask?

When are we gonna need to know the hypotinuse of a rectangle times nine squared? I'm sorry, but I must agree with Spazz.

I am in agreeance with you as well. How many times am I (an actor) going to need to know stuff that is entirely irrelevant to my chosen field?
I always hope for the best...experience unfortunately has taught me to expect otherwise

I hate doing algebra now but it's for the better. I agree with you Spazz dear. It does make us think. I asked my father which is a math freak since he's an engineer. He told me that he uses formulas and algebra all the time in his job. But it depends on what job you are going for. They should get rid of it. If high school students what to be invovled with science or math subject livings then they should keep it. Maybe they should have seperate courses for kids that are interested in learning it and for ones that are not. That's more along something that college students do but I think it would work out fine.

Algebra. Learned it today. It is quite handy to know. For me it is easy, but I'm a nerd. Power to the nerds! Even the smart girl can't get it. (AO, Alex J's joke) To me, it is just letters and numbers together.

For one, I love math, I was always good at it and like working with numbers and analyzing things-algebra helps you throughout life. Whatever job you'll have, it will have to have SOME form of algebra in it. I'm taking Algebra I right now, and to me, it's really not as hard as some people claim it is.

You need it for engenering. And it's the only other class I don't suck in. I say keep it.

What we need to get rid of (or at least make an elective) is Literature. Because alotta people, like me, don't wanna be forced to read books like "Great Gatsby" or "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Well in my school algebra is said to just be used by lazy mathmaticians. I think it might come in handy later on in life.

But I don't think so much of it, being more of an English person I don't pay much attention to maths. When I'm older I wanna be a writer so it doesn't make any difference to me.

But for the benefit of people who want jobs such as accountants and things like that then I say bring on the algebra.

- Edit -

I'm opposition. Sorry I forgot to post that >.>

Literature is important because simply, we learn through it. It speaks to us and affects us. That's why it's beautiful.

And hey, To Kill A Mockingbird a good book. I'm reading it now and I'm enjoying it.

Well it's hard to learn from something that puts you to sleep!

Anyway, I learn enough through the news and Metal CD's.

One of my teacher had this awesome chart called "When are we ever gonna have to use this stuff?"

It listed 50 of the most-chosen career paths and how math relates to each one. Every career, even garbageman, used some sort of algebra.

It's very necessary.

Proposition.

I suppose algebra is important in some jobs, but we should only be required to take it if we are interested in those particular career paths. Plus, if you're going to to follow one of those paths, you have to take algebra in college anyway, so it's sort of like spending a lot of time on learning things in high school that you don't need, when they should be teaching how to manage debt and pay taxes, how to buy houses...how to be an adult. That's what will help us when we get out of school, not algebra. I can't really think of a situation where a person in a non-mathematical-related field would use the Pythagorean Theorem or vectors.

But then again, I'm a writer, so math isn't all that important to me.

Well, of course. Think though, when you learned to read. Reading is necessary. If you couldn't read, you couldn't be a writer, or anything for that matter. By not learning algebra, you can really ax a lot of opportunities.

Algebra is the foundation of more complex math, science, and many other things. I want to be an actor or a singer so it doesn't concern me a lot, but I still think it's very important. Especially if you want to well in science.
